Image plagiarism was a concern for me; I found through google search you can use the advanced search, which gives a drop-down option to filter Usage Rights, however, I have so many images saved in my folders, there may be a couple that were not filtered... I will definitely check out Pixabay! As a newby all of this information is helpful, so, thanks! :)

That's a good tip. Just good to double check where the image came from I guess. But I'm glad I was able to share Pixabay with you. I've used them for a long time now.. ever since I got called out for plagiarism (and an author) tried to extort money out of my years ago lol. He didn't get my money but he definitely taught me a valuable lesson.

You can also check out @creative-commons which has images you can use on condition that you attribute them to the respective artists. It probably would not be a bad idea to give them an upvote, for their efforts .

Hey thank you @movievigilante I will check them out too! Awesome info!

You're welcome!

My images are mostly my own or public domain from Wikipedia.

wow steemit shirt? nice, am quiet new on the platform joined last week, its always a good practice to help people not to make mistakes and error, i also suggest that every interested newbie watch this video to learn.
i am resteeming this right away!

Thanks @steamingsteem, I appreciate it. And yeah, one thing about Steemit is that there's quite a learning curve. But if you take the time to learn the ropes it will pay off big in the long run and help you avoid any mistakes. Glad to see you digging into the information right away. :)

Thank you this is very helpful. I am looking or mentorship for a community I am trying to grow #MinnowMilitia so content creators can reach out to targeted audiences and help each other out with the difficulties of starting out on the steem block chain. The other alternatives are paying for upvotes or upvote for upvote. Upvotes should be earned and we just want to Create a space where we can connect with others like us. If you could give a mention to help us grow that would be great. I would also like to link you to tutorials so our future members can find answers easily. Thank you @brandonfrye.

That’s an excellent idea for a community. I will look into this more but I already like the sound of it and what you’re trying to accomplish. Will check you out. 👍🏻

Thank you the information you put out will be invaluable. Just trying to get new comers behind the cause is a grind in itself.

Great stuff man as always. I really think the idea that @aggroed brought up about the downvote rather than flag option would be huge. I didn't even notice that Dtube thing until you brought it up. And I wonder how many people have been flagged because people just didn't agree with it. Needs a change I think and that's a pretty good suggestion!

I agree, I hope he can push that idea along and maybe get some other people on board with it. I've actually seen several people get flagged on dtube because people just didn't understand what they were doing. At least, I assume they didn't know what affect that has on these people's videos. It's just too innocent looking when it's just thumbs down icon.

Great points for newbies and infact, also for those who have been Steeming for a while... We can not progress if we complain and whimper seeing others succeed. We can progress by executing ideas, taking inspiration and keeping thoughts original!

This post is very helpful to me...great..thanks you

Is a comment reward a method of begging for up-votes & comments? Grey area?

Great question! And no, I'm not begging for anything. Just rewarding people who leave me valuable feedback on my posts if they actually like my posts. As you'll notice, I always say, "If you like my post you can upvote and comment on it and have a chance to win tomorrow's reward". I don't want anybody to upvote my posts if they don't actually like it.

Thanks for the clarification. I see that a lot on YouTube so that kind of made me think of intentions here.

I have access to white label content subscription for computer repair business owners. I use that content on my blog, but others do as well. I am not overly concerned with google slap, but wondering what the view is of white label content here on Steemit is.

sometimes i did some of the things that in this video. but anyway sometimes i saw authors that always did these things and they're successful :D

True, I've seen it all myself. And everything here is merely a suggestion. But you definitely don't want to plagiarize or spam. That's for sure. :)

you're right exactly, for a newbie like me, knows that is important. it was a very nice video, thanks for your work..

Thank you, I appreciate it. And I'm glad it helped.

Makes sense so I will resteem. Its also entertaining with a purpose. Which should be the goal of all Good Steemit content. Down with the Cut & Paste Brigade;D~

Thanks @franks, I appreciate that. And yeah, out with the nonsense lol. :)

As a new steemian I found your video very useful. Although to me much of it falls within the realm of common sense. I found the tagging part of your video helpful because I did not understand that. Thank you very much for doing this brandonfrye you have another follower.

Yeah, you're totally right. Most of this stuff really should be common sense. Unfortunately, many people come to Steemit thinking that everything goes and that the normal "rules" don't apply. And while technically there are no rules, the community works hard to hold everybody accountable. We'll always have bad apples out there but for those that want to enjoy the platform for the long-term, it's best to follow some of these guidelines. Thanks for the feedback and the follow, I really appreciate it.

I think I am going to like it here. I always try to think about being free to do anything does not necessarily mean a person would be free from the consequences of their choices. Thank you so much for the reply I was not expecting one so this was quite a pleasant surprise for me!

One thing that I think that should be pointed out is the permanence of posts linked to a blockchain. What you post is forever linked to your username.

True, no take backs here lol. While you can post anonymously (using an alias), what you do post stays on record forever. Great point!

Understanding that this platform is a social network, we must be able to contribute with quality material, what is quality? there are thousands of topics to contribute and with contribution I mean not only echo what we hear or we learn, we can talk about the same topic but with our personal opinion.

In the course of the projects or new ideas, the main impulse is the ideas emitted from the community, if we only echo copying and pasting information, we will never end up with anything more than repeating what someone else said, without a personal contribution. .

However cute or spectacular we may find an opinion or a publication we can not just copy and paste, all ideas always need to be shredded and point out what seems right and in the same way point out what we do not like, we all have different scenarios in our lives and those small differences make change much or little the ideas of someone else.

My opinion of SPAM, the truth I have nothing favorable to say, but I do not understand why this behavior, when I usually comment on a video or a publication, I always try to leave all my impressions, even if it is tedious to read all my comment , I can not just answer with (good video, good publication or that well follow me) for me is like "give the plane" hahaha as we say in Mexico, asking to follow me or vote for my publications I leave it to everyone and to I put in them, the fact of following someone or being followed by someone should not be based on conditions but the interest of my material and yours.

Greetings from Mexico.

What a great comment! I surely appreciate you taking the time to leave valuable feedback like this. That goes a long way here on Steemit. So thank you! :)

Integrity helps the system and everyone on it, great advice! Just checked out Pixabay (awesome).

I completely agree, @cryptopluschat. And I'm glad you were able to learn about Pixabay here. :)

So. I get to start at the top of the comment heap without upvoting my own comment!

That's a truly great list, and it's in my best interest to follow it.

I actually met Cheetah on my second post. I used to write for a daily MC page on a 'one use' license. He got sole use of my content for one use, but I retain full ownership and rights. I 'repurposed' (with some changes, but not much) my post and Cheetah found where it was originally posted. I was embarrassed. I'll reuse some of those (they represent a lot of research about cool MCs) but I'll do a major rewrite before I do.

Thanks for another great video and tutorial. I really do appreciate them.

Hey @bigtom13, thanks as always for your comments! That's interesting to hear you've already had a run in with Cheetah. Even some big YouTube channels that are coming to Steemit/Dtube are learning very quick about Cheetah. Of course, it's not always a bad thing but at least with Cheetah you're able to prove your ownership.

I had Cheetah pay a visit on one of my posts too, after I copied an article I wrote on Blogspot and posted it on Steemit. It's nothing to worry about, Readers will see that the link in the comment leads to my own work.

That's what copyrights are for. As the author, I have the right to copy and post my work anywhere I please. That is my right granted by the laws of copyright. A lot of people think that copyright was created only to prevent others from copying one's work. That is only one of the reasons. The other is to allow creators to make as many copies of their work as they see fit.

That's something any creator should take advantage of.

I saw your post...
I watched the video...
Now, I have 6 other interesting tabs with your videos opened :D

Going to watch them all right now!
Thanks @brandonfrye

Lol, I'm glad you have found my videos useful. I haven't made this well known yet, but I'm in the process of categorizing my videos on a website where people can find exactly what they're looking for when it comes to Steemit help and how-tos. Anyways, thanks for the feedback! :)

That would be great. Also you could link 2 or 3 related videos at the end of your posts :)

Sure, thanks for the idea.

DEFINITELY WILL NOT BE DOING SOME OF THESE THING LOL GREAT ADVICE WOULD OF NEVER FOUND THIS VIDEO OTHERWISE :)

Thanks @asapadmiral, glad these tips of things NOT to do has helped. :)

@brandonfrye Purdue Owl is a good source to understand plagiarism and how to avoid it. Also, citation machine is a great way to cite your sources.

Awesome tips, thanks @jr11!

Ok. So I have some problems to reference the items since the URL's are too long but how do you make it smaller. I see people having two words saying link here, how do you get that??

Great question. This article is a bit lengthy but explains how to use the Steemit markdown or the editor to accomplish this.

Thank you for that comprehensive list of things that you shouldn't do on steemit. I agree with all of the mentioned points except for one: the downvoting / flagging. As you pointed out, there is a little bit of a flaw with the steemit's flagging system to begin with. But if you just disagree with the content or the opinion that is put forward in that content, what's the problem of just sticking to the comment section and voice your criticism / differing opinion there. I think it is unfair to take away from a person's reward and reputation just because you disagree, when there are other people who enjoy that content. In that instance wouldn't it be better to comment and then upvote your own comment? This way everyone wins.

I can agree with that. It’s much more productive to leave a comment rather than flagging.

Great advice I was wondering why I received 0.0001 steem from some people lol now I know

Lol yeah it’s the most polite form of spam I’ve ever seen.

Yes they should send more lol

I have actually started leaving a source to the images i make stupid memes on Dmania to so i hope thats fine. I even joined the Steem Cleaners and reported quite a few viewers who just spam "wow nice post" over and over again.

That's interesting because I was actually wondering today what category memes fall under (Creative Commons?) since they're all over the Internet and are used all over the place without citing. But it sounds like you're playing it safe which is smart.

I found Dmania and i kinda like the site. I plan to only post memes i have actually made and not repost everything i see on reddit like some people are doing. Many people think this is "shitposting" but i think memes are an important part of the side just like on reddit. You get long good informative posts and some stupid stuff you can just laugh for a bit at.

Friendly FYI: I noticed you used "copywritten" when referring to content that is protected, which is a common mistake people make. It might originate from believing that an author's work is written down on paper, therefore it is copywritten.

However, the correct term is "copyrighted". For example, as a graphic designer, my designs are automatically copyrighted the moment they are created. This means that only I have the right to copy them, which is where the word originates.

This applies to any creative work, whether it be writing, visual art or music.

I hope you don't mind me righting this wrong...

...or is that writing rongs?

Lol no I don’t mind at all. I actually appreciate that. Thanks for the clarification. :)

#8 - yes!!! People kill me with silly mistakes -- when I'm reading content I want it to be actually readable! Can't tell you how many times I've been interested enough to click on a post but couldn't read through it because of the blatant mistakes so I just left without engaging. I hope Steemians get better at this as time goes along.

Me too, @millennia. I think it's so important! I used to live with an English major and I took full advantage of having her around. I'm still not perfect as far as my grammar goes but I do try my best. Some people seem to not try at all which is too bad. It's definitely worth taking that extra time to re-read and edit your posts before pushing that Post button. Thanks for your comment... I do appreciate it! :)

Yes, and no one is perfect, I too make mistakes - it is easy to overlook little things, especially on longs posts. I don't want people to think I'm a grammar-Nazi, but some of these posts look like the author didn't read what they typed out at all. Just a few minutes is all it takes! Keep up the good work @brandonfrye!

@brandonfrye Thanks for the not-to-do tips! Question for dtube, I noticed there isn't a upvote slider and you automatically vote at 100% power. Is there a way to get the slider to appear or is this just not a function within dtube at the moment?

You mentioned that upvoting your own comment is not best practice. I upvote a lot of my comments since I am new and I'm trying to get as much exposure as possible. Is this really frowned upon on Steemit?

Great question @dirkboy41. Yes, actually if you log into your d.tube account and click the gear icon (settings) it will allow you to change your default voting power. That's the only way I know to change it. And you'll have to change that each time you want to change the percentage for now. I'll post a screenshot below of what I mean...

Screen Shot 2018-01-24 at 6.08.38 PM.png

a very interesting and informative video as always, i do find your content extremely helpful :)

Thank you @xloubechsx, I appreciate the love! :)

this is good, with the importance of reputation you wouldn't want to get in one of these pitfalls

Absolutely, I think reputation is so important here on Steemit. Probably more-so than most platforms because there's an actual integer on your profile that states your Steem Blockchain Reputation. So it really means something to people who are taking a look at your profile and deciding whether they would like to follow you or not. Thanks for the comment @funbobby51, I appreciate it!

Thanks! I'm new here and the plagiarism issue really bothers me. All the points you made were excellent. Though I don't think I would mind too much if I had .001 SBD for every piece of spam I'd ever gotten ;-)

I'll check out some of your older stuff and look forward to more from you.

Lol, right!? It's the most polite form of spam I've ever seen. :)

Cant we google search the image and download it and edit it and post it ?
Because i am doing exactly like this. I download the image and edit it . Suppose i had written article about iphone x and i downloaded the X's image and i added text .newcanvas_1516811477649.jpg

I have done like this. Can't i do ? I am confused 🤔🤔

And thank you for sharing this. I am beginner. I has been 6 days i account has been approved. Plz make my confusion clear.

I'm going to let someone else chime in here to see what opinions come up. But I would still use Pixabay and search for an iPhone X image. That way you know you're safe. You could also take a picture of your own iPhone X if you have one handy. But my thoughts are that if you're taking the image directly from the Apple website they most likely wouldn't have a problem with this if your article is speaking positively about iPhone or Apple. But again, just to be safe I would use one of the images on Pixabay. I'd be interested to hear what others say.

this is excellent Brandon, thanks

Thanks guys, I appreciate it! :)

Can You Do A Post On What TO Do On Steemit?

Lol I’ve done a bunch of those which is why someone suggested this post. I’ll continue to share things to help people grow their channels on Steemit though. That’s my main goal.

Pixabay is very useful, and I had never heard of it. Thanks for sharing that!

Glad to help! :)

Great advice here. Other than pixabay, another great site is pexels.com, like to search both for the perfect image

I had forgotten about that site. Thanks for the great tip!

Thanks for he info. New here want to get off and running on the right foot. Big help

Thanks @knowthycrypto, I appreciate the feedback and I’m glad this was helpful. :)

I'm still new to the platform so this video is very helpful, especially the information about duplication of content and the possibility it could be flagged. As time goes on, I plan on posting some of the articles from our website to Steemit. All content is ours and can be verified, but it is good to know what action should be taken in the event it get flagged by SteemCleaners.

Thank you for the info!

sat through the entire video ..and took solid notes as a noobie :)
You did mention you like to keep upto-date with crypto news .. well i cover the altcoinbuzz news section in the form of an article ..with all the source links mentioned in the video
Cheers :))

Pixabay is a decent site for images, but also very limited. Shopify also has a good selection of royalty free images that people can use: https://burst.shopify.com/free-images
For those who want more professional looking images try Fotolia. The platform is owned by Adobe, and it sells a huge selection of high quality photos for fairly cheap prices: https://us.fotolia.com/

As for plagiarism, this seems to be a big issue on YouTube as well. People often steal videos and re-upload them to their own channels and then dump ads on them. Its the whole reason Google keeps having to change the rules regarding monetization, because a few bad actors are stealing content left and right.

One of the things people can do to protect their videos is make use of a logo to include in each video production. I do this for the majority of my gaming videos, and include the logos for my gaming brand in my videos here on Steemit. This way if someone is stealing your content, others will know because of the logo, and someone will always tip you off.

Great video! I look forward to more like this that I can share with my crypto discord channel. The easy to understand content makes it easier to get people to get it and join.

thanks for the informative video. did not know about the free picture site nor that people go out of their way with plagiarism. people should try to be unique and not steal other peoples content. ill have to give you a follow brandon and thanks for this great video

I've only been on Steemit for a few weeks and I've actually noticed more than one person mislabeling their posts so that they can get into the "introduce yourself" section.

So, you're absolutely right about the mislabeling of tags.

Also, when you're on the receiving end of people plagiarising your work, it doesn't feel good at all. It not nice when you put hours of work into writing blog posts or creating a video and then Swiper comes over and passes your stuff off as their own.

So, I'm glad that this platform took the steps to do something about that.

(And, note to self before I forget: I must purchase some of that Steemit merch!)

Great information, thanks for taking the time.
As a newbie this helps a lot. I did notice on a video I saw from someone else they said it was ok and normal to upvote yourself when posting something. Is it written somewhere that we should or shouldn't upvote ourselves? Just curious. Keep up the good quality work.
MM

Google Photos are plagiarism!!!! Shit!! hahahahahha I will bookmark pixabay now!

Thanks for the pixa bay link,
Brandon , I've been getting invites to group account that provide help on your posts by giving you access to there influence on the platform.
There are so many options on Steemit , like the make a dolphin mentor program, contests galore, if you do x y and z you get this or that or sign up and get so much SBD If... vote for vote etc.. its kind of mind boggling, at some point can you share your experiences on how to sort out all these options, are they good to look into? does joining a Steemit colectives help you rise?
Good reminder on the decentralized, non rule, rules;)
Lynn

Thanks for helping out the community. With everything being so new it is super important that everyone is careful to protect themselves and take the time to actually learn about how to best use this tool!

I am planning on starting to post on here about Neuroscience related content. Please let me know if anyone would be interested in educational videos and articles on here!
