Having been on the road for the last few weeks (and the next few weeks!) my time is limited, and I have had little time to spend on Steemit. I have been struggling with writing a couple of blogs a week, and it has got me thinking more about curation strategies and the best way to spend my limited time here over summer. Today I thought I would have a refresh on curation and share some of my own ideas.
What is curation?
Lets just start off with a quick reminder of what curation is. Curation is essentially upvoting content that you enjoy and think deserves to be rewarded. In general up to 25% of the rewards will be shared amongst the curators and the remaining 75% of the payout will go to the author. According to the STEEM faq:
The more Steem Power you have in your account, the more your votes will be worth, and the more potential curation rewards you can earn!
Voting Power
Over my first few months on Steemit I spent a fair bit of time on here and always seemed to run my voting power pretty low - one thing that is advised against! With less time I find myself running into this problem abit less - I generally check in with Steemit in the morning and sometimes in the evening. My voting power has been sitting over 80% most of the time, and I try not let it get above 90%.
My advice for maximum curation rewards would be:
- Never let your voting power dip below 80%
- Never let your voting power remain at 100%
In esscence, the higher your voting power the higher your curation rewards will be. So it is in your interest to use your upvotes wisely (You also have the option of giving a % upvote using busy.org or when your Steem power reaches 500)
Resteeming
Up until recently I have barely resteemed any posts, but since being on holiday it is something I have been experimenting with. In the past I thought that if I resteem then people will be less likely to see my latest blog, althought I am unsure how accurate that is? The blogs I have started to resteem are relevant to my audience (I hope!?), and it is nice to see the post value increasing, knowing that this will be increasing your 'slice of the pie'.
Can curation be 'gamed'?
Because of the ope nature of Steemit in regards to upvote bots (all paid votes can be tracked on steembottracker), I have started to wonder whether it is possible to 'game' the system for maximum rewards. If you can see when someone is going to buy a big upvote, then couldn't you jsut upvote the content just before the bot does and you would have 'curated' some highly 'valuable' post?
Although this is something that I don't believe is healthy for Steem it is something that I would be interested in testing out in the future and seeing how much of a difference it would make. That might be an 'experiment' for the future!
What is your curation strategy? I would love comments and feedback as always!
Hope your enjoying your travels dude!
How do you find out that your voting power is at 80% or 90% etc? I can’t seem to find my voting power. I do need to get more steem so my votes are worth more, but maybe I am upvoting too much.
With a good amount of steem you could easily make a decent basic income! I wonder if one was to invest in buying lots of steem, then using it to curate and have a constant income. I wonder the profit margins... could be interesting to find out
Yeah mate we are in Germany at the moment!
For your voting power check out steemd/@yourusername
I had a nosy at your wallet and see you have 35 steem dollars - if you want your upvote to be worth more my suggestion would be to power some of this up to steem power 😆😆
Ah sweet dude, must be awesome! I hear the weather is great at the moment in Europe, infact, boiling! Good to hear your having a good time 👍
Ah ok nice! I didn’t know that I could power up my sbd into steem power! Thanks :)
Your balance is below $0.3. Your account is running low and should be replenished. You have roughly 10 more @dustsweeper votes. Check out the Dustsweeper FAQ here: https://steemit.com/dustsweeper/@dustsweeper/dustsweeper-faq
Well if you really want to uptimize the curating part...you make sure you curate a post that has super potential within the 30mins at 100%..if you resteem it then aftewards and the post will make hundreds of $$ then your curated voted weighs heavy and you can have big awards on it..
but this is a tactical game and as you say that you dont have a lot of time, quite difficult maybe ;)
Yeah i generally do the same but don't worry about when i upvote to much. Maybe in the future i will when i have more time
I haven’t really looked at optimizing my curation yet as I really want to focus on supporting the content I like. After the #minnowuprising initiative is over I will reviews this strategy as I have been noticing that supporting smaller users and posts (us minnows) has really not made an impact on the amount of curation I am getting. I continue to engaged with larger creators with similar results as well; I still get an upvote for good comments whether I upvote or not. I have enjoyed the process so far.
Its a catch 22 for me - i want to support minnows and help newer accounts out but often they dont stay and also curation rewards will in general be less
My VP is so low I don't worry about keeping it near 100 so I give out as many upvotes as possible as people like upvotes even if it comes from someone who's vote is worth next to nil.
There are already some gaming the system. I noticed that with use of specific bots an immediate upvote or two will hit your post of individuals trying to max their curation rewards.
For the time being I have 0 strategy for curation rewards. Once I gain some more SP I will be more cautious to not let my VP sink so low ( I was at 8 % not that long ago ).
Yeah thata true - I found in the past when i would upvote alot more and have lower vp that i would get more followers - aa you said people like upvotes no matter the value!
8% wow that is low!

Be sure to leave at least 50SP undelegated on your account.
Yes, there are some people doing this and it seems to be highly competitive over who has the best algorithm in their beat-the-autovoter autovoter.
A different way to maximize is to focus on voting dTube posts, as dTube uses beneficiary rewards to operate a second curation system on top of the normal one that brings total curation rewards to about 40% of the post rewards.
On a different topic I'd like to draw your attention to https://steemit.com/@tcpolymath/apply-here-for-dolphin-support-0-300-sp-accounts which is a support project I run. I'd be interested in seeing an application from you.
I tried gaming curation for a while way back. It never has done anything for me, but I had basically just the delegated 15 SP back then. May be different when you have more.
If you want to maximise curation, you have to find someone who posts regularly and get's decent rewards for as little upvotes as possible, ideally by people who are not following him via steem auto or similar services. If you do and give that person an automated upvote between the 15. and the 30. minute of his post, you can usually reap a decent curation reward.
Even then, this curation reward is usually not big enough than the benefit of bonding with someone by commenting and upvoting his content and making a potencial follower out of him.
