Yeah, I totally agree: even tough Steem is around quite a while and has quite a mass-appeal, it still didn't take off as much as it could have. Since social media platforms on EOS are able to do the same thing as Steem, just better, it will be a though competition for Steem.
The same is true for Facebook: with the recent scandal in mind, users are slowly learning that their data is very valuable and the "free" service provided by Facebook is only a small compensation for what they give away. I admit, that this is going to be a long process, but unlike past efforts to take down Facebook (like Diaspora: https://diasporafoundation.org/), social media dApps on EOS (or Ethereum, if well executed) have the potential to take down Facebook, by offering ownership of data and a compensation for sharing the data.
awesome stuff! no single company will bring down facebook. but an entire free market can. eos might as well empower a giant number of communities and individuals to join forces. it could be sooner than we think. maybe a few years until facebook becomes irrelevant as it clings to every bit of control.
SMTs are a possibility too.. (my wishful thinking) but it doesn't seem like they're ready to launch any time soon..
Exactly: it's very difficult for a single competitor to take on Facebook (not even Google+ managed to do so, and it had Google pushing it), but maybe a huge number of distributed, but interconnected, communities can.
amen brother. it's coming.
and not just facebook. even governments are going down.
maybe not the entire government but less control.
One step at a time, let's see what effect this will have on Facebook first :)
