It's supposed to be a publicly accessible blockchain. Steemit is no the only way to access the steem blockchain. It's just the one that comes from the developers/investors.
Only way you are being censored is by the big players, i.e. whales either throwing their votes your way or not.

You should. You might want to cross post, or someday publish a book or something. Or just to keep your work for yourself. That way you don't have to come back to the block chain to reference that work. Immutable or not.
