4 Uses Of Steem Outside of Steemit

in #steem7 years ago

In order for a currency to be worth something it has to be accepted. Right now steem is useful for voting power, which is a unique benefit to give a currency. And of course you can buy and sell it on the market if you are one for risk. But if steem is going to go to the moon, or at least outside of our atmosphere it will need to find more uses and be accepted outside of the steemit site.

1.) In-game Currency

Yes, this is where a geek starts, with video games. If you read my posts it will come to no surprise I'm a gamer. Games have their own currency's where you can buy stuff in game. This can help you level up faster, be equipment for a character, be purely aesthetic or unlock different maps and levels. But what if that money had value outside of the game. What if you could buy an item with some steem or even better, sell your items to another player for steem? Video game markets work but they are limited to the scope of their world and items, even when bought with real money, have no value outside of the game. This can change if steem is implemented properly into one of these virtual worlds

2.) An Online Market

You can buy almost anything online. Sites like Amazon and eBay have you covered no matter what you are looking for and shopping online is looking to be the norm in the future. Right now you use your credit card to make purchaces and pay that card off. But what if you can skip those steps. What if you got paid in steem, went to the market and bought whatever it is you were looking for. or sold your items in steem. When people can buy real world objects with a currency it gives that currency much more weight and value.

3.) Food

Food is the kind of the basic purchase. If you can buy food with it, then it is a currency. And although it would be nice to walk into any restaurant and use your steem card to pay for your meal, that level of adoption is far away. But that doesn't mean online businesses cannot accept it. What if you could order your groceries or a pizza online and use steem. It would do a lot to legitimize the currency.

4.) Transfering Money

This is a big one. Sending money costs fees. Every bank and even PayPal have their own fees. But with a cryptocurrency you can minimize or even, in some cases, eliminate them. Look at steemit. If you are friends with someone on here and want to send them 1,000 steem, all you have to do it transfer it to them. No cost involved. Don't believe me, transfer me some steem and see for yourself :p. And yes that last part was a joke. But being able to send and receive money, worldwide, with little transaction costs puts the money at and advantage over traditional currency.

Remember it is a digital currency that can be the same as the money in your bank. It all depends on who is willing to accept it.

It would be great to see a wider adoption of Steem. An online market seems like a good possibility down the road. You are right that transferring money is a big use for steem, not only because you can do it without fees but also because it only takes 90 seconds. This has to be the fastest cheapest option for sending money. If I am sending or receiving any kind of money, I would always choose Steem if it is an option. Thanks for your post.

@themightyvolcano yesterday this came to mind like sending money to people has become so easy and cheap with Steemit and cryptocurrencies in general.

@whatageek this is the adoption we are all waiting for mate.

I pray for the day when this is the case. My issue though is that many technologies have sprung up to address some of these issues. That said, what is the place of steem in these spaces given that this is the case?

I think the Online Market will be prove to be the most productive. Wnen people see the ease and mainstream use of crypto, more will adapt to it. Just a matter of time. Thanks for the alternative currentcy share.

"even when bought with real money, have no value outside of the game. "
I would say this is untrue now. There are gaming tokens that can be bought with Bitcoin now. Since Bitcoin is generally recognized by the public and will always at least have some value, these gamer tokens can always be exchanged for some of that value.

Yes it would be too interesting develop games that works with steem, this cryptocurrency need its CryptoKytties

i think there are some already . try searching steem games etc

I think Steem is a great place for research teams to place scholarly articles about their research so thay they can raise funds for it. Good way to fund research projects that can find interested, like minded people to help with funding.

I wasn't knowing steem is that much useful, i though steem was limited to steemit only, but it has other uses as well apart from steemit only....
guess i have to believe more in steem than before, it will help more...

Thanks for shared your great ideas to herewith us as well as thinking about another way to be useful steem @whatageek
I think that online marketing is a good choice here, As a passage of time people will known about its effectiveness.
i definitely resteem this post because its great

Steem is sure to jump over Facebook and all SNS.
Because of steem power.
Congratulation Nod ^^. Please open New online world !!!!

wow you have made some really solid points there the truth is if this becomes a reality everyone would benefit from it because the value of steem would increase, we would also be able to save up money we would have lost as transaction fees and companies would also benefit. it wont be bad to start a campaign for it tho we support the idea

The use of steem is increasing day by day...hope it would be the largest among all the digital currencies..

The use of steem outside SteemIt is wider than the mind can imagine. It can be use as a form of payment for a services rendered. And guess what? It is actually safer. Take for instance, I mow the lawn for my neighbor and instead of him paying me in normal currency, he pays me in steem, it means, I cant misplace that money, the money can't be stolen from me. It is safe on my SteemIt account, provided of course, my SteemIt password is safe.

I think I buy into the idea of the use of steem outside SteemIt.✌️

Very captivating points ,, just as i dream of steem going from traditional currency to one that is globally accepted, All these points in addition to conversion to other currencies, as a means of payment for services as in transactions .

great post daer

I think steem is going to be HUGE!! Keep up the good work!👍

The success of the STEEM blockchain is the flexibility it provides for other applications. Steemit is definitely the main gateway and with the upcoming hives update, it will become a more direct competitor with Reddit. Many other platforms are also being built to be direct competitors to other well known platform. For example, Zappl is like Twitter and Dtube/Dlive are like YouTube. There are others coming as well. This has not brought issues of scaling yet as per Blocktivity, STEEM continues to be the best in its class with transactions and bandwidth. Lastly, the coming start of SMTs could also bring the potential of more mainstream content providers as they look to monetize their content. The potential is definitely there given the ecosystem the blockchain is supporting.

I have an idea that is sort of related- Those with high influence on the network will be able to leverage this for cheaper products/services, as companies will know the potential positive publicity they will receive should someone with high influence on steemit write a positive experience about their company.

That might be more assumed. But I hope this happens.

I like the Idea of in-game currencies. I think it's really awesome to make the in-game coins out in the real world. Gamers invest time and effort too and that can be more expensive than money so why not let them get what they deserve?

FOLOOW ME. THANKS

It would be nice to be able to use Steem when travelling. Since its not tied to a country's currency there'll be less hassle when transacting with it abroad.

@siddiqurit i am a crypto enthusiast, but certainly not yet as adept as you. I will be hanging around your blog frequently to get some lessons and tips.

Where can I get my STEEM Card? That would be cool if we could develop blockchain backed debit cards, credit cards, food stamp cards, and I'm a gamer too and would love games to accept Steem as game credit for upgrades, unlocking maps, characters, levels, items, specials, and I saw Vietnamese spending money on online video games when I was living in Vietnam for 5 years, 2012-2017, and some of them make less than $200 USD/month but were still spending dozens of dollars on unlocking characters, for buying items, etc. Amazing maybe. I think about that sometimes. I love Bitcoin. I love Steemit. I hope we all continue in pushing the envelope of innovation and everything in what we can do, especially for Steemit on and off the applications, online, offline.... . Thanks for sharing, hehe. I'm Oatmeal Joey Arnold. You can call me Joey.

You got the big 4 points in here. I think another is that you can change Steem into other currencies that do other things. So there is value there. ..The danger for Steemit is only in competition and corruption. The blockchain hat is out of the bag and lots of rivals will emerge. Let's try keep Steemit clean ! , also from really poor posts getting upvoted by rubbish bots.

A currency is only valuable if you can use it in a way or another. Steem has already a big advantage over other crypto currencies since it has a whole ecosystem of websites and services linked to it. Not only are there websites and services, there are also a lot of intelligent people who can develop and imagine new ways to implement the currency.

A nice idea would be to offer a market place for digital goods (music, pictures, ebooks, courses, etc) maybe on steemit itself, where users could sell and buy from each other and just send the product by e-mail for example.

Actually, cryptocurrency was created with the purpose to serve as a medium of exchange goods and services, creating money out of the banker's hands. Unfortunately, the whole process has been misunderstood and people just use cryptocurrencies to speculate trying to make money out of it. The purpose of money is only to facilitate the exchange of goods and services nothing more than that.

I use Steem to get pubg skins xD
