I am quickly approaching the 4k follower mark here on Steemit and wanted to share my thoughts on how to grow your followership in a way that attracts people who will be engaged members of your community.
In this vlog, I share some of the myths around growing your audience on Steemit and what my approach has looked like.

Great advices here, Lea! You're spot on with everything you said. Cause basically it's not about quantity but about quality. You notice that on a daily basis: the more committed and engaged followers you have, the more fun it gets to interact on the platform. It's all about getting and staying connected.
That's also why I love the term #internetofvalue so much to describe decentralized applications such as steemit.com.

Just love your stuff. This is very true, I think that once you get to a certain level of followers with a good rank above 60 you will get more of the "hopefuls" or spammers following you. I do think you'll gain the high quality ones also along the way. I look in the trending pages to try and sift through to the best content creators. Ultimately, the best bloggers will carry Steemit to new heights. They will have a vested interest to do so. I also flag obvious spam. I realized it's better for the everyone involved. That requires a level of patience. I haven't seen a whole lot of trending articles that aren't bot assisted. I mean, to consistently have X likes within 10 minutes on a regular, never any comments...
I actually went through the list of people following me, and was shocked to see that a good portion of them were just bots. Which makes it somewhat depressing when I write something, that just disappears like dust in the wind.
I also agree with flagging spam, most of them aren't even creative.
It seems many join with high hopes, but in a system that seems built to game, looks like an uphill battle.
@bmanmcfly - Your right that it's pretty rare to see a post on the trending page that isn't there because of bots. It didn't always used to be that way around here - but that is the current state of affairs. Usually if you search within tags you are interested in ... you can find some great, quality content at the top.

I'm with you on the flagging front. I don't hesitate to flag spammy or ridiculous comments - but I do that at a minimum. For me, I'd rather save my voting power to upvote stuff that I think is awesome.

Connecting with others via comments is key along with continuing to add value by posting quality content on a consistent basis. Video is extremely powerful and more Steemians need to take advantage of the awesome apps we have like DTube and DLive to share their stories and ideas.

I think that's a great idea! I'm really glad you found this video helpful! The number of followers doesn't really matter if you aren't getting much engagement yet. Spending a huge chunk of your time reaching out and engaging with others is such a smart idea... especially in the beginning. <3
Great advice! This is a lesson that many people don't learn for a long time. The worst mistake that people make is trying to do sub for sub. That is a great way to keep your channel from growing in a meaningful way.

Sidenote. Its kind of frustrating to put a lot of effort and time and not get much notice back. A lot of bots around.
People follow because of money and high paying posts, not quality.

Hi @psyceratopsb. I totally get how frustrating it can be to keep plugging away without much progress. This is where I think spending a lot of time reaching out to others and building relationships can be a really smart way to approach things. Sometimes experimenting with changing things up can help too. Maybe you try using different tags, or posting at different times of day. I'm not sure if that would help ... but that could be another thing you play around with.
Good point. I think it's good to keep in mind that the platform is still growing and also there are some people who mainly look for good content. Afterall, the alternative social media sites don't pay anything ever. People have been encouraged to participate without the money factor at the forefront, too, I've seen. Is that what you've seen? I think unless you have tens of thousands of Steem that doing money focused things could be a better use of time elsewhere, but sometimes on Steemit you get the occasional $60 upvote etc if you're doing good content, but whales don't follow around minnows or anything obviously right? Anyways, this was me agreeing with you lolz

Your right , nothing worse then being followed by people "ghosts" . I think that I should simply make this thousands of photos and don't care that much about upvotes . Making this more for myself , comments are important , good idea to write and comment stuff you like . Will try to make it more often

First of all, as someone who apparently has some knowledge regarding this subject: Why do people like to make videos of themselves in their cars?
You and I seem to have the same train of thought when it comes to forging connections in this community. In fact, just yesterday I decided to give myself a small challenge. Nothing fancy, I just went and wanted to create 100 quality comments/replies to people in one fell swoop.
You can read up on that here, if you want.
I wasn't rushing doing it, it took about 3-4 hours to complete the challenge from start to finish. Within the same time frame, I usually can write 1-2 posts, depending on how indepth and lengthy it becomes.
Using that same time to actively engage with posters of all kinds of different schools of expertise was exciting to say the least. I managed to increase my follower count by a bit, whether these will be quality followers remains to be seen. I also got quite a few upvotes in the process and also found a lot of content that I actually enjoyed.
I am a fast reader, so that definitively helped. Overall, I think that this challenge is a good way to bring people back into actively making connections and creating actual relationships between the poster and the follower.
This is just my third week on Steemit and I am creeping up to 300 followers. By the time I have been around here for as long as you have, I hope that I will be able to reach the same milestone as you did. Perhaps an even greater one.

Personally I only follow people who post content that Im interested in. When I started on Steemit I undervalued the power of commenting, but as soon as I followed some advices, just like yours, with the right way to "succeed" in the platform, my follower base started growing consistently.
I just found this video through a re-steem from one person that I follow, and that's why I follow the right people, I know every post and re-steem they make, it will be appealing to me, and its worth my time to check out the post.
