Star Trek Discovery: What is Up With Those Klingons?

in #startrek7 years ago

OK, yeah, I spent New Year's weekend binging the current nine episodes of Star Trek Discovery. I have watched all of the series, the movies based on The Original Series (TOS) of Star Trek, and two of the JJ Abrams movies. I was a kid when I watched TOS, so whatever, of course I liked it. TNG wasn't my favorite.

And at the end of this post, read my biggest beef about the Klingon's appearance.

Worf From TNG and DS9:

What's My Favorite of the Completed Star Trek Offerings?

So far, my favorite complete series was DS9, which is a controversial choice. In my opinion, it has aged better than any of the other series. I find that younger adults who start watching series tend to like DS9 the best, so that sort of confirms my opinion. I guess I'd pick Voyager second, but I liked ST Enterprise more than most people did. TNG had its ups and downs, and TOS is what it is.

So, you're welcome and free to disagree, but I'd probably rank the completed Star Trek offerings like this:

  • Deep Space Nine
  • Voyager
  • Original Series Movies / Enterprise
  • TOS and TNG
  • Abrams Movies (Yeah, sorry. I'm just not onboard for this alternative timeline.)

What's Up With Star Trek Discovery?

Star Trek Discovery Klingons:

I like it! I think the acting is strong and the plot holes may be filled in later. There have only been nine episodes. It irks me to pay $5.99 a month for one TV show with TONS of commercials, but it's really not fair to hold that against the show.

The Klingons are driving me crazy. They aren't just subtly different than the TOS or TNG Klingons. They look more like those bad guys from Farscape to me. By the way, if you've never watched Farscape, you might be in for a treat!

Klingons From The Original Star Trek Series:

I mean, these guys don't look like they're from different races. They look like different species. What's up with that? I'm sure some of you will know!

Sort:

In my opinion, Star Trek Discovery (STD....appropriate) is not part of the Star Trek cannon and I consider it a fake and a fraud. It will hence forth be know as "The Series Who Must Not Be Named!"

The biggest (and only real) problem with that series is that they had to try and make it a prequel. If it had been set Post-Voyager, I would not have had an issue. I can endure the SJW tilt and I don't even have a problem with the casting, it's just the fact that they felt they had the privilege to SH*T on the established canon is enough for me to never watch it.

btw, there is nothing controversial about your pick of DS9 as the best overall series. It clearly stands head and shoulders above the rest. This series was Ron Moore at his best with the various factions all rubbing each other the wrong way and the never-ending conflict on all sides.

I agree. I want to know what happens next in the TV series timeline. I'd love to catch up with Garek on Cardassia and some of the other important side characters. That's why I dislike the JJ Abrams movies so much. They ruined it.

At least JJ didn't f*ck with the original timeline, he built an entirely new one. I give him credit for that.

So are the Klingons suppose to go through a molting period that changes their looks ever few hundred years or so? I"m not liking the new look...

Yeah, I mean I hope it's not species insensitive to say that the ST Discovery Klingons look pretty repulsive. Maybe they win wars by just disgusting other races with their appearance.

I've read several different explanations. I think in one of the shows they talked about a virus created to spread enhanced DNA (like Khan in TOS). Then I read that the Discovery Klingons are just a really isolated branch, but yeah, that's weak, IMO. Yeah, I think the new series looks promising.

Right, I guess we shouldn't worry so much about every little thing. The new series certainly held my attention.

The appearance of the Star Trek Discovery Klingons has bothered me since the beginning of the series. Why do they look like that? The TNG DS9 Klingons were the best looking. I don't see why they couldn't look like that. Also when they speak Klingon it sounds different too. I would have also preferred if their story was set after Voyager. So far I like Discovery.

My order of favorites is:
TNG
DS9 / Voyager (shared second place)
TOS

Yeah, in the episode last night, the female Klingon had this really long skull and looked nothing like the females from other series. I don't know if it's supposed to be explained by a genetic mutation or that these Klingons are some other race. The thing is that"Kahless, the historical figure from the past, is portrayed to look more like Worf's type, so yeah.... weird.

I hope they’ll explain it at some point.
