After I tried all the possible options to make my place among the minnows, to the big fish, I realised one thing. No matter how good your articles or comments are, you can't do it without having a considerable amount of Steem Power!
MY ADVICE: Buy at least 500-1000 Steem Power from the very beginning and then your upvote will mean something, especially in the new context, after Hard Fork 19!
I agree with OP, buying SP will certainly speed up the growth. But if one thinks if puchased much SP will be enough for profits, with self-voting, then think again. Without proper, good content such efforts are doomed. You can certainly try it, if you dont trust me.

If you have 1000 Steem Power your voting power is $ 2.5/ upvote. You can vote 30 times a day with 100% voting power.
Conclusion: ROI will occur in 30 days.
I think 1000 Voting power will result in around $1/upvote. Also one can vote only 10 times per day as each vote depletes 2% of voting power and voting power regenerates 20% per day.
It's not as good of a ROI as mining contracts, but you get to keep your initial investment as well, so it's arguably better.
At 1000SP you would make about $15/day upvoting yourself I believe, so a bit less than 1%/day.
You are right. That is the only way out for the minnows, to invest huge. However, that will be possible if you have the resources as well as being a risk taker. Some have the money to invest but are not risk takers. Some others do not have.

I admit it's very frustrating when you've put a lot of time and effort into writing about something and you find you get like 0.16 Steem Dollars for it. I've been buying a few dollars worth of SP every so often and I must admit it helps a little.

investing to SP at the beginning seems very good idea. when our power is is big, it is easy to get notice i guess.
but without a good content i wont works really well also.
Not all the people have the capital or trust to invest, some will go the hard way. Investing is fast and clever.

As soon as I joined Steemit I my $1000 Steem Power investment turn into +$2000 just by the rise in the price of Steem. Invest if you think the prospect for Steemit have a rosy future. Not only that your voting power is larger.
