When downvoting, a user should be required to reply with a reason. This way if the downvote is unwarranted, the community can downvote the downvoter's reply...or at least reply themselves with reasons why the OP was valid content to begin with. This would also help users learn by example what content is considered perfectly valid vs. inappropriate.
Thoughts?
Perhaps a confirm for down votes? because of its proximity to the vote review button I keep down voting by accident.
Good idea.
I don't agree, posts shouldn't be required for any voting.
I'm only talking about downvotes. And maybe the answer is not to require a reply with a reason for the downvote. But how about at least allowing users to downvote the downvote? Anyone have better ideas on how to discourage frivolous downvoting? Does anyone else think frivolous downvoting of perfectly good content is bad for the platform?
There are and will be frivolous downvotes but I don't think they'll make much of a difference when the vast majority of votes will be legitimate.
What about frivolous up votes?
You mean like upvoting spam and offensive content?
If you did something about those there would barely be any upvotes on Steemit. =b
I'm downvoting this just to be "that guy"; and for satirical purposes.
It's a good thought. However, don't you think the people who have any downvoting power are intelligent enough to figure out they have nothing to gain by downvoting anything else than harmful content? You probably loose potential income by downvoting, so it's already disincentivized. On the other hand, harmful content can hurt the whole platform, so those with a big stake will have the incentive to powerfully downvote such content.
Yes, you would think anyone with serious down voting power would only down vote harmful content. But check out the posts below (with steemd.com URLs, although the @ symbol is breaking the links). I'm not saying everyone should agree with the content. But I do believe these posts added some value to the platform. And they certainly contain no harmful content. Yet they were down voted by someone with a LOT of weight. Pretty disappointing and discouraging, I have to say. Makes me wonder why I'm spending time I really don't have in an effort to add some value here. Although I do have a sizable stake, so of course I will continue trying. But will others continue if they experience the same thing? Which takes us back to the reason I submitted the OP to begin with.

I think we have to be very very careful with downvoting, a lot of the content in Hive is art, ideas or personal thinking, so its very difficult to be critic about it.
Hive Believer has a strong urge to push the downvote button because of the title of your blog post. Mischievous teasing Believer. 😏
but, of course we would have upvoted, had we not stopped in too late! Next time friend.
Hive Believer believes in you!!
