Does the reward go somewhere? How about rep? Does it cost you voting power?
One question I've had come up semi-frequently from Steemians is around what happens when you vote on a post that is past it's payout. Because we see our vote go through...but the payouts closed! So how does this work?
Q: Does my vote give any reward to a post past the 7 day payout period? If so, does the author get it or does it go somewhere else?
This one's pretty straight forward. The answer is no. If you vote on a post with a closed payout you give zero reward to that post. This also doesn't effect the reward pool in anyway.
Q: Do I get curation rewards if I voted on a post that was past payout?
Unfortunately no. The curators cut was already paid out and no future votes get any curation reward.
Q: Does voting on a post drain my voting power? or put another way...does it count as one of my forty votes a day?
Yes. When you vote on a post, regardless of the scenario, your voting power percentage will decrease (about 0.5%.) Even if you un-vote somebody, you don't get it returned.
Q: Does voting after a posts payout has closed effect reputation?
This one has actually been tricky to get a well sourced answer on. My understanding is that a vote at any time, even past payout WILL effect reputation...both up or down (if it's a downvote.)
Q: So why do they even allow votes after the post was paid?
This has changed a couple of times over the last year, with there being points that no votes were accepted once it closed. Now, it's only rewards and resteems that close, but votes and commenting are left open.
The underlying idea is that it's still nice to see when you get a vote on something from waaaaaay back when. You know people are actually reading it (likely) at that point. This also lets the voter have that opportunity to give their support, even if it doesn't end up being monetary.

Sorry for off-topic. I'm not getting anything on my balance. Am I blacklisted or flagged or something? Where can I check this out? Not a single curation reward, no speak about post rewards. I know they are small but has anyone the same problem? I have 1 or 2 sbd in conversion (mistake I know).
Please?
Off topic is no problem.
I'm not quite seeing the issue at first glance since I saw entries under your rewards, claimed rewards and even a transfer to poloniex.
Is there a specific post or something I might look at?
I'm just on my phone right now, but can take another look when I'm home on my desktop.
No monetary rewards given upvoting an old post past its 7 days payout, seems understandable.
But C'mon, Not allow comments on those same old posts ¡SOUNDS PLAIN MORONIC! ¡Wadda Hell!
¡Upvoted & Resteemed! to rise awareness about this issue. }:)
I mis spoke on the comment aspects and edited it in the post. While comments used to close, now they do remain open.
Only things that close are post rewards and resteeming it.
Oh! Thank you very much for the clarification dear.
I was already dusting my whip to write & perpetrate the most frightening post ever seen on steemit. LOL
i comment on old posts that i find in the search function... Not allowing a post to "live again" seems counterproductive, to Steemit's potential to be a Resource of information, experience, and knowledge... Opportunities for secondary, residual income from old posts; could really work out for people who have provided a post that continues to help people.. like this one for instance..
very helpful article
Thanks for the Q&A, I think we're all still figuring the finer details of Steemit, even after being on and active for a while. @ironshield
Thanks for making this guide and your others @sykochica. I've used them to greatly increase the quality of my posts and Steemit experience. This had been one of those questions I had in my head.
It seems the purpose of being able to vote after a payout has been made is the same purpose that upvoting a several year old post on Reddit has, as you said, to show that someone appreciates the post still.
So, testing a theory here... If comments are closed, then I wont be able to post this one... If they are open (since the reply button is still here) then will upvotes on my late AF comment still be eligible for reward?
I Guess We'll See!
Looks good so far!
Wow... You have some great articles!

Thank you! I love helping others out. Even if it does stretch me thin at times.
Always feel free to ask questions. I really try to answer all of them, even if it takes me a couple days.
Thanks for the info.
Enlightening. Maybe it's just me but that seems unjust.
Why was it decided that a vote won't count after 7 days?
And why does the author only have the same time period to accrue from their work?
Sorry if these are fundamental questions but I'm still relatively new and this all sounds unfair.
I discussed this at some length just a few days ago: HERE
👍
I think before it was 1-2 days, so its better than before at least ^_^
Wow didn't know that.
So I guess there is the possibility in the future to extend if it was something the collective wanted.
Thanks for the reply
These other comments do look correct. We used to have two payouts, one after one to two days and the other thirty days later.
There's been lots of discussion over earning indefinitely on posts (the long tail. ) From what I've heard there, any open payout post has to be held in memory by witnesses running a copy of the blockchain. At some point it's a question of computing burden and overall speed (transactions are to take less than three seconds. )
Aldo, the vast majority of votes are placed in the first few days or so, then trailing off hard (typically. )
With all that said, I do expect this payout period to be adapted over time. I've seen great proposals on how to handle longer or indefinite payout windows.
Thank you. It seems now that voting on a post that is past payout does not in fact reduce your voting power.
But voting on your own new comment on a post that has past payout does reduce your voting power and seems to give a payout.

I haven't had the chance to read all you great post, but I do go down the list and try to understand some of how this works. The white pages is just to long and well boring, I tend to fall asleep reading them! Thanks for posting a question/ answer forum. Your explanations are clear and right to the point . Thanks for the help!
Thank you!! :D
I used to write the long guides myself. But figured they made it hard to just grab the answer you were looking for and go. We've got things to do on here! lol
Happy to help :)
Yeah this information is something lots of people can learn and enjoy so i also had to resteem this. Great job!
nice info, resteem it. it will be great if you can include the source, is it from the whitepaper?
I'll see what i can dig back up once I'm home from work and adulting. :)
I, too would like to see a source as I've read that authors can continue to receive rewards after the initial payout (and something about additional payouts every 7 days) but that may have been an older post relating to an older edition of steemit.
no way... i was just about to post this as a question...
thank you @sykochica, you must have read my mind!
Hehe, I'm in the minds of newbies! :P
comments don't really close after payout, do they?
Comments have their own independent payout time.
i've gotta run out the door for work right now...will get better explanation tonight :)
thanks ahead for following up! very kind service to the community you're running here!
So, my understanding is that when a comment is created, it starts it's own 7 day payout period. Then they are similar to posts (after closed) that they can accept votes and replies, but wont garner any more payout.
ah i see... that makes sense, comments seem to be treated like posts on the blockchain. Thanks!
Thanks I was wondering about this eariler today.
They should make the paypot period longer like 1 month.
It was up to a couple months ago. I'll be shocked if payout period isn't reapproached alot as time goes on.
great post
Thank you!
Thanks this reallly helped a lot
You're most welcome! Happy to be able to help out. :)
Wow, this is helpful and was totally unknown for me,
I didn't even know that comments and resteem are unavailable after the payout,
thanks :)
Thanks a lot, I had this question, too. I'm also wondering what happens with curation rewards for votes made within the 7-day payout period, say, on 2nd day. I've learned that they are diminishing in time, but in what proportion?
Technically it's not so much a time aspect (outside of the first 30 minutes of a post being created) but rather how many others have voted before you. The curation reward percentage do go down rather sharply, especially after that first big Steem Power vote gets applied.
While spitballing a number for you...after that first whale (high sp voter) it'll drop about 70-80%. The goal is to get your votes in early, before others, on a post that you think will be popular.
Thanks a lot! :)
Another good one !
Thank you!! :D
Hello, I have learned much from your helpful post on answering questions, but I am having problems even creating a post on the Steemit platform. I’ve been posting on other sites for years and Steemit seems to be difficult for me and I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. I know you helped me once before but I guess I just did not get it. Is there a Tutorial on Steemit to guide me through this process?
Heyas @mercysaidyes! :D
Yea, this place can be somewhat unique compared to other sites.
Umm...let me see what sort of guide I might find or put together for you over the next few days...just so you can have some solid reference materials.
Just to get you a couple of things with general helpful info:
There's the website: https://www.steemithelp.net/
And I have my old FAQ from the mentor group: Here
We can also schedule a time that I can just come by and spend some face to face time to help out. I know often it's easier just having the person right there instead of through text. :)
I just completed a new post on Steemit with great difficulty and after I finished the text I’m having problems uploading my images. "Stuck again"
Hrmm...do you by chance see a link/button that says Raw HTML in the top right corner of the main editor section? (it may not have anything there, so don't worry if you don't see it.)
Get my number from Wally give me a call if you have time please. Don’t mean to stretch you to thin but I need help.
No problem...I'll give you a call..try to make it there friday or saturday.
Hrmm...are you using that same site where you uploaded the pictures and then copied the links over to steemit? ...if you wanted to work on it atm. I know things can get quite frustrating when they're not workin right.
This post has been ranked within the top 80 most undervalued posts in the second half of Jun 08. We estimate that this post is undervalued by $26.92 as compared to a scenario in which every voter had an equal say.

I think it's a good thing that they allow upvotes even after a post is closed. Isn't the point of upcoming really to show your support? And it bumps it up one more, possibly getting a little more attention?
@sykochica, this is some valuable information and learning to me. Thank you.
Why not have a second tier system like 1 year and 3 years so on for rewarding old contents.
Thank you! I had time wondering this! just when I was not looking for the answer to this question I was given the solution. There goes my support, even if it is not monetary!
Thats its a problem !!!
Great to know. Thanks for the information. I was looking online for what happens when you over vote. I kind of voted way many times a couple days ago and now it says that my voting power won't reach 100% until 80 hours, so i was curious.
really useful to know...
Thank you for the information. I gave you a small upvote to show my appreciation. I will be giving small upvotes to older posts that I really enjoy and/or learn from in the future.
Ah, that explains a lot.
I hope Steemit does make longterm returns on posts somehow - that it's cyclical per content vote count per week per user instead of just content vote count per week for the user one cycle. If that is the case, it would be worth working on a high investment content to then create libraries of data that can support future content - more content, less social virality and networking for sustainable income.
OR, hopefully they add an automatic "Tip" or "Patreon" type system for channels or future content (even after old payout) to particular users/creators.
What if i commented on an old article and upvoted myself. Will i get something after 7 days?
