The underlying power of the Steem blockchain - parallel social media engine

in #steem7 years ago

So why is there Steem and Steemit, is it not the same?

As a Steemit user you might have noticed different mentions of Steem and Steemit, and while they are related to each other, they are not the same. So what are they and how are they different from each other?

Steemit is a social media platform quite similar to Reddit. However, it interacts with the Steem blockchain, by storing and retrieving data, and therefor is limited to the rules set out for interacting with Steem. The Steem blockchain is basically like a huge ledger which holds every interaction(transaction) that has ever taken place and Steemit acts like a gateway, allowing users to interact with Steem. However Steemit is just one gateway and one perspective to interact with Steem.

Steemit, like Reddit, can be categorised as an micro blogging social media platform. Yet there are many different types of social media platforms, all servicing their own niche. Some of the most notable would be Facebook, Youtube, Instagram and Twitter. The true power of Steem is that is possible to build additional gateways, that copy functions of other social media platforms, and interact with Steem in parallel, while holding true to the same core principles, which I believe set Steem apart. Another article on this another time.

The future of Steem

I believe that in 5-10 years there will be clones made of most of the big social media platforms that interact with Steem in parallel. Users will be able to have only one account and use this for the different gateways, each serving their own niche. Users will have the same voting power on each of these platforms, there will be no need to start from scratch on each platform.

So in essence Steemit is not only just competing with Reddit, but over time as Steem grows and more developers start building layers on top of Steem, Steem will be competing with every other social media platform out there. And as long as the core values of Steem stay superior users from other platforms will gradually migrate to Steem and Steem will dominate the social media scene.

Just wanted to share some of my thoughts on Steem and why I believe in it's future. What do you think? Please share below.

This is such great info! But I wonder why would there be a need for other clones of existing social media platforms? Has the internet not become saturated with start-ups of these kinds already? Does anybody know how I can use Steemit it to my advantage if I already have the major social media platforms? There must be something special in it and how we use it could unlock its full potential. Great topic btw. :)

The reason for clones is that current social media platform are owned by a small group of share holders, who get most of the profit. Only the top content creators of these platforms also get a piece of the pie. While on Steemit everybody is a shareholders, you get paid in shared. So unless the shareholders of the big social media platforms are willing to give up most of their profits, there will be a need for something else.

I see. That's so interesting! And saying that "everybody is a shareholder" must mean that the information people are pouring here on Steemit is becoming some sort of the currency of investment. This could be the powerful thing about this platform as people get rewarded in terms of the value of information they present. Such rewards system would also propel the future of this platform. :D

I bet that once a lot of users migrate across from youtube the government will crack down on Steemit some how and find a way to force censorship. Youtube started off as a platform for free speech and has now become yet another mainstream leftist propaganda outlet. You can see this in the trending page with all the Left Wing comedians trending. You will never see a an anti-feminist trending on youtube for example. Even though we know those channels get a lot of views.

I see what you mean and its an important note that regulation over media censorship has already been in tact for quite a while now. And as an addition to what you've said, the government might even be more interested in the money making matters here on Steemit as monetary value of information is readily shown to public. However, given the type of content and information here on Steemit is clearly dictated by the curating environment the platform has in place, that is Markdown, which is dominantly text. I don't think Steemit would aim to be the next video storage and streaming social platform.

I hope so. I have high hopes for steem to replace youtube and facebook. Google and Zuckerberg have had a monopoly on those types of platforms for too long.

For Steem to really take off it should make more of a video based platform similar to youtube but without the censorship and leftist bias in trending etc. Most people don't want to sit and read articles all day.

I will do my best to try and get the word out there that there is a much better alternative to youtube.

Awesome. Sounds like a noble work. But hey, the possibility is endless. :)

Hope you are right brother. I see a bright future for the platform too.. There is nothing else in the world right now that provides such beautiful freedom. Cheers for the amazing article and thanks for making me smile. This should be on trending page 🍻

Steemit is a social media platform very similar to Reddit. However, it interacts with Steem blockchain, by storing and retrieving data, and is therefore limited to the rules specified to interact with Steem. I think so ...

So I could hypothetically create a new, say, Instagram on the Steem blockchain and people would be able to log in with their Steemit accounts?

Yes that is very true, developers are actually working on that right now. I will see if I can find the name of the project.

AFAIK, it is Steepshot.

Thanks!

Thanks for the clear explanation! You have solved a lot of people confusion toward this two words!

I am glad I am able to solve some confusion :D

These two words are the most confusing!

I'm exited to see different platforms emerge for consuming Steem content... like you are saying (a Instagram clone, Twitter clone, etc.)

I can see why you think there will be multiple clones in the future, serving different needs but what about closed groups? Do you see any way of producing the closed forums that people sign up for and have access to on a limited basis? I assume that is difficult to deliver on a public block chain and may even be unwanted.

Good information.

Good info. I really hope this happens especially with all the censorship going on and ad money being taken away from creators.

Imagine everybody in the world using those soon-to-be-built social platforms that run on the Steem blockchain. This could mean that the economy as we know it is going to change BIGTIME.
In the long run, this could mean that big banking kartels are going to be destroyed! I sincerely hope that as many people as possible hop aboard the Steem train.
Thanks for the clarification @juliank. Excellent post, as usual👍.

I totally agree, steem is a place where like minded people trade opinions and information world wide that isn't censored. As long as people can talk freely and express their knowledge to others the steemit community will grow and knowledge will transfer freely to the people of the world.

I hope Steem & Steemit will grew and will be developed very fast.
thanks for share your post

Im such a Steemit noob, I need all the info I can get!

It has Great potential... It will grow as much as youtube... There is a need to simplify the layout... rest all is ok..

you have a great future on steemit

I dont quite think steemit will have the user base that some of these big social platforms have. Not everyone is tech savvy or cares to blog. Instagram/twitter/snapchat are super easy to easy and they have apps, meaning they are centralized. Not sure how a decentralized system could work life how you are proposing.

Having said all of this, I think it would be amazing if steemit did grow in both size and value, but the only way to do this is through positive user interaction and since steemit gives out tangible rewards there will always be a lot fo scammers and garbage content created by people just wanting a quick dollar

Quite possibly. But with the rewards system they already have could be the key to making this platform useful and of high value if and only if Steemit could maintain stringent measures to thwart those scammers, bots, fake accounts, and automated upvotes. In any case, garbage content could already die in itself for being recognized as garbage and left ignored by the Steemit community; that is if the kind of people on Steemit aren't garbage collectors. :D

And in attracting mass user base, there's a big potential to doing that if the developers would focus on the user design and experience. And you're right, if Steemit aims to just become yet another Reddit or Facebook, not everybody cares to microblog especially on a still dry looking platform as this.

I agree. If you have too many people just adding garbage to the pile then nothing will get accomplished. But in time with a bit more moderation and participation from those that want to help out, this pplatform could be awesome

Yes i think so, steemit will be the most favorit social media in the future like facebook, instagram, and twiter.
Your good @juliank

That was really a great explanation! Thank you!

I am new to Steem and the whole cryptocurrency thing. What I would like to know is how I can utilize Steem for my business. I work for a graphic designer and printer. We may be a bit old as we are both in our mid to late 40s, but we do understand that in today's world, social media is THE way to advertise. I am worried though about advertising costs as we don't have large enough amounts of followers on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to simply post our product offerings. I am most curious to know if Steem can be a more effective option.

It's a huge advantage that developers can build 3rd party apps on top if it.

Steemit isn't simple. Earning money is a great incentive but the difficulties new users have scare people away.

But that's hopefully solved by 3rd party apps.

I wonder what happens if way more users "fight" for the same sized rewards pool...

Well said @juliank. I think Steem is the future of social

Wow, thanks for this post. I knew Steem was a great idea and has a bright future. However I didn't know that Steem had THIS much potential.

thanks for the info.... i just dont like the idea of creating more....it become too similar to each other... we should just spread it more... and maximized its potential...

The way Steemit is growing it will surpass Facebook and other social media platforms in the years to come in value and popularity. This cannot be gauged by number of users alone. Facebook has so many members not only because it has been around for a decade(as a first mover) but also because everyone needs to have an account in order to take a look at what others are doing!

Most FB users are not active for the reason given above - they merely lurk and gape at pictures and read what others have posted. Those who are active mainly post meaningless selfies and nonsense - reason why I stopped looking at Facebook.

There are a few useful posts here and there, more the exception than the rule.

Very few selfies on Steemit and anything that may come close to the nonsense that one sees on Facebook is just an effort by someone who may not be the most talented writer around but still wants to make it on Steemit.

Great post by Juliank, thank you!

nice information! resteemed :D

This was very informative. You were clear in explaining the concepts to the users of our platform.

I really hope you are correct on everything mentioned in your article friend.. We all hope to see stern it go up up and away in the near future..
Cheers for boosting moral and best of luck to you buddy :)

Could be possible, actually I think it will happen, somewhere I read that there is website soon popping up as an alternative to blogging dealing only pics! I forgot the name, I did visit that website a couple of days ago and it was under construction!
This could be revolutionary
!

Thank you for sharing your view @juliank! I joined Steemit recently and in my first post I mentioned that this is a project where endurance is needed, and that I love. I agree with you that there is future in here, but we the users must ensure that future by writing interesting and high quality posts and performing careful and responsable curation of the posts. We need to share our views and find a common ground for a solid grow. That is the only way to control scammers trying to take advantage with garbage posts. I am all in to help building a bright future for Steemit. Cheers, and thanks again.

Hmm... So maybe Steem is more akin to Google's social media branch? Just that interactions depend on the blockchain?

Steemit is a social media(more accurately a blog), and Steem is the basic foundational "distribution database system" which is based on blockchain technique. In Steem, the top 21 most Prestigious users of Steemit record the all data in Steemit.

This post has received a 13.81 % upvote from @booster thanks to: @juliank.

There is still so much potential in Steem and Steemit. That is why i am powering up and holding on to my Steem.

I can agree with everything noted here except that in 5-10 years there will be clones...no, I think that this will be sooner, the blockchain world is very volatile but if you expand this volatility into a 20 years for example, everything will look normal... so as an internet year is like 5 normal years, crypto year is much faster.....
