Hey! Thanks ^^ I actually didn't leave but mainly had no interesting article idea + very little time ^^.
So you need to rewrite their application as well? I suppose they used the access forms ?
I realised that data is not the problem, we have powerful tools to handle it. But re-write everything can be a pain in the a**. Visual Basic 5 & 6 where awesome for forms applications: no troubles for the UI, direct code access & declaration for buttons and UI elements, neat code completion... But it seems it was awful to maintain when the project reached a certain size and lots of Devs hated the syntax.
Concerning Rising star... Same here !! How many time did a completely forgot to check-in in order to launch a new mission !?! 3 missions a day + one or two lessons is the maximum I can handle!
Thankfully it is only the data that needs migration and the front end is Tableau. Might need to recreate that which should be relatively easy.
That's indeed better :) I really should give Tableau a try . They have a free testing version. I'll put in on my to-do list.
Do you have some feedback about Tableau ? Like, how does it compare to other viz tools you used, strong and weak points?
I haven't used any other off the shelf viz tools but Tableau is alright for visualizations once you get the hang of it. Definitely a step up from having to code everything on an Excel Dashboard.
There are some quirks depending on the database. Like with Access for example, you can't do full outer joins so I'm left having to put in some dummy data as a workaround.
Thanks! I'll have a look, and try to compare with some tools I've used (Datastudio, Qlikview, Looker, Power Bi and Business Objects). That could make an interesting article
