Once again, it's been quite a long time since my last post.
I was working as a consultant for a big DIY retail company for the last 3 years and had the opportunity to be hired in the company. First, my mission did not change, but I'm slowly shifting from a Data Engineer role to a Tech Lead one.
So, that's not more work per se, but it's still quite tiring and I just want to enjoy some lazy time at home with my wife at the end of the day.
I still manage to find time for my Hive occupations, but struggle to write articles.
So, this will be some kind of update on my different projects and occupations.
Hive
When a got on Hive, one year and a half ago, I bought Hive and invested everything in dCity. Since then, I mainly rely on dCity for my Hive income.
At time of writing, I do own :
1.425 Hive
101.847 HP
10.148 HBD in saving
Which is around 72 $ at market value.
Half of my HP is delegated to leo.voter, which brings me around 0.12 Leo a day.
Some of those Hive & HBD came from my articles, but that's really a tiny part of it. As I use ecency on a daily basis, I do own around 10$ in ecency point, that I'll clearly use to boost this post. (Is there really another use ?)
At the beginning of the 2022, I set myself a (very reasonable) goal of 100 HP, which I reached some days ago.
As of now, I'll increase my Hive holding as well as my HBD holding.
My target HBD holding is 60 HBD, as it will give me 1 HBD per month in interests.
Personal Projects :
Voting Bot for Hive
I wanted to practice with some tech I don't use much at work. So I started a little project to retrieve data from the Hive Blockchain, prepare it and train an ML model on it. At the moment, I retrieve and prepare the data with Talend DI OSS on HiveSQL (a Microsoft SQL Server database holding the Hive Blockchain data), store it on a MySQL local server, and use a free Dataiku local instance for the ML analysis and model training.
I'm still working on the preparation step to get good model results.
Once the model gives correct results, I'll have to retrieve the data directly from the blockchain API, make the same preparation and feed the model for the prediction. I'll probably use a Python script for this, as the data will be much smaller and the API library in Python is quite complete.
VS Code extension :
I worked a lot on a Visual Studio Code extension that I now use for work. My work environement is mainly BigQuery and Terraform, and this extension helps me (and some of my lucky coworkers) to retrieve table schemas, dry-run request, auto-replace terraform variables in SQL scripts, etc... This has nothing to do with Hive, but it's one of the reasons I was not active here :)
A little software for osteopath
My wife is an osteopath. When I met her, she used an old app made upon a database, something like an Access database, that one of her teacher's made.
After an OS update on her Mac, it would'nt work anymore. So, I set my Data Engineer's skills in motion, retrieved the data through an ETL, and pushed everything in a SQLite database. Then I wrote a little software in Mono (C#).
That was nice and working, but C# and Mono evolved, and it's now almost impossible to code on my PC, and I don't have enough access to her Mac to improve it.
So, I'm slowly working at rewriting the app as an Electron.js app. The cross-platform thing is imperative for me. She has a Mac, I have PC's, and I used to be a die-hard Linux fan. So, when I write a code, it HAS to be cross-platform. Hence Mono, then Electron.js. I'm not a big fan of Python, and quite illiterate about UI design in Python. Electron.js was the way to go as I used to fiddle with HTML and CSS in the past.
This project will surely consume a lot of time also.
dCity
dCity is my first game on Hive. On a good day, I get around 0.150 Hive, and this is my main Hive income source.
Since I started playing, I made 174% SIM ROI.
One third of this goes to my personal "savings" and the other 2 third are reinvested in the game. I invest my "savings" into the HIVE/SIM pool for additional SIM earnings, and I get some Beeswap tokens in return too.
My current goal for dCity is to get back to 25% discovery chance (technology), as I got back to 13% after @gerber changed the education/discovery chance ratio. And, at the same time, try to reach 250 SIM / day in Tax Refund.
Rising Star
I started from scratch (no investment) some months ago, and I'm now a level 52 busker. I don't really buy packs and prefer to buy on the market at the moment as I know where I want to go. The current focus is on increasing fans (1300 at the moment), and my guitar luck for guitar lessons.
On a good day, I make around 2500 starbits, which I hope to improve by investing in fans. I'd be happy to reach 5000 starbits a day, so I could invest almost every 2 days. This would also allow me to swap one third of the income to HIVE.
Exode
I always liked space opera games !!
So when I discovered exode, I bought a pack and tried the game.
I think I'm bad at it ^^ ! I can start the spaceship but that's all ! No saved citizens, no freight... Thing is, as you can see by my different projects, it quite uneasy to find enough time to try to improve my efficiency starting the ship. Yet, the game seems nice and promising !!
Final thoughts
I connect to Rising Star every day, dCity once a week and I have a look at Exode's discord from time to time to check if there's a new feature. That's all I can do for now.
I also have a look at the last HIVE posts every day and try to upvote some interesting article.
I'm still quite interested in HIVE and will continue to check on it. My main regret is that I was unable to attract friends or colleagues to the platform. There is little to no posting about the subjects I really enjoy (being Data !!!!) which does not really motivate me to write articles. Yet, I'll continue to talk about HIVE around me, hoping to attract new users !

Glad to see you back! Lol I can relate with that Access Database... i'm planning a migration of my client's Access database that has grown a bit too big and gotten messy.
5000 starbits a day should be doable once you have the local mini tour support mission although folks say that earnings are better with the shorter missions. Don't have the time to show up every 15 mins or hour and click lol.
Hey! Thanks ^^ I actually didn't leave but mainly had no interesting article idea + very little time ^^.
So you need to rewrite their application as well? I suppose they used the access forms ?
I realised that data is not the problem, we have powerful tools to handle it. But re-write everything can be a pain in the a**. Visual Basic 5 & 6 where awesome for forms applications: no troubles for the UI, direct code access & declaration for buttons and UI elements, neat code completion... But it seems it was awful to maintain when the project reached a certain size and lots of Devs hated the syntax.
Concerning Rising star... Same here !! How many time did a completely forgot to check-in in order to launch a new mission !?! 3 missions a day + one or two lessons is the maximum I can handle!
Thankfully it is only the data that needs migration and the front end is Tableau. Might need to recreate that which should be relatively easy.
That's indeed better :) I really should give Tableau a try . They have a free testing version. I'll put in on my to-do list.
Do you have some feedback about Tableau ? Like, how does it compare to other viz tools you used, strong and weak points?
I haven't used any other off the shelf viz tools but Tableau is alright for visualizations once you get the hang of it. Definitely a step up from having to code everything on an Excel Dashboard.
There are some quirks depending on the database. Like with Access for example, you can't do full outer joins so I'm left having to put in some dummy data as a workaround.
Thanks! I'll have a look, and try to compare with some tools I've used (Datastudio, Qlikview, Looker, Power Bi and Business Objects). That could make an interesting article
