I am glad I found out about steemit, it looks like a very interesting platform but with pros and cons. I don't want to make a post just about complains, thus I will try to keep it balanced so for each negative statement I will write also a positive one:
Positive: There is potential, I can see some people doing pretty well and it's great to be rewarded to provide good content. Reading and writing about stuff is going to definitely increase your value as a person, and steemit can potentially be used as a motivator to encourage this.
Negative: let me tell you, there is so much garbage on here and what's frustrating is that some people just make a ton of money just posting junk, this really lowers the standard for the whole platform.
Positive: There are some well thought mechanisms to prevent some abuses of the platform, this is encouraging and definitely good to see.
Negative: I came across tons of plagiarized content, some authors even copy paste entire websites on here and they seem to get away with it. I saw there are some people actively trying to keep steemit clean but I guess the amount of clean-up to do is considerable.
Positive: I found some very supportive people, with great personality and a genuine interest in helping others and make Steemit succeed. Obviously I've also seen plenty of jerks but definitely the good outweigh the bad here.
Negative: Steemit seems to reward a few people more than the others, if you are new and you create great content your work is definitely under-appreciated. What's worst is that you have to cope with seeing junk posts making hundreds of dollars while yours make next to nothing.
Positive: There are some groups of curators that try to help new members grow and give them encouraging rewards for posting good content.
Negative: The voting system has loopholes that allows automatic voting. Authors of course have great incentives to write posts that are compelling for the autovoting software and not create good content for people. If you are new and your post is already not getting much traffic, it matters little if you create good content, I found that most people won't vote for you simply because it would not be profitable for them to vote for a post that is not making any money. Post stats matter more than quality of content here.

Positive: If you are lucky and the right user votes for you, you can do pretty well relatively quickly.
Negative: Your post generates income only for 7 days. That's a fairly short period especially if you have just started. Literally you can count on one hand how many people are going to read your post (simply because you still don't have enough reputation to rank higher). It is particularly though for new users to create quality content if nobody is going to read it and the post will generate income only for 7 days. It would be great to have more long-term incentives. Quality content has long life, why let it last only 7 days?
Conclusion
I'm sure there is much more to talk about but these are the main things I noticed. I am definitely no Oscar Wilde but I wrote a few scientific articles in top scientific journals, I think what I write is pretty decent and sometime I question why am I giving away my time for so little reward. I'll be patient, in the mean time I will keep creating original content just for Steemit. I guess I will be writing just for myself until I find an audience.

I totally agree with this, I have had some complaints like this myself already. It would be cool if one could repost information from a couple months before so that it could get more interest after you become more popular. It is definatly good motivation for writing. Also, I have been wondering if you keep the rights to your work after you post it and are paid? Like idk
I was actually thinking the same thing, so much value goes to waste after 7 days, it's a bit of a shame, but on the other hand that's how social media work
Thanks for re-steeming. I read the original post and it's spot on. One thing you could do for past posts is write a new one with updated information, and link back to the original. You can also do something like a "top 10 posts from last month" and link back, or organize your posts into themes every now and again and link back. As with all original works ownership belongs to the author. Use or reproducation of original works fall under copyright guidelines:
Here is a Steemit article posted about a year ago from @drherz https://steemit.com/terms/@drherz/who-owns-the-content
And here is a site from Stanford University about copyright:

Now maybe I should write a post about this! ha!
I think the idea of showing some of the oldest posts is good, so much value goes to waste as older posts gets ignored, however for now since we don't have much content I think we should focus more on content creation. With time I think it will be worth linking to the older posts
Agreed on all points and well done on laying out the pros and cons. After I got started, I was blown away at what I was seeing regarding junk content, plagiarism, and bot upvoting. I was also inspired by the great stuff on here, but it does take time to wade through and find it. I think it's really up to us to just do good work, flag posts, support Steemians who are ethical, and submit ideas for improvements. Thank you for your honest and thoughtful post!
Thank you for taking time to read my post, it means a lot to me. I know it is hard to get started, I'm struggling and I see others struggle. For this reason I think we should support each other, if you write good original content and you feel your post is under-appreciated, please contact me on Steemit chat and send me a link. I will check that the post is not plagiarized and if it's good content I will surely vote it!
you have me is your audience :)
and i think you are right there is still a lot of work to be done here. they should add a "report" button or something like this so we can start clearing out all the junk.
i was hoping to write scientific things also! I didn't write to any journal yet haha but i was thinking this will be a fun place to share and practice... didn't get to it though...
i hope we will have a fun journey here!
i'll make sure to stay tuned for your posts!
thank you, knowing that someone is actually reading what I write motivates me to do a better job, I look forward to read some of your posts as well!! Please don't hesitate to send me a link if you were to post something new as I don't always check my feed
also since you are here, don't be shy about asking for specific topics, I would love to get suggestions about the next topics I should cover
will do :)
its 3 am here so i can think of something now haha...
but tell me you said send me a link - how can i send you something? i didn't know you can on steemit.
you can go to steemit chat, there I have the same nickname, you can search for aboutcoolscience and send me a direct message
I'm often online and surely I will reply to you
in the chat there are some channels where you can promote your posts, in my experience you will generally gain 2-3 views each time you post a link to the promotion page, nothing to get excited about
