It's supposed to be a publicly accessible blockchain. Steemit is no the only way to access the steem blockchain. It's just the one that comes from the developers/investors.

You should. You might want to cross post, or someday publish a book or something. Or just to keep your work for yourself. That way you don't have to come back to the block chain to reference that work. Immutable or not.
