Good morning Splinterfriends and Hivians!
I am excited to write this piece today because the "KE Ratio" is a REALLY SIMPLE buy very important Metric that anyone can use to understand how their actions impact the Hive Blockchain/Ecosystem 😊
Now... I know what you're thinking... "Ooooooookay... but why should I care and how does this affect me".
I know it may seem daunting but by the end of this, my goal is explain this in such a way that anyone will be able to understand it, implement it and set goals that align with their vision/plan!
It may seem challenging at first... but let us begin - by the end, you'll be a PRO, I promise :)
I suppose understanding a term is always the first step in being able to implement and use it... right? Seems fairly logical to me!
The technical definition of the "KE Ratio" is your... you know what... I'm just going to call it your KE from now on - all that extra typing is a pain.
The technical definition and measurement of your KE is: "(Author Rewards + Curation Rewards)/Hive Power"
Yup. Told ya. Really simple... but what does that mean?? What can one use that for?? What can you infer at a glance from this number? How is it important???
Woah woah woah... easy with the flood of questions!
Ok let's do this one at a time...
What does this KE mean? Simple... it allows you to see at a glance, if you (or anyone) is keeping their rewards on the Hive Blockchain or pulling them out.
What can one use it for? It could be used as a starting point to determine if the account in question appears to be investing some of their rewards for the long term... or if they are using Hive as a way to make a few bucks.
What can you infer? Again, it is a great starting point for someone if they were curious as to how they look in others eyes or if you are curious whether or not someone is putting into or pulling out of the Hive Ecosystem.
The more extreme the KE the easier and more confident one can be about the inferred conclusion:
A really low KE like .1 or something means that account is investing almost everything they earn back into the Hive Blockchain by Powering it up or taking all the Rewards as Hive Power (HP). There might be some other reasons one has a low KE... but if there are... there won't be many and I can't think of them offhand.
A really high KE of 14 or 20 or more means the account in question has not kept much Hive Power compared to their Rewards... which means they are probably not interested in the Hive Blockchain long term... they have taken their Rewards and either exported them to and Exchange like Binance or they have converted them to other Hive Assets like Splinterlands, dCrops, Holozing, Moonkarts, etc...
Again - this is a STARTING POINT... not a "tell all, be all"...
Finally... I know you're all thinking "Cap'n... Why on Earth is this IMPORTANT??"...
Excellent question and for the answer, we must think about how we are perceived on Hive and what we want from Hive...
What do most people want, when creating content on Hive?? I would say, most people want their content to be enjoyed... appreciated... at the very least: read.
Second to that... most people probably want an Upvote! This isn't a bad thing, I mean the whole system is geared around rewarding people for creating content...
You create... you can earn rewards!
You like what people create... you give rewards... and you can earn rewards!
But... what kind of Upvote do you want?
Account X: .001 or Account Y: 6.83 or even Account Z: 37.23
Let's be REALLY honest with ourselves and with all the other folks here on Hive... Getting a MONSTER Upvote is AWESOME.
It's ok, we're all adults, we're not here to kink shame... or... whatever that term would be... 😶
But lets think about what the "Monster Upvote" actually IS... The accounts that can press the <3 and throw down 10, 20, 30, 40 or more dollars with A SINGLE UPVOTE...
This means, they BELIEVE in it... they've been here awhile or they've thrown TONS of money at it... either way... they're in it for the long haul... and if they see some content they like... they might click that upvote...
But... what if the account in question, routinely removes all their rewards and never keeps anything... by upvoting the content... the Whale can typically guess that most (if not all) of those Rewards are going BYE BYE... This is not beneficial to the Whale or to Hive...
If they know the account keeps/powers up a lot of Rewards... they may be more inclined to award them an Upvote!
In the end... a persons Rewards are theirs - they can do whatever they want with them!!
But also... a persons Upvote is their choice... and they can upvote content/accounts they see fit and align with their vision...
Just because you... or I... publish content... doesn't mean it will or SHOULD... receive an upvote. To receive an upvote, especially one from a whale... it must be worth something... which is COMPLETELY subjective...
Knowledge, humor, compassion, etc - these all have different values, at different times, to different people...
People will be people... but if a Whale is going to upvote some content... my guess is... they're going to upvote content they like... and give bigger upvotes to those who are likely to keep it around Hive...
While KE is definitely not the only important thing... it can be very useful when considering whether or not to upvote something...
But for me, one of the most useful ways to use KE is when an account participates in a contest...
There will be plenty of participating accounts... so which ones should the Community Team focus on?
Well... if you had two people and had to pick one to vote on...
Would you pick someone who has never invested in your project or the blockchain that it is built on...
Or...
Someone who invests/reinvests some of their Rewards into the community?
I would be more inclined to vote for someone who actively wants to be a part of that community... and I am sure you would too...
This is where KE will shine, in my opinion... being able to, at a glance have a really good idea of where those Rewards will go... can and should be a factor in whether or not they receive an upvote... and if they do... is it 100%? 80%? 10%?
There is a big difference between someone with a KE of 1.5 vs someone with 15.
Look at this article by Azircon:
https://peakd.com/hive-13323/@azircon/ke-ratio-as-a-guide
It does a wonderful job at highlighting some use-cases for this new metric.
Huge props to @azircon, @beaker007 and @slobberchops for putting this awesome tool together...
I think we just scratched the surface with this and it may change how people think about Hive and the power of it :)
As Azircon wrote, anywhere between 1 - 3 seemed to be a good KE Target and just shooting from the hip, let me tell you why I think 2 is probably the easiest/best # to aim for...
A KE of 2 means you took 50% of your earnings and Staked them... and did whatever you wanted with the other 50%...
That seems like a great balance of "I reinvested in this Blockchain because I think it is awesome" and "I earned some Crypto... time to cash it out on hookers n blow like I'm the Shamwow guy or RDJ"....
So why did I pick 2 as the easiest/best... because I. AM. LAZY.
Yeah that's right! Lazy.
Guess what the "Default" setting is on your Author Rewards... Yup... You nailed it...
If you decided you wanted to aim for "2" as your KE Target... just set all your posts to the default 50% HBD and 50% HP Payout... and then do what you want with the HBD!!
That's it. That's all ya gotta do!! The HP is 50% of your earnings... and since 50% is powered up... even if you sent ALL of the HBD to Binance... you'd never go above a KE of 2!!
Now... if you want to see what a person with an "Investor Mindset" looks like, let's take a peek at my KE.
https://beebalanced.streamlit.app/#8b126a93
That's right - a KE of .29! I have taken some of my Rewards in HBD and used that for things like DEC and other tokens... but I have also actively invested FIAT into Hive as well!
I set a goal of 10k HP in 2024... and I hit it! 2025, I want to double that... but need to be mindful of the Bull and not buy into any pumps!
Now, let's peep at another account... one of the accounts that caused me to write my previous article:
Splinterlands Hive Resource Extraction
Are you ready for the real utility of checking an accounts KE? Be ready... but you tell me... "Does this person want to build on/with Hive... or take from Hive?"...
They have earned... 50,000 Hive since they created their account in February of 2020... and how much HP do they have???
1,699... because they're mid unstake... but once that's done... they'll probably power this down too...
What's their HBD?? $13.30...
Of 50k+ Hive earned... they have almost nothing to show for it... and yup... they have a KE of 29.6!!
But you will find their entries every week into various contests around Hive... and while their rewards are 100% theirs to do whatever they want with...
I would encourage all Communities to start suggesting saving 10%, 25%... 50% of their rewards... and just like the Participants of these Contests can do whatever they want with the Rewards...
The Curators can VOTE for WHOMEVER they want... and perhaps take KE into consideration, when choosing who to vote for.
That's all I have for you today folks!! Thank you for reading and I would LOVE for you to join me in game!!
Naturally, after everything leading up to this moment, I do think Splinterlands and Soulkeep are some of the BEST web3 games out there!
They bring the #play2earn feature to the forefront of development as well as many opportunities for people to earn rewards - whether Player or Investor!!
If you're interested in the future of gaming, it's worth checking out!
You can sign up here: Splinterlands

... or not get one at all. I can see there are some who disagree with all this, and that's their choice. It's not everyone's cup of tea.
Exactly, it's just a tool - what people do with it is just like what people do with their Rewards...
Completely up to the individual :)
This is, in fact, an awesome tool! I have a very specific way I like to do manual upvotes only and it does involve checking in people's wallet and blog. Sorry, not sorry. I have to make sure I vote for people who share my values and vision for this amazing protocol.
I wanted to point something out: the KE takes into consideration HP. But what if the account in question is delegating all to a milker account with a KE of 69.420 he/she uses to extract while the main account (the delegator) has a low KE.
Maybe the KE ratio should consider net effective HP instead of gross HP.
Yes, that would require additional research. I do agree
Thanks for the tool for calculating the KE ratio.
Great post. I hope community curators will consider KE when upvoting entries to contests.
Hey dingus! Interesting metric you share with us. You see, I was one of those players dedicated to Splinterlands, I lived ranking, in brawls or otherwise in tournaments, in other words, I was a dedicated player and only in these last 2 years have I understood the full potential of this wonderful blockchain. My rewards have always been the default 50-50 in Hp which is of course essential for voting power and with the HBD I am putting that 15% APR to the test in a compound interest strategy, so I have been staking that 50% of HBD since the end of December 2023! In other words, dear, I am trying to recover the time I was in the dark, in which I only stayed on the shores of hive. Now I want to dive as much as I can into the depths of this great project. Regards!
P.S.: I had no luck with my plots bro, 0 totem fragments. Fingers crossed for the next harvest.

Me too!! That's what I am doing!
I love it - here's to 2025!!
Shame on me I sold a lot (most) of my SPL cards (not telling financial stats before, otherwise I would be in tears again to even think about it) but got most back into Hive and still buying nearly daily Energy with DEC haha to make some Glint and increase my SB cards - at least i am below the 1.0 mark.
Trying to keep my mini SPS stake stable at 500k, licenses and some deeds at least.
Good to see your name sir!
I hope you have been well and yes... those figures are pretty depressing lol
Here's to making some of that back in 2025... hopefully :)
Great post also nice people are using it, even tough there is discussion about the naming of the ratio. I like what the intention is and how people can use which up to everyone itself.
I you see any improvements on the tool or missing data (hive SPL related) I will try to have look into it.
I found something not taken into consideration:
Accounts with a lot of Delegated Hive but not much staked HP have a TERRIBLE KE lol
In the next version i will add receive HP and delegated HP in the table.
I do not think it has impact on the ratio it stays the HP of the person delegating it.
Listen ... you are using something named after a demon who beats and eats CHILDREN, with no recourse -- KE stands for KRAMPUS COEFFICIENT, which means the idea comes out of a mind that is OK with CHILD ABUSE being done to ALL OF US.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krampus
We are ALL adults here. Nobody gets to dictate to us about the stuff we own like we are little children somewhere in the myths of Europe -- does anyone know COLONIALISM IS OVER?
And before anyone even starts: while I will NOT be using the Krampus Coefficient to describe myself or anyone else because I am a CHILD ADVOCATE, just know that I have NEVER POWERED DOWN and SOLD. I have never played Splinterlands, and any desire I may have someday had has just been killed. When this PR disaster is done and the bullies with their little out-of-tune pianos are finished, that's also the net interest ANYONE IS GOING TO HAVE with any sense of HUMAN DIGNITY. My soul is simply not available to be whipped and devoured by the devil-worshiping powers that be -- I came to Hive for RELIEF from that, and here y'all come with KRAMPUS, a CHILD-ABUSING DEMON!
This is how y'all want us to be treated on Hive ... this is what y'all want us to answer to -- or anyone who felt human beings deserve to be terrorized like this?

I think it unfortunately named, but the intentions are good. You are obviously not a target of this post, in fact anyone who has 20k+ Hive power is probably not a target.
This post is about how to quickly see if an account on Hive is only extracting from Hive blockchain via Splinterlands contests.
Words and myths have meanings. Things meant well are not to be named for child-eating demons. There are already comments in the original post wanting to put this on @peakd next to EVERYBODY including YOU, so that everyone can be in YOUR BUSINESS about what you do with what is yours. I've already done some research on this.
Ask yourself: who gave ANYONE the authority to just put up a coefficient to judge ANYONE? The witnesses and the community get to weigh in on this before it becomes a thing, but there is a whole new account just out there to bully and badger and mock people without explaining because terrorizing people is just a game to the people it is associated with. Words and myths have meanings. Nobody names anything for Krampus by mistake, or wants to have the community back them in BEHAVING like Krampus by mistake!
No it doesn't. This is a decentralized environment, people can do as they please with their stake, or with the HIVE in their wallet. If Peakd want to implement something like this, that is their prerogative to do so, with their interface and their coders at their cost. If you don't want to use Peakd if they do this, don't. That is your prerogative.
So, you are for this to become a face of Hive -- and you think all of us should just accept that? No, sir. Absolutely not. Before you foist something on ALL OF US named for a child-eating demon, expect there to be pushback! Why would you come out in support of ANYONE being treated in this way? Why would you even think CHILD ABUSE is an image ANYONE should be promoting for ANY REASON to try to control ANYONE ELSE'S behavior?
oh... you are a nut. I will mute.
Enjoy. I don't need you to see me either -- so much the better!
Interesting idea, but that's probably going a little far.
I'm glad you think so ... especially since you did some of the data work to help this abomination come to life. Do you think of the people who play Splinterlands as your little children to punish with birch rods? Are you for putting a child-eating demon over everyone for the "crime" of doing what they want with their own rewards -- don't you think that is a little much? I mean, I see your user name there, but I wouldn't have suspected you having that kind of appetite until now!
The foolery is out affecting people not playing Splinterlands at all ALREADY, so don't even try to tell me this is limited to Splinterlands players. AGAIN, I've already started looking around on this PR disaster in the making -- we're trying to grow the chain, and y'all are out here backing things named for child abuse demons! Is THAT how we want Hive represented to the world? REALLY?
The KE thing, was @azircon's naming, not mine..., I simply won't vote or support leechers... period. If you're going to take out all your earnings, then look elsewhere for votes.
I'm not saying anything else about it, it's gotten too drama-like for me.
I have this person you are responding to muted :)
When you get associated with the wrong side of THIS ...

... and you don't think about being associated with that in advance, expect there to be drama when other people are sold this as a good idea. I don't presume to tell ANYONE how they should vote or use their earnings, and that's a thought I hope catches on a bit more than apparently it has!
Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moon light?
It sounds like you didn't actually read that link you supplied...
Krampus is, in most FAIRY TALES... The helper of SAINT Nicholas, since Saints were not often portrayed in a bad light.
You say "we are all adults here" and yet, seem to be acting like a child. Children get worked up about things like this... not adults.
You don't like the name, cool. Maybe it should be called the Grinch Ratio if it makes you feel better.
Personally, as a Christian myself, I don't pay attention to fairy tales. They don't both me.
As for how you feel about me or "y'all" - like most adults, if you don't like something, simply press the "unfollow" button like a rational person.
Now if you're done throwing a temper-tantrum and want to discuss this rationally, happy to do so... but if you want to continue to throw accusations and spew nonsense, like a toddler...
Then have a good day.
Of course I read it. I also am studied enough in European myth to understand the symbolism BEHIND IT. Just like St. Nicholas actually existed long before he was a fairy tale, there is a spiritual reality behind these things. Do you, as a Christian, want anything you do to be represented by a demon? We're not in Dr. Seuss territory here -- on a chain in which people are fighting against child abuse, a child-abusing demon is the choice to try to police people into leaving a certain amount on chain when nobody signed up for that. Literally, nobody was told that coming in. Who made the people who put this together the gods of the chain? And this is where you might want to think about the god of this world, and his need to play God and control everyone around him. OR, let's do it your way: if it is all based on just a fairy tale, why should anyone take it seriously enough to obey KE, if there is nothing to it? But you know better than that...
I am always "rhetorically memorable," on purpose. Tantrums there are none. There is a method to my madness. We are living in a time in which people who name the name of Christ are just fine with being in everyone else's business, wallets, bedrooms, and immigration statuses, but that spirit is NOT OF GOD. "I'm a Christian too" doesn't work here -- go on and read the content of some of these people you are going hard for really closely, and see if you could be in fellowship with them. Go read the content of the cabal folks back a little while and check out what spirit they are of. I have already done my reading back. Look down the comment string ... the veiled threat against me even using Beelzebub's name down there ... if this was just something cute and harmless, you think defenders of this would have gone THAT FAR?
As for following you, don't worry about that. I would not have seen you today except you were reblogged to the top of my feed ... that will not happen tomorrow. Somewhere around the throne of God, Captain, we will meet again in peace.
Until then, cheers.
Your explanation of why a higher KE might deter upvoters from whales is particularly compelling. It highlights the importance of community investment and long term commitment. The comparison of your own KE ratio with that of another account powerfully illustrates the point.
Thank you for saying that :)
I like the tool for the "quick glance" it provides. I understand it's just a tool and it's not all inclusive - but a good "estimate"
I look forward to seeing it evolve!
Cool article, thanks for the explanation! I was wondering what my KE would look like... and here it is. 💪
I'm not sure exactly why it's so high, I've put way more money into hive than I've earned here. So I have a negative extraction amount and was expecting closer to 0.
Hey buddy, that's a nice KE!!
Here's why it's not lower:
Your KE only measures [REWARDS]/Hive Power (Hive Powered Up)
Since you have more Hive Staked than your rewards, you have a KE < 1!
However, you have 8k Hive and 3,250 HBD floating around so those don't count towards your KE 😊
Thanks for sharing! - @azircon
