Radioactivity

in #science8 years ago

First of all we need to know what radioactivity is...

Radioactivity is when an atom (or part of one) falls apart, splitting into two pieces. Often, one piece is quite small, and comes out at a high rate of speed. When that piece hits something else, it can do damage.
There is natural and artificial radioactivity:

Natural radioactivity

Natural radioactivity on Earth comes from radioactive isotopes which are an integral part of the tissue of living organisms. It also comes from Earth's crust and radioactive radiation from space, so called cosmic radiation. Intensity of natural radiation is mainly constant. This radiation affected the hereditary changes, mutations, and thus the evolution of living beings.

Artificial radioactivity

Chain-splitting atomic nuclei caused by bombardment with protons or neutrons was discovered in 1939. Awaken nuclei is being disintegrated and thereby releases a large amount of energy. That energy is called nuclear energy. Decomposition of radioactive element is followed by releasing of alpha and beta particles and high energy electromagnetic radiation (gamma-rays).

Radiation has multiple specific biological effects. Data about that come from sad events related to bombardment of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, then from random accidents when people were irradiated with high doses, from patients that were irradiated and miners working in uranium mines. It should be emphasized that we cannot feel radiation with our senses and that radioactive substances are in fact the most toxic substances in nature.

Radioactive isotopes are dangerous because they can include themselves into the element roundabout instead of nonradioactive isotopes. That way they can get into the ground, water and atmosphere and then into living organisms where they will accumulate. In living organisms radiation causes changes with harmful effects, for example, the development of leukemia, and large doses are deadly.

To radiation, particularly sensitive is the tissue whose cells divide rapidly (such as the mucous membranes of digestive tract, hematopoietic tissue, reproductive cells at different stages of development).

Nuclear waste

Nuclear energy is used to obtain electricity, and radioactive isotopes in science, medicine and other activities. The main problem associated with the use of radioactive material is the radioactive waste. It keeps that radioactivity for a very long time, so the problem is how to safely store it so it doesn't threaten living beings in the environment. Solid waste is usually collected, pressed and stored to inaccessible places, for example, buried in the abandoned mines. Radioactive waste water, which is used for rinsing, and air go through special filters and purification systems.

When building a nuclear power plant, multiple security measures are taken in order to prevent the accidental release of radioactivity. Nevertheless, we have witnessed unwanted accidents in nuclear power plants. It is therefore reasonable that building a nuclear power plant causes general discontent.

Sort:

wow, this is more than most people even begin to know. for further posts i would elucidate it in terms of ionizing radiation, which adds energy to substances creating ions and causing instability in the chemical bond structure.
also interesting are cosmic rays. and refractory materials. have you ever measured a coffee cup with a Geiger counter? or a granite counter top?
this is a huge subject and an excellent start. most people think radiation is like magic. thanks for the post.

Do you have citations for your images? Thanks!

do you ask this all the time? i am in no way being malicious here. this is an honest question. all i had to do is right click and click, see image info, to get all the citation i needed. is this not enough? i'm serious. not kidding or sarcastic. i've wondered about this for a while. what do you think about leaving images in comments? should those be cited as well? again, very seriously. i try to cite everything that i did not create myself. i know that on occasion i forget. i do try.

Yes I ask this all the time. No that is not sufficient. Clearly present your citations. Yes images in comments should also be cited. I forget sometimes as well, its easy to do. This sort of thing isn't an issue for sites like reddit where money isn't involved. However here money is involved, and lawsuits (unwarrented or not) can get thrown about much more easily. We need to try to do what we can to avoid this, not just for our own accounts but for the platform as a whole.

Going around asking for this is not fun for me, and it just makes people angry at me which I also don't like. However I feel it is necessary, and so I keep doing it. I am not trying to be a jerk, I am just trying to do what I feel is best.

whatever floats your boat. there is a difference between profit and donation. this platform is going down anyway and it is not for lack of citations. it is for a misunderstanding of what value is and what it isn't. also because of the whales using multiple accounts to funnel huge amounts of money out of the platform. #notallwhales it is crazy, just today, i've seen over a quarter of a million dollars transferred to an account with 25 reputation, no post no followers and no followed, and then transferred to polonex in pieces. no, nothing sketchy about that. let's all make sure and cite the pics we get from the public domain.

just because you FEEL something is best does not mean you are not being a jerk, trying or not. i know this because i am a jerk. i try, at least, to not be a tedious jerk. the world needs jerks, sometimes.

don't you get bored running around making sure people clean up after themselves? i hope it pays well. heck knows creating content and citing images doesn't pay. i hope steemit survives, but i don't think it's in the cards.

i'm not trying to get up your nose. i could be out of practice on my tact. how about, once a month, spend some time not being citation enforcer, and go look around for some of the real, actual problems here.

P.S. please don't flag me for being honest. not that you would, i'm just saying, because i never know.

All of those images are labelled for reuse (Using this)so i figured i didnt need to cite...Sorry if im wrong im still new to the site, this is my 4th post

I cite all images, even if they are labeled for re-use attribution of source is necessary. If they are not labeled for re-use then technically even citing them is insufficient.

Ok.. i wikl try to cite my images from now on,thanks for the info
