I am close to getting to a similar conclusion.
I came to the platform exhilarated about a system that promised to let good quality content bubble to the top (both in terms of attention and in terms of reward).
What I find is that the "attention economy" here is no better than on other platforms, i.e. as an author one has to spend two thirds of the time marketing oneself, trying to game the system, grouping the whales etc. etc.
It is quite disappointing - especially since a few relatively small tweaks as have been discussed in various threads would probably be sufficient to change the situation.
It does show that Steem(it) has been created and is dominated, by people with interest and talent in fields of technology and economics but not so much in a creative field.
