Thanks for taking the time to write this. I'm still at the stage of "what the hell is going on here" and you helped me make some sense of it. I'm still a bit tongue-tied when it comes to this place, but I can certainly see its potential.
By the way, could you explain to me (as you would a 5-year old) how the SteemD.com site works? There doesn't seem to be anywhere to put in my id, and I can't find a login link but when I click "Create an account" it logs me in to Steemit and puts me on the feed page. What am I doing wrong?

Your steemd account should be http://steemd.com/@irenepsmith
It will have a list of your feed, the votes, your curation and author rewards....it's got a lot of other information too. I'm still trying to figure out what half of it is. LOL
Another tool that seems to be popular is http://steemstats.com
