The riding experience is unique in and of itself. Gliding overtop of the water with the wind in your hair. With the jumping and spinning and carving turns, sometimes it even feels like a dance. There are times that I lose myself in the movement of it all. In a way the mind turns off and the primal body takes over my actions. It feels like some kind of great medicine. You could say its my favorite fix.
I have always wanted to have tunes playing while riding, but have managed to lose a lot of equipment in my trials with listening to music on the water. There have been a variety of different waterproof mp3 players and waterproof cases for my phone that have mostly worked. But, the biggest struggle was finding headphones that keep the water out and stay on when you crash.
With Snugs, I think I finally found one that will survive even the biggest wipe outs. They use 3D scanning and printing technology to take an impression of the ear canal and create a totally waterproof headphone specifically designed for your ear!
As safety officer I am morally obligated to mention some hazards of riding with tunes in your ears. First of all, I am not sure if it’s safe for you auditory health to have music blasting onto your eardrums, but that aside lets talk about how it can diminish your awareness on the water. Much of what you perceive around you is related to what you hear. When riding with earphones on be extra cautious of your surroundings. Before transitioning in the opposite direction always double check over your shoulder for the rider that is creeping in behind you. That means look over your shoulder while the kite remains in the direction of travel. Ensure that no collision is possible, then steer across the window to transition on the next tack.
When I ride with tunes, I am purposefully hyper-aware with my visual senses; constantly surveying the layout of all the riders positions around me. Also, be aware that you may not sense the gusts and lulls in the wind as well when riding with music. Look upwind to anticipate gusts. Be aware of the bigger picture with the weather systems moving on the horizon to notice if any storms may approach that could endanger your session. Overall, being lost in the music and movement of your body as you dance with the kite is intoxicating. So just remember to check in with reality periodically so that you don’t get hurt or end up the kook on the beach that was totally oblivious to something.
