So steemit is invite only for the time being, this was expected to be honest.
Here's my idea:
Add an invite system, give every user (eg. SteemPower/1000) a fixed contingent of invite links on weekly/monthly basis.
Those who are heavily invested in the platform via SP do have an incentive to not throw invites at anyone & to prevent fake accounts to pop up.
Note: this is just to pass the queue, this system should still be offered.
Hi @ash thanks for the info, I didn't know Steemit was invite only. I was about to embark on a crusade to try promote Steemit and would have had egg on my face when people couldn't log in. An invite system is a nice idea, but first we have to find out if this invite thing is temporary, might only be for a week.

not a referral system, just a invite-a-friend system without an incentive other than that. keybase.io is extremely successful with this approach for example

I am also not a fan of this Kind of stuff. I think steem can handle by far more User then know. It should be still open for everyone so we can crash reddit in the next couple months. Right know, the Team had a pretty hard time to secure the platform because of the recent Hacks .

what if some of the users with high amounts of power at the moment are the ones creating fake accounts :/
there's nothing to win for them. those accounts are worthless if you only intend to use them maliciously.
