Experimental

in #steem6 years ago (edited)

I've noticed that lately more often than ever before, as our attention span rapidly deteriorates into nothingness, shorter pieces of content have began to gain ground on the long articles based on extensive research everyone was aspiring to create before.

This goes for Steem, not other social media platforms where most of the content is traditionally of a short format.

When I say that short pieces of content are gaining ground on their polar opposite I don't mean that they are gaining much on the valuation side (because they aren't), but rather on the consumer spectrum. People seem to engage more with shorter content nowadays.

Mostly because it's easier to consume, makes for a great pass-time (which most like to indulge in), but most importantly, it's not time-consuming.

People, especially Steemians value their time greatly. They not only don't want to waste their time, or invest it in someone or something that doesn't bring them some sort of value in return, but they will get mighty upset if a piece of content doesn't yield the value they expected to receive from it.

That, amongst an entire set of other, psychological tidbits is why people tend to gravitate towards shorter content nowadays, and it's only going to get worse as time goes on. This creates a whole new group of individuals to engage with on an entirely different level than we are used to by now.

Considering the fact that this group is only going to grow in the future and that there is not much we can do to change that, it should be more than obvious that it's about time to start catering to what's soon going to become, a majority of our followers.

For those reasons and many others, I'm dipping my feet into this experimental phase of my Steem journey.

From now on I'll focus on the flipside of the coin.

Meaning that I'll strive to create shorter, more engaging, creative and witty content for you to enjoy. The topics I'll cover will still be mostly revolving around STEEM and crypto in general, but I'll throw in some lifestyle, personal information, goals I aspire to achieve and some genuinely experimental content in the mix.

The tone will be much different than that of my regular posts. Strictly non-formal and infused with chill and character. I'll carefully listen to your feedback to try and better understand if I'm hitting the right notes with you, or am I completely failing to perform on your expectations and desires.

In the process of determining my rate of success, I'll completely remove the $ valuation of my articles out of the equation.

The only thing that I'll put my entire focus in from this point onwards and the only thing I'll use to evaluate my success is your feedback.

If I'm able to bring value, whether it's comedic in nature, in form of a piece of information you didn't know about and find interesting or useful, or any other way for that matter, bringing value to the consumers of my content is the only thing and everything that counts.

It is only when I'm going to be able to constantly deliver that kind of value without taking more than 3 minutes of your time, is when I'll truly find myself successful.

In retrospect, myself and everyone else, should have adopted this mentality a long time ago.

Nevertheless, that's not something I'm going to metaphorically beat myself up about because I can't change my past, I can only influence my future so I'll work on myself to be better for you, myself, and anyone else that ever stumbles upon my content.

I'm super pumped about starting this process and really looking forward to seeing where it takes me moving forward into the future and how well it will be accepted amongst community members.

I have seen the same and adjusting accordingly. I see it as try to spread myself more broadly itself of deep. I think it also adds value as we expand the ecosystem and its potential.

That's the best way to move forward. I agree, but as time goes on and more dapps come along, I worry about the chance of most Steemians going down the overboard road and clogging up the network with a bunch of "low quality/effort" quasi-posts like those dreadful drugwars battle posts....

I agree, people [ myself included ] are not willing to spend long amounts of time on things they aren't sure of [ articles, movies, tv shows, etc ].

That's why I'm actually currently in the midst of 2 development projects that deal with this new behavior. I think short content is fine, as long as it's good content.

Headline skimming is dangerous as you're not getting the vital facts that matter. We need platforms that cater to this new behavior while doing so in an ethical & intelligent way. We'll see where I land on that ;^)

New behaviors form all the time in societies, best we adapt & help nurture a positive outcome of them rather than rage against an unstoppable force.

Good luck with your experiment! I'll be watching along to see how it goes [ and whether or not I'm wasting my time on these projects lol ] :^)

Hey @stuffbyspencer,

That sounds interesting and I would like to know more about what you are building. If you aren't comfortable disclosing details here, we can chat on discord. I would enjoy picking your brain about it and possibly even be able to contribute some ideas that might be helpful as I have gained a detailed insight about Steem in the two years spent on here.

100%! Too many people spend way too much of their time trying to stop or prevent the unstoppable. Thus they are blind to the heights they could reach if only they invested that time in "learning the game" and adapting.

Thanks for such an insightful comment!

Yeah man, if you feel like hitting me up on discord [ Spencer#3319 ], I'd be more than down to talk about this concept. I think it could be a good discussion! :^)
