Goji Goji!

in #rewilding5 years ago

I just saw @papa-pepper's post about goji and figured I'd throw up some pics of ours from this morning.

These little things are prolific!

Lookit all that! That's one little branch, and there's three of em! I've said it a hundred times how much these little things have surprised me this year. This was a tiny plant the size of a pencil lead in length and width. Now it's turned into a big sprawling bush thing.

Today's harvest.

I'm going to plant more of these. They seem to sucker easily, as there's already a couple coming off this small bush. They'll be propagated all over the place.

I've had dried goji before, and they're nice and sweet. The fresh berries taste like bell peppers. Makes sense, as they're a nightshade just like peppers.

Berries are something I need a lot more of. Berries, herbs, and some kind of vining somethings are what I'm going to focus on planting in the next year. Picking berries this morning showed me that if I want a good foraging space, I need berries. That's some primo forage.

Back to curating. Just wanted to drop a quick couple pics cause papa pepper inspired me. Have a good weekend!

It's amazing, isn't it, how something so tiny, can grow so huge!

Really it's an inspiring plant. So much fruit and growth from such a little thing!

One of our favourite plants...

One more thing:

In b4 @riverflows says "I didn't know you ate plants!"

Posted using Partiko Android

I am SURE you would put lettuce in a burger?

Posted using Partiko Android

Sauerkraut, yeah. It's the best burger topping. And tomatoes too. Lol

Nice! I need to try that one out. I have 3 goumi berry plants growing in my front food forest. I always seem to get goumi confused with goji. Goumi are nitrogen fixers and the berries look similar to goji. They taste good when fully ripe but not great if you get them at all early.

Oh? I need more nitrogen fixers. What's their growth habit look like?

Posted using Partiko Android

Cool, thanks! That looks like a good one. 6-10 feet tall. I assume they can be managed to stay shorter? That's about where I'm gonna keep my peaches, so it'd be cool to manage a nitrogen fixing shrub underneath a few of them.

I would assume so but I have not tried pruning mine.

Mine are less than a year old but they should grow as an upright shrub to around 8 feet I height. Check out this site for some more info: http://www.uncommonfruit.cias.wisc.edu/goumi-gumi

Nice! I started a whole bunch of gojis this spring, but only like 6 made it. The tallest is about 6 inches only. Hopefully next year they'll flourish.

Oh, I hope they do! They're an awesome plant!

Looking great!!!! Is yours a Chinese variety?

I have no idea at all. All I know is that I think it's invasive as all get out, which is good because FOOD! I wish peach trees were this invasive lol

@nateonsteemit, When we do the Plantation in my opinion the best experience is, we see the whole journey and growth process and we emotionally connects with the Earth Spirit. Stay blessed.

Posted using Partiko Android

I think you're very right.

Thank you.

Your plant looks lovely and healthy. Mmmm so yummy - I have a giant goji bush after five years and sharing the crop with the birds (naturally they get more than I do lol)

Sounds like you need more goji bushes! :) Moar! Moar!

I've thought about planting goji berries, but I never got around to it. Maybe I should get off my butt and do it! Can they be made into jam, I wonder?

Try it and find out! 😍

Posted using Partiko Android

Awesome!!! Not only that, but Goji are good for the eyes, the liver, and the blood!!!!

Just be wary about making a Goji wine....... 🥺
