If you succeed in deceiving somebody, it doesn’t mean that he is a fool. It just means that he trusts you more than you deserve. (Charles Bukowski, american writer)
Steemit is built on the trust: we trust witnesses to sign our transactions, and they trust us to produce quality content; we trust Steemit to store our original works, articles, photos, and he gives us money and trusts to distribute them among those users who increase the value of the entire system. "Money from the trust", remember?
This is how it was conceived in an ideal model. But what if someone abuses this trust? How would you react to such people in real life?
In this article, I want to tell you how to game the system and grab a few quick bucks how to find all sorts of offenders here and how to avoid their mistakes.
There are several types of abuse at Steemit:
- spam
- plagiarism
- tag abuse
- scam
- post/comment-farm
And if there is a lot of the first / second / third here, then I had to dig a little to find the latter, to show you living examples. So, get acquainted:
SPAMERS
They are everyvhere
They are the people who litter with their messages ubiquitously and leave you something you did not ask for. All these "good posts", "nice pictures", "follow me", "look at my blog" and other comments that do not carry semantic load and are left under your post only for self-promotion.
Most often they do not even vote for your post, they just use it as a place where they can yell "here I am! Look at me!" The most productive spammers like this guy, manage to leave a few such messages per minute. That's the speed of copy-paste!
Avoid spamming, nobody likes spammers./
PLAGIARISTS
They take someone else's work, text, article (or part of it), a photo and post it in their blog on Stmit without mentioning the author or referring to the original source, which allows users to think that this is their work.
Sometimes they indicate in their post that this is information from Google. In fact, every picture or article has a legitimate author (primary source). Believe me, this is not Google. And not all of the information / photo found on the Internet can be copied without its owner's permition.
I found it just yesterday. Here is a post at Steemit
and here is original post, found with using Google-search. Its address can be seen in the black address bar.
The use of other people's pictures for your posts is not prohibited if they have a "free" license. If you are not familiar with the types of licenses, you can use resources such as Pixabay.com for pictures or Giphy.com for gifs, everything is free there. However even in this case your readers have the right to know where your work ends and the work of another person begins.
TAG ABUSERS
Some tags on Steemit are more popular than others. Posts with such tags are more often viewed or they provide the author with additional votes, like #busy, #Dmania or #utopian-io. And that's why some authors use them under their posts, although in fact they have nothing to do with these tags.
Such actions add a confusion and make it difficult to sort posts by tags that are of interest to a particular user. At the same time, they do not give any financial result for the offender, because it's not enough just to leave the Utopian-io tag under your post for getting $100 reward. In addition, it is still necessary to do some work.
Also often is abused #introduceyourself tag. But believe me, the steak recipe published under this tag is unlikely to add to you many votes and folovers.
The cheaters in these three categories are mostly innocuous and inexperienced beginners. And they can be forgiven, because we have no official rules here, and they do not know what is welcomed by the community, and what can be punished. Who didn't make mistakes while being young? As newcomers, they just want to "shine a little" and attract the audience to their posts. Sometimes it's enough just to give them friendly advice - and they follow it and change their behavior.
Next, I will tell you about "heavy artillery" from more experienced users
SCAMERS
Users who use Steemit-chat to promote their posts, probably already met with such scammers. For the newcomers it will be a warning.
You can receive a Private message in the chat from a user with a high reputation at Steemit with an interesting and profitable offer: to exchange several SBD for $10-20 dollar upvote from the whale.
POST/COMMENT FARMERS
Post/comment farm are the most difficult to detect and it cause the greatest harm to the platform in both short and long-term perspective. These are complex schemes created by experienced users with a relatively large Voting Power. Based mostly on spam / plagiarism, they are backed by massive voting (including self-voting) to maximize profits.
Below is a typical piece of spam-based post-farm. For those who do not know Russian, I will explain - it's just a random set of words that received 240 votes at 1 viewing (mine).
How did he do it? I bet he has another 239 accounts that vote after the 1st one, and uses Streemian or another application to create a voting trail.
And this is a post-farm based on plagiarism. Who voted for him?
Oh, we have many paid "curators" here!/О, у нас здесь много платных "кураторов"!
They are ready to support any shit.
Here is an example of comment-farm. This guy just killed me with his impudence and straightforwardness. It was a head-shot!
But these were all just florets. Ready to see the game of our local high league?
When you have money and power, you do not need readers, there will be enough to create another few accounts that will make posts or comments under your votes, and then return all created rewards to "daddy". In our example, this is done through a transit account. You can post plagiarism even with water marks
...or have a conversation with yourself /...
...and then return all created rewards to "daddy" through the transit account/...
Steemit Police
Everything in the world tends to balance, and since there are violators, that is, those who catch and punish them. In addition to @spaminator fighting a spam, there are @cheetah and @steecleaners - two projects of one creator, each of them is living with its own life and has its own purpose. Cheetah is automated and configured to search for similar content on the Internet. He does not punish, but simply notifies you and your readers that he has noticed plagiarism and gives you a chance to change your behavior.
The Steemcleaners work more decisively, they burn the rewards received by fraud, and return them back to our common reward pool.
And although some of their actions are automated, it is worth noting that the Steemcleaners are real people, Patrice and her team, as well as all who send them for verification links to the posts of different cheeters. This is a big piece of work, because in fact there are a lot of cheaters on Steemit. You can see their latest reports:

In my post I showed you the very tip of this hefty iceberg of deception (and maybe just newbies' mistakes) on Steemit and
showed you how not to act. I chose random users from New posts section as examples, I did not use links and mentions of individuals (just printscreens), so that it was not considered as personal attacks.
@anyx, @patrice - they are the people who see the whole picture and make our Steemit ocean a little cleaner and more fair. If you like it, you can vote for them as your witnesses. And try to play fair - this is the least that you can do for our common prosperity.

Me, me, me likes your very informative post very much! Come have a look at my post on dildo farming and follow me, me, me...
😂 😂 😂
Very good, Erika.
I bet after this comment many users came to your blog in search of this amazing post:-)
Hehe... I couldn't help myself.
I get those moronic comments all the time.
Detailed investigation with illustrative examples, almost with all agree but the promotion self posts for own funds with the help of bots is not a sin in my opinion ... because those who have a great voice power can and do upvote self coment, post or their own close circle and we can't blame them for it so... To much pressure on authors on this platform also not so good, how to compete with other social networks where there is no such increased importance of the observance of copyrights and the like...
No, I'm not saying that using bots is a sin, maybe you misunderstood me.
There is nothing wrong with using bots, just like in the owning of multiple accounts, when they are used to support unique, original and quality content (maybe even their own). But if they are used to promote spam posts or plagiarism, will you agree that this is wrong? Just like supporting own comments by some of the whales, because users' concentration only on itself destroys the communicative component of Steemit as a social network.
This all hurts Steemit in a long-term perspective. This sets a bad example, undermines the faith of other users in the fair distribution of awards. It works like a snowball: if a few months ago you sometimes came across a shit (spam, plagiarism, etc.) in our NEW, then today it's hard to find a quality post under a bunch of this.
No offense, I respect anyone who is trying to build any platform a better place for their users, but we are on the network where you can BUY your reputation and visibility with bots. It is allowed and it is even promoted by the most successful bloggers. If you don't buy, then your post will be simply invisible. As long as this kind of practice exists bringing morality in is very very relative.
I cant spam people for some reason, but they who can just be doing what is allowed. If we want to make this place better we need to come up with the idea to change the algorithm or rules.
So, spamming is allowed but is somehow immoral and it will be judged by the "Steemit police" but hey, you can buy your reputation with bots, that's ok.
I'm trying to understand the logic here, but I cant. It seems to me like "Let's fight those little guys trying to earn few dollars, but we can leave those who are earning thousands, they are already too big, they can outrank us easily"
Good post dear
Just joking! :D You've done an amazing work and I agree these are problematic. When I get sad about it, I just open a beer! Have fun and don't let them ruin your day!
I probably have a more feminine view of things: when I see a mess around, I'm starting to clean up.
And then, when the inspiration and desire to make the world better is over, I can relax and have a beer:-)
Thank you for your kind words!
Well, what's bad about this? if you want to praise post and in the moment your head is empty :)
You are so right with everything! We should all contribute to the keep Steemit clean, everyone with the means he has, e.g. report spam, plagiarism and comment spam with selfvoting to @steemcleaners.
Let's hope that we will manage to hold all this down...
Thanks for this valuable post! Great job!
Thank you for your interest in this matter.
Unfortunately, not even all "oldtimers" understand what harm the cheating brings to Steemit. Many live only a short-term perspective, trying to snatch more today, without thinking about tomorrow. Their actions give rise to a chain reaction: when one person does poorly and receives rewards, everyone starts to do poorly to receive rewards. This led us to the fact that almost 1/3 of all newly created posts contain elements of unfair play (intentionally or simply because of ignorance).
While it is not surprising at all you are right but honestly most of the ones you mention cause only a little damage - peanuts - the real reward pool rapers and scammers are different people. The ones you should avoid to mention as otherwise you are fucked :-). However it is a social media platform where money is involved, so all this is natural and a mirror of mankind. People tend to try getting as much money out of the system as possible. If some have heavily invested money I even understand this.
@patrice is doing a great job indeed, totally agree - she needs more SP probably.
I saw more than I described, and this upset me enough to not share this and not frighten the rest of the people. And yes, I do not want to be fucked - I do not have the power to wage a flag-war with all these unmentionable. There are things that Patrice can not even cope with.
The goal of the post was to show the beginners how not to act. All this copy / paste and plagiarism from beginners make the curation work absolutely impossible, it causes the desire to throw everything to hell and do the same. It's like a snowball, when today we have 1 plagiarist, and tomorrow we can not find a single unique post in the total mass of plagiarism. And this is something that we can still influence. I hope.
Wow, Crazy I didn't know how bad it was out there, thanks for shining a light on this issue, why do they not just provide decent content and value to the platform, people will do anything to avoid having to put work in (if you can even call it work)
Thanks for showing the good and the bad :)
Just like in real life, there are people who are looking for a short and easy way, causing damage to others. Sometimes they get punished. A separate category is the newcomers who do not know what is welcomed here and what does not, and just need a friendly advice.
We should remember that Steemit is our ocean, our home, and we must take care of this place, if we want to save it for tomorrow. Thank you for your interest to this topic.
Fantastic article, @erikaflynn! I have dropped a link to this article in my Discord Server #resources channel, and I'm going to take your advice, and add @patrice as one of my Witnesses. I already have @anyx selected.
I really appreciate the time you took to illustrate your points with screen shots with the added highlighting. That helped a lot!
I've upvoted and resteemed this article as one of my daily post promotions for the @mitneb Curation Trail Project. It will be featured in the @mitneb Curation Trail Project Daily Report for 03 FEB 2018.
Cheers!
It's just great!
These knowledges must be spread among Steemit newbies to prevent them from bad behavior and next loosing of their reputation. And of course our "good warriors" need our support.
Thank you for helping me in this educational project.
@erikaflynn I have found steemit to be a microcosm of the real world, after all, we are dealing with real people from the real world, so why wouldn't it be.
From the beginning I have seen that steemit needs to be built on quality posting and quality curation, if it is to have a healthy growth. Anywhere there is money and power there will be those who will attempt to abuse, for their own gain. Lets just hope there is enough of us who don't game the system, to overpower the gamers.
So it is important for everyone to use their vote wisely when voting for witnesses, as I believe these are the people who will ultimately decide the future of the community.
Thank you for your work and time in highlighting these abuses.
amen for sure, so so true!
Much thanks for your support!
You have put so much effort into this post listing down the various forms of abuse. The very fact that you are posting about it will help fight it!
Steemcleaners is a small group fighting a big menace. By supporting the group we will give it the power to fight abuse so that spammer, scammers and outright abusers never win.
You're right, I spent a few days on it and this is my contribution to making our huge Steemit Ocean a little cleaner. Its future depends on each of us, on how honestly we behave and how much we are tolerant to the dirt around.
I forgot to write about this, but besides the direct support of the Steemcleaners, you can also report the violators here https://steemcleaners.org/abuse-report/. It is anonymously and even encouraged by small rewards for good findings;-)
Thank you for the extra information.
There is abuse everywhere, there are people who reward false flattery with huge upvotes and there are self appointed hard men and women who try to alter the rights of other people through force. We should expect this from a decentralised, strongly libertarian system, online or offline.
So many spammers is a sad reality when earnings are possible I try to avoid them wherever possible
This is such an impressive detailed post
I hoped that it would be useful for beginners, but it seems that nobody is reading here, everyone is writing...
I think if people especially beginners to the time to read itthey would learn a lot and be better both in how they act but watching for others scamming or spamming and hopefully help build the integrity and trust on the platform
Learn a lot, and like that it’s also in Russian! :)

Excellent done info. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for reading!
very nice
Are you sure that you understood my message?
Nice work @erikaflynn... You seem to have studied the whole pranks being played on this platform.
ypur post is indeed an eyeopener and i know its the reality, lots of abusive doings here ,hope everyone's gotta be fair specially to those whobwrite only quality content and writing to express themselves and inspire others, thanks for this @erikaflynn 👏👍😘❤️❤️❤️
