We currently have 61,392 accounts on Steemit, but how many of them are active?
I have decided to look into the past 7 days of activity on the blockchain:
Start: 2016-08-07T00:00:00, Block #3859146
End: 2016-08-14T00:00:00, Block #4059780
Results
It turns out 13,083 users were active in the past week.
Every account that has written at least 1 blog post, or comment, or casted a vote is deemed active.
Has Posted | Has Commented | Has Voted | |

My Interpretation
It looks like we had about ~6k active authors and ~12.7k active readers last week.
To me, this is good news, as I have guesstimated the size of the author community to be between 2-3k - and we have double that.
I think active authors is a better metric than registered users, because they create value on a recurring basis, bring their own audiences over, and attract other authors. Furthermore, the more quality content we have, the better the search traffic. It all feeds back into more users and growth.
If you thought most of the 60k accounts are 'real', then this may come as a slight disappointment to you.
It is worth noting, that a chunk of the accounts are/were miners.
Furthermore, it seems like we are under the attack of cybersquatting. People are registering valuable names such as @samsung, @gap and @gym with hopes to be able to sell those names in the future.
Most Active Users
Here is the list of 50 most active writers in the last week.
You will see that the ones on the top of the list are mostly spammers.

I am a bit annoyed with spammers skewing the leaderboards, but hopefully they will go away once they realize spam isn't profitable around here.
Does editing a post 'bump' it?
I've noticed some people edit their posts a lot. A person I shall not name does edit their post 30-40 times after posting.
Does anyone know if editing a post has any effect on its position in steemit.com feed?
not sure if editing a post 'bumps' you. but given the 4 posts per day rule that come in recently even if he did get exposure the penalty for that many updates would wipe out his potential gain anyway
Yes they will get penalised in the payouts so it doesn't really matter. I think originally this was a bug but it actually prevents people gaming the system this way.
This is a better way to drive activity. Stee activity lotto. We can make it work and still prevent spam using existing tools. https://steemit.com/steem-ideas/@dennygalindo/steem-idea-ways-to-increase-active-users-activity-lotto
I should take some vacation.Oh lol, 9th in comments considering @isaac.asimov and @cheetah are bots. :D
So I'm not on any list? Shame on me. I like your post and It was good information, at least for me.
In theory, given the dis-incentives for posting more than 4 times per day, we'd expect a max of around 28 posts per week (4x7=28), yet this is where the top50 starts...
I think we can look in retrospect and learn what happened as other social media platforms grew...cybersquatting...never really thought of it - yet, it's so obvious...it's like a new iteration of domain name marketing...anyway, there's a place for everybody..I guess...and as you said, with time and with the development of the platform we should be better able to get things under better control.
My problem with Steemit is that there aren't enough quality posts. Medium is my preferred place to go for quality posts to read and contribute, the community is more quality, the people are more quality. People who write there genuinely write quality stuff that come to my inbox and make me want to read it and log on. I come here and it's hard to want to be involved. It's mostly just people talking about themselves; and not about others, what they can do for others or what they are doing for others. Not enough tips or advice or guides or people interested in them; no how to program X, Y, Z, etc.
Steemit is cool concept, and it's creating a way to do social media different, but, I wish steemit had more quality and less junk and an easier way to sif through it, as well as to modify your personal identity and so on. Sure I could write some posts here and maybe I will but being a reader who enjoys reading quality stuff online, hard to find that on steemit. Maybe it is the type of audience steemit attracts, I'll have to think more on that. In any case it's personally why I am not active on steemit, at this point and time it's simply not rewarding or fun to be here beyond 'financial' reward.
I agree about an easier way to sift through it. As writers go, it is very heartbreaking to watch your quality pieces list at $0.08 only to fade into oblivion to never be seen again while a playful kitten goes for $825.00. Without a healthy group of established followers there is no exposure and great work can virtually never be seen. Coming over to steem I brought a few followers along, hence a few gets me 8 cents. I understand patience, and in time, blah blah blah and as a writer, I get that. My friend is still getting $0.00 each day. How does it not feel like a slap in the face. How many good writers will leave? I do not believe that more than 20 people have ever seen my work. Thinking about chasing my cat around with my camera, maybe junk pays.
actually there is plenty of quality real life issue posts. I write some. Infact im trying to raise awareness about fucking up other peoples towns and cities when people go to festivals. Basically unless you put your penis in the butt of steemit you will not get the upvotes.... Sad but true.
My observations: Editing a post bumps you in the (active) ranking. The 4 posts/day penalty does not apply to this.
This idea will increase activity

thanks for the stats! @furion 8]
Thank you for your efforts in doing this research.I would like to point out one thing when it comes to inactive accounts: Some people register (like my girlfriend and my room mate),and then forget about it,because it´s new to them, they have others things to do,and it seems a bit abstract.A lot of people have the intuition that the money in Steem is not "real" because they are not used to cryptocurrencies.I think my girlfriend will reconsider when her steemit account balance is bigger ,in a month or so..
Is there a way for the admin to get rid of spammers?
Who is "the admin" on a decentralized blockchain?
I hope for a day when we will look to ourselves to solve problems instead of some authority.
This will increase activity. A Steem activity lotto. We can do it without adding spam. See here

I think they are the bot spammer's generals.
No, you down vote spammers. We all have to collectively police the community ourselves through our voting power.
I'm number 14 on the most active user list. Pretty cool.
Hmm I didn't see me there.
Great information! Thank you for taking the time to put this together for the steemit community.
Steem on,
Mike
what about most active voters?
Is there a way to tell how many votes a user has cast per week/month/total somewhere?
Ok this means we are not with so many. So how is it even possible we are not earning more ;-). Anyway nice stats. I will follow you.
I've got to thank you, furion; My main goal is learning a new thing every day, and today that new thing is cybersquatting. I've got to wonder, as I have most days lately if my 'value translation' parameters are too calcified to change. My default setting of 'blisters+blood+sweat = value' needs an upgrade. Does anyone know of a download that would upgrade me from Neandertal 1.5 to CyberAware Human 1.0?
I do. It's called Acid...and I don't mean hydrochloric, either ;)
HAHAHAHA!! I'll laugh about that for some time. My drug of choice is beer with a tequila chaser. I never drink tequila by itself. Last time I did that, it has been independently reported, that I began a campaign for Governor -- during which I was accused of kissing all the babes in the bar - and I didn't get arrested. That was some time ago.
Amazing! Let's steemit all. Let's make the community big. It's a active users that creates the increasing value for community! Keep on steeming, all fellow steemers! I see this project has a great potential to grow up fast! Let's steem the world!
It is good to know that a lot of editing will be punished. I don't agree with that by the way, why punish an update? I started a few days ago and I am pretty active here, so I hope to be in the list next week or in two weeks, haha :)
i enjoy this info!
Hope to see myself here soon!
I see my name there ; top 39 commentator
Didn't know I was doing that many 🙊🙊🙊😋
Is nice to be notice. 👍@furion

good stuff, thanks for putting this together
Great post, thank you!
Thank you much for the statistics! Great work here :)
thank you for the great steemstistics
Wow I made it on the list.I didn't realize that I made so many comments.
@furion This is great info. Might be a lot of fun to see who the top 50 posters and commentors are by upvotes.
Interesting!
Every account that has written at least 1 blog post, or comment, or casted a vote is deemed active.
I'm curious, are these stats of users counting each person once, or is it counting how many posts were made? Does one person who makes 100 comments counted only once as an active user?
I'd really like to see how many people are purchasing steem and powering up to get steem power. I think the bigger question in the short terms is how many people are purchasing steem to power up. If there are not enough new people purchasing ownership in the currency then the venture capital that is allowing for people to cash out is going to go dry up very quickly. If on the other hand people are purchasing a lot of steem power, even if only as a speculative investment, that can still carry the liquidity that is needed in the system for a while. Ultimately, however, users need to feel it is worth purchasing steem power because the influence on the platform is worth the investment, which ultimately means steemit.com needs to drive off site traffic and economic activity to be worth the investment in steem power. I don't see anyone talking about this need to drive off site economic activity and I think it is the most critical measure of long term success for the platform. Do you agree? If so, can you gather the stats on people powering up? Could you gather data on traffic being directed from Steemit.com to other sites? If you disagree, why do you disagree?
how many steemPower SP have you today furion?
