Today, on Friday 27th of July, a blood moon will rise in the sky. While astronomers have a simple explanation of this - it's merely a reflection of Earth's atmosphere during a lunar eclipse, the same effect that causes red glow during sunsets - blood moons are the sources of many legends and biblical references.

Lets have a look.

According to common belief, weird behaviour is enhanced during a full moon and all kinds of loonies come out of their holes. Blood moon is believed, by many, to enhance this effect, so do not be surprised if people do sudden and unexpected things on Friday. News.com.au reports from a police representative:

“Our busiest time on the job would always be after dark when it was a full moon and they’d always be unusual jobs or people doing stupid things. They’d never be ordinary. We’d get weird noise complaints. I remember one man using his power drill in his garage in the middle of the night. We said ‘Of course it happened on a full moon’. It was just odd behaviour ... stupid complaints and unusual complaints. They all seemed irrelevant at the time but they were always during full moons.”

But according to a report from abcnews.go.com, a pastor in the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio connects the blood moon occurrences with god and biblical events. Pastor John Hagee says that something is about to change and quotes verses from the Bible:

"And I will show wonders in the heavens ... the sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the coming of the great and awesome day of The Lord."

Looking a bit more into it, seeker.com reports of a guide for healthy living from the year of 1621, that advises to close those curtains tight, as the blood moons had effect on the subjects brain:

"When thou goest to thy bed... draw close the curtaines to shut out the Moone-light, which is very offensive and hurtfull to the braine, especially to those that sleepe."

The Inca people used to shake their spears at the blood moon, as their legends tell of a ravenous jaguar, that attacked the moon, making it blood red. The Incas then tried to scare the jaguar from crashing to Earth by scaring it away by making a lot of noise (nationalgeographic.com)
