TURKISH COFFEE......CONJURES UP A SICKLY SWEET SYRUP IN MOST PEOPLES MINDS, AND TO BE FAIR IT CAN BE IN SOME OF THE COFFEE HOUSES OF THE MIDDLE EAST. HOWEVER I RECENTLY CAME ACROSS A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT VERSION OF THIS COFFEE DELICACY.
I had gone to lunch with some friends in Downtown Cairo and popped in to a cofffe bar for lunch. As soon as I entered, the aroma of the coffee beans rustic smell sailed across the room and permeated my senses. It was heady! I am not a huge coffee drinker, prefering juices or mint tea, but the smell of the beans was certainly overiding and created a warm feeling within.
Now Turkish coffee is an aquired taste as it is strong and tends to be quiet syrupy ( to me) and you usually get a grainy effect through the coffee.Turkish coffee is a method of preparing unfiltered coffee; Roasted and then finely ground coffee beans are simmered (not boiled) in a pot (cezve), optionally with sugar, and served in a small cup, where the grounds are allowed to settle. At present, it is found in Indonesia, Eastern Europe, North Africa, the Caucasus, the Balkans, and Middle East- (Wikipedia)
Today my friends introduced me to TURKISH DELIGHT ( not the chocolate) - a blend of ground coffee beans, added spices and coconut milk. Elsham, our waiter, explained in his best Arab-ish ( my word -cross between English and Arabic) that its "good energy, make you strong and no sleep" - mmm not so good, I like my sleep and I certainly don't want to be still buzzing at 4am !! However on deeper conversation with another English friend she explained that its an Energy Booster , if taken in the morning it takes you through the day with out the come down from normal coffee. While straight coffee can cause stomach irritability, jitters, adding a few spices to it can help it to replenish you, wake you up, and ward off any negative side effects. This recipe will be easy on your stomach, and will give you a healthy jolt of energy to keep you going all day!
SO HOW TO GET THE RECIPE - BY STEALTH?!
Actually no, Elsham told me what was in it and roughly through, Arab-ish, teaspoons, cups and coffeebeans and lots of 'charade' type actions - here is the recipe. THIS IS A COLD DRINK , BUT YOU CAN RE-WARM GENTLY ..

A nice shisha pipe with some apple flavoured tobacco afterwards too = DOUBLE YUMS!!
hahahaah thats funny because me and my daughter did just that Saturday - blog to come- coffee house overlooking the pyramids - travelled over from otherside of Cairo ( 1hr) but sooo worth it - she had mixed watermelon and apple and I had apple ....bliss
One can never die without smoking a shisha pipe and watching the world go by in Cairo - I await your post with glee!
Thank you for interesting story and useful manual. Have a nice day do
pleasure :)
Thank you for the delightful post and I must try the coffee.
pleasure - hope you like it :)
I've been interested in Turkish delight ever since a small boy, thanks to CS Lewis. When I finally ate some, I was a little disappointed (it was tasty, but I had high hopes...). The version I ate hate the dates like this does, but it was essentially a congealed cube of date jelly, with powdered sugar and nut crumbs as a coating.
It's interesting to see this version with coffee. I'll have to try it sometime.
Have you ever heard of Swedish coffee? I was watching an old Hitchcock movie-- Spellbound, when they referenced drinking coffee with egg in it. I looked it up and sure enough, it's a thing. Basically, you steep the coffee with the egg, then strain the whole thing. The egg is supposed to make it extra creamy and remove all hints of bitterness. Maybe you could try it and report your findings? (if you can get over the weird factor)
thankyou for your comment - mmm not sure of this one - sounds too far out for me.
coconut milk on coffee -
you're a genius @ladypenelope1
I'm too late for this but you've just given me a solution to adding something creamy to coffee at least coconut milk would not cause constipation like milk does when combined with sugar and coffee. Our tummy actually has a hard time processing that - it's like chewing shoe sole for the tummy.
And dates would work the same way coconut milk does having both fiber and sugar. I'm off taking coffee these days but in case I get the craving, I'll try this. I could imagine it tasting like that of a Sbcks caramel machiato with extra caramel shot - used to drink that
It does have a caramelly taste to it - the dates aids digestion - if you do it, let me know if it helps - thanks for commenting :)
will do !
