Silver Rounds vs. Silver Coins

Examples of a "Round"

Examples of a "Coin"

What's the difference?

  • A coin is minted by a sovereign government.
  • A coin is legal tender with a minimum face value.
  • Rounds are minted by private mints and have no face value.

Silver Coins

So today I will use Silver as example, because it is more affordable than gold, and may be easier to relate to for some.

I am going to use the African Elephant Silver Coin as an example, because I like the artwork.

If you take a look at each year from the most recent going back..

2017 1 oz Somalian Silver Elephant Coin (BU)
As low as : $19.46

2016 1 oz Somalian Silver Elephant Coin (BU)
As low as : $19.80

2015 1 oz Somalian Silver Elephant Coin (BU)
As low as : $21.20

2014 1 oz Somalian Silver Elephant Coin (BU)
As low as : $28.71

2013 1 oz Somalian Silver Elephant Coin (BU)
As low as : $36.21

2011 1 oz Somalian Silver Elephant Coin (BU)
As low as : $50.21

2010 1 oz Somalian Silver Elephant Coin (BU)
As low as : $65.21

2009 1 oz Somalian Silver Elephant Coin (BU)
As low as : $75.21

2008 1 oz Somalian Silver Elephant Coin (BU)
As low as : $97.21

2007 1 oz Somalian Silver Elephant Coin (BU)
As low as : $131.21

Now that is just 10 years!

Obviously each year they get more valuable, which is mainly due to being more rare.

Also if you take a look at other countries coins you'll notice the same pattern.

Chinese Panda

2015 1 oz Chinese Silver Panda Coin (BU)
As low as : $25.20

2011 1 oz Chinese Silver Panda Coin (BU)
As low as : $56.99

2009 1 oz Chinese Silver Panda Coin (BU)
As low as : $78.99

Conclusion

If you love art, or investing in precious metals, or even just collecting coins you should definitely take a look into these..

Also the images and prices were all from http://www.jmbullion.com where you can buy precious metals with Bitcoin!

Sort:

They charge more for them, but if you were to go to sell a 10 year old Somali elephant coin, would you find a buyer willing to pay anywhere near what jmbullion and others are charging?

I've also heard that an advantage of silver coins having a face value is that if traveling abroad, you can declare that you have $50 in money, when in fact it's 50 troy ounces silver worth a lot more. Is this true?

ah no sure if putting politicians on anything is smart...

I'm not sure what you mean, but welcome back to Steemit.

thank you, people are not happy with tag team politics it seems :)

your pictures are beautifully displayed ; a pleasure to view...

Happy UPvotes @ U...

@violingirljazz is talking about the Trump coin @majes commented above I'm assuming ;D

My main point was that "coins" go up in value each year and the rounds are only worth basically the silver thats in them.. and not sure about the traveling abroad :/

It is very true. The face value was set years ago on the amount of money it took to buy a certain weight of Silver or Gold. That was the way back many moons ago in Canada. Added you to my "Following" as well. DR

Chinese Panda's have always been my coin of choice. I don't care for rounds.

The indian head looks nice thu i dont have it :)

My Favorite round :)

Simply awesome. I need to get my hands on some of those coins! Show all my Trump hating friends! Lol. Followed.

Followed and upvoted even though it's an older work of art! Lol. But I love those shinny objects but I would say my favourite is the CAN Leaf. Thanks and I will be checking out you more recent posts. DR
