Hi Friends!
Today I'm talking about the age old question of Steemit Earnings. We all understand what it's like to pour our blood, sweat and tears into a post - only to have it make $.07 cents - while someone posting a blurry picture of their dog makes $100.
How and why does that happen??
A new (and totally awesome) user to the Steem blockchain @nomadgirl left a comment on one of my posts the other day saying she is new here and is still trying to figure out why some posts earn more than others. Instead of writing out all my thoughts into a long comment that only one person will see - I decided to make an entire video talking about this so maybe a few more people will find it helpful.
In this video I bust a couple common myths and give my top three takeaways on this topic.
Also - I decided to get outdoors and go for a walk while filming! You guys will have to let me know if you like this style of video. Part of why I wanted to try this out is that:
I was in the mood to go for a walk. I had a HUGE dinner last night and just felt like getting out and moving this morning.
I made a video Testing out a $10 Mic yesterday, and a few people commented that they wanted to see me testing the mic outdoors with it actually clipped to my shirt (facepalm for not doing that in the first place) So here ya guys go!

I totally agree with ya. Great advice to newcomers, and something that we all have to remind ourselves from time to time.
I think it's funny too how aggroed made that analogy about singing to an empty auditorium. It paints the perfect picture, and I've had very similar conversations about how artists putting a ton of money and energy into their debut album is a bit of a waste. No one is here to listen yet. Do something short, like an EP or a couple singles, build those relationships, network, and when people are actually paying attention, then do something bigger.
It all revolves around the same universal concept, being that networking and community are both an essential part of moving forward in a social environment such as Steemit (or music). You have to pay your dues and show any level of respect and commitment to the community that you hope to see interaction from, before it will be reciprocated.
Wow, this was so perfectly put @harrisonmir. I especially liked your last comment about showing respect and commitment to a community before you can expect anything from it. You could honestly do an entire post just talking about that! I think that piece of things gets lost on a lot of people (whether it is music or Steemit) and they show up expecting to be taken care of right away.

Amazingly said. I had the same idea before 9 months, create content and go. But you said it right its like singing to an empty auditorium. First, we have to fill the auditorium by engaging to the community and if we sing well well that will take us in another level. I find out its more 70 percent to get engaged with the community and leave a positive comment or positive critic so that they can find a way as well and these people didn't forget me. Its a community after all. There are curie, ocd-resteem, dtube and tons of people who are searching for great content creator but unfortunately some amazing writer think that they just write a post and it will talk for itself. But why should someone give someone an upvote if she doesnt engage with the community and not comment on people's post or give an upvote. Its like telling hey my blog is exceptional, I deserve an upvote. Noone deserves an upvote because she or writes well. The person who wants to enage with other people and came here to be a part of it deserves it :)
I'm so glad this video resonated with you! I totally felt this way when I started too. I thought it was all about making the best content and would get confused when I saw stuff on trending that looked like it didn't take much effort. A 70/30 ratio when you are starting out sounds like an awesome plan. :)

I agree with you. I always look to see that an author engages with their commenters when first deciding whether to follow and upvote them. It's a social writing platform, not just a bunch of personal blogs. The community element to me is the greatest draw of the platform.
Really fun to watch you walk around Bellingham, I grew up there and I miss it a ton. I’ll be honest, I was looking behind you a lot more than I was looking at your face/crooked sunglasses, trying to recognize familiar places x) Good commentary, persistence is key here on Steem, and rewards in no way denote interesting content. Building community and interacting is a much more reliable way to earn Steem than just posting into the void.

whaaaa your from Bellingham!! That's so freaking cool! If you couldn't tell - I was just walking a few blocks around downtown. I live down there and I love it. So easy to walk out my front door and either head down Boulevard Park or downtown.

Nice topic! I will have to check out steepshot as well, I have seen it just didn't use it yet. I think it is funny at times why this post vs. that post works but maybe it's just luck sometimes like when you get a Gold Foil Steem Monsters card, lol!!! :-)
hahah totally! Yeah sometimes it's just timing. Maybe you happen to post something when tons of people are busy and it falls to the way side before anyone sees it. It's so hard to know for sure sometimes!

Great video @coruscate. :) It is very good advice. I agree it can be very frustrating when you put a ton of time into something and don't get many votes. Building relationships is key. Commenting on other posts that interest, you, etc. Being active in Discord, it all goes a long way, once I started doing those things I saw my blog grow so much more. I have been here on Steemit since the end of January, but really it didn't start growing until just a few months ago. Good times!

Hi @nitishgoyalstar! Steemit earnings are a direct reflection of your reputation score. Every time you earn a penny on the blockchain - it gives you a tiny fraction more reputation. Once you reach the next point - you will see your rep number change.
Each point you earn get's doubly as hard as the last. For example - jumping from 25-26 won't take much earning, but then getting from 26 to 27 will be a little harder... and so on.

As a complete novice to this platform I found this video very helpful and motivating. This really is a community first type of platform which is rather unique I think.

Great points. I'm really glad that I spent my first month commenting on posts of others way more than posting my own articles. I also found people in my topic interest tags who were doing well and could easily see what they were doing that I could emulate. And by commenting on the posts of those same people, I was able to build relationships with them, that helped me start getting traction pretty quickly. That and entering contests.
I'm looking to help a group of poor youths get started on here well soon and am really appreciating posts like this that help clarify exactly what are the factors of success. Thanks for this.

Community is everything, in Steemit, and apparently the real world too, as absolutely noone in your community crashed into the crazy lady talking to herself or even gave her a funny look. Go Bellingham! :)
Another reason people may not notice is the use of bid bots. People bid for votes to boost a post to the trending, so new people may see that it only takes a blurry photo of their dog to get into the trending.
Just go to heimindanger's tool and see that all top 25 trending posts are influenced by bid bots.
