If you are NOT a whale or dolphin * VOTE 100% * and get involved in the community. Here's why.

VOTE 100%

Fine and Good - but who the hell am I to tell you how to vote, right?

Vote 100% at Steemit by Meredith Loughran
These minnows vote 100%

Well, I've got something to say about it and you can take it at face value or go on your merry way.

If you haven't read @markrmorrisjr's post Dude Where's Our Votes? #DolphinSchool, the vote weirdness of the past two days and a balanced approach to it!, you really ought to.

He clearly extrapolates that voting limits are on people's minds and possibly curbed their voting habits. WHY?

Well, about 2 weeks ago I wrote about my thoughts on the hardfork changes that were to happen on September 13th. You can read it here if you'd like.

@hisnameisollie wrote The New '5 Vote Target' does NOT Reduce Rewards - It Democratises Steemit Curation!!

@razvanelulmarin wrote I will become a whale in 24hours, here's how.

Those are only 3 articles of active users finding reasons why going from 40 to 5 votes at full strength was a good idea. We were on board and coaxed the nay-sayers.

We had two solid weeks to think about it and figure out our new voting/curating game plan.

But then it changed

From community concerns and backlash, the developers decided not to go through with the changes in voting power.

Too many of you did not get that message.

Vote Balancing

We have reverted the changes to vote balancing from 0.14.0. Voting power and vote weights are unaffected in this release
.

Correct me if I'm wrong

If you go to Steemd.com and type in your @ username, you will see how many vests you have.

I finally broke a million and earned my vote slider.

In my humble opinion, the vote slider is a pain in the ass because it's one more button I have to click.
Listen, if I bother to vote, I'm giving 100% - and most of the time I follow up with a comment.

WHY? Because I'm a friggin minnow - that's why!
And I'll probably be a minnow for a long-assed time because I have to have between 10 - 100 million vests to be a dolphin - and <100 million vests to be a whale.

What does this mean?

It means that while you're a growing minnow, your votes aren't worth that much in monetary value - but they are priceless to those who are growing their community.

> And here's a news flash <

Your comments offset the loss of vote power

It's true.

I make it a habit to go through my feed and upvote my favorites. I just go down the line and upvote like a bandit while opening their blog post in a new tab. Then I visit each tab to read at my leisure and comment... And my vote power recovers with every comment.

Don't believe me? Then I challenge you to try this experiment for yourself.

  • Open up a new tab for Steemd.com and check your vote power.
  • In new tabs, start upvoting your favorite blogs.
  • See how your vote power decreases (hit the F5 button for that tab to refresh, y'all)
  • Now go ahead and begin to comment on those blog posts.
  • Refresh your Steemd tab and see how your vote power increases.

It is my thought that even if the 5 full vote power was implemented, minnows would still be virtually unaffected.

Do it.

Here's Your Call to Action

We're not hookers.

  • Stop the Wham, Bam, Thank-you, Ma'am upvotes for 100th of a penny! Yeah, you, minnows! You know who you are.
  • COMMENT and get to know us
  • COMMENT to stabilize your vote power
  • COMMENT because you frikken care

Final Thoughts

I think I've said my peace and getting off the soap-box now. Oh, and I'll take your pennies if you leave them - but I'm no hooker. Leave a damn comment!

It would be fun if you could dial up your slider to go beyond 100% (with a corresponding loss in voting power). If Ned/Dan had branded the voting change in that manner, everyone would have loved it (and it would have been the same thing.)

lol - It's a bit

isn't it? :)

Yea, well it's like:
Ned: Hey everybody! We are going to let you super power your vote by up to 800%!
Everyone: yey! wow superpower!

Ned: Hey everybody. We are reducing your votes from 40 to 5.
Everyone: Booo! You're taking away our votes pitchforks

It's all on how you present something.

yeah! boo - hiss with pitchforks and torches! LOL
I was totally on board with the whole 40 to 5 thing because...well, it didn't really apply to me anyway. On the flip side, we've witnessed the "danger" of being completely transparent because the people who don't understand will start screaming that the sky is falling.

I'm not saying I completely understand all the workings - I don't - but I'm going to do some research first before I freak out about anything.

I completely agree with this. I can only see the vote slider being useful if your vote is worth double figure dollars or more!

Right, I didn't even know about the vote slider til I had one. It is annoying. Why would I want to devalue my already small amount of power?

exactly!

but people are doing it across the board.

When I didn't have it, I wanted it. Now that I have it - I flippin' hate it. LOL
Maybe they should consider upping the distribution of the vote slider to dolphins and up?

Can you imagine though, suddenly we would want it again!! lol!

ROFLMAO - you are so right! being human sucks sometimes. hahaha!

hope u r right cos i do not know how to democratise

I've been checking Steemd to upvotes and comments since I've started and it has remained consistent. Comments help offset the drain on your vote power. I encourage you to see for yourself! :)

thank you for sharing your thoughts and useful links! follow you and upvote your grrat post!

I hope you find it useful and give it a try. It can't hurt, right? :)

Now I know why I do not have a slider yet because it was not implemened.I have a good reason now to become a Vest Millionaire so I can have this slider.

beware of what you ask for. I personally find it to be a hassle - but I know where you're coming from because I really wanted it when I didn't have it. :)

Wow, i for one was completely misunderstanding the policy. I rejoice that I can vote away freely to encourage new and small time contributors . I know a single vote means a lot to me. From this liberated minnow, thanks for enlightening me. :-)

I'm fairly certain that my findings are not unique so I would encourage you to take a look at your Steemd account info: http://steemd.com/@ukblogger Then try upvoting like 5 posts. Watch the vote power drop. Then start commenting. You'll see it increasing with each one. Time also increases the vote power, but it's very slow.

Ah thanks, i shall test the theory

This helps a lot, some of this is beginning to sink into my head.
I guess I need more SP to get a fancy slider-- or, I don't know how to find it.
Thanks for sharing the info.

Honestly, I have no idea the correlation between SP, STEEM, SBD or how vests are even calculated. I just observe the numbers and make notes about any changes to my account :) As soon as I hit 1m vests, my slider appeared. That's all I know.

I didn't know that comments restored your voting power. Thank you for the info.

As I mentioned to @ukblogger, there is no way that my account is uniquely set up this way - and I've had about 2 months of observation to come to this conclusion. Check it out on your account http://steemd.com/@matthewtiii

I tried messing around with the slider a while back and just felt lousy doing it. if I like a post it deserves 100 %. i don't have to worry about adjusting the sliider for a very long time.

I don't like the slider at all, Sarah. So I'm keeping my votes up until I make it to the next level and then reassess.

me to, I can't see me moving it off 100 for a long time.

Got to love those pissant 1% votes, and the minnow voters who think you should be grateful for them. After all, a vote is a vote :P

Right?!?! and no comments from the peanut gallery either. It's hysterical. But, you know, I grew up in retail and know the value of a good tip, so when I get a poor tip, I think 1. They're a jerk or 2. They're a cheapskate because it couldn't possibly be my service! << I'm being facetious. I don't think I've consciously linked that line of thinking to Steemit until just now. Hmm...

Upvote cheapskates. Love it!

I'm all about the 100% - unless I've been trying to vote on my phone- then it could be on anything as I can't use my phone! I should avoiding doing anything Steemit related on phones as I'm all thumbs.

I think I would go batshit crazy if I had to do any of this on an iphone. Seriously! I have patience but they don't need to be tested that much. LOL

This is useful info. I didn't know what metric separated minnows from dolphins from whales or understand the vests number or when I would have the choice of voting a percentage. Thanks! I keep adding to my understanding of Steemit, a tiny piece at a time.

This post makes a lot of sense. When I get to the point of having a choice, though, I might choose to give a percentage to shorter comments that I want to upvote and a full amount to blogs and longer comments.

I don't understand vests at all. I've no idea how it's accumulated or tracked, but I'm of the same mind as you. Vote 100% on posts and use the slider (if you've got it) on comments. Though most of the time I just upvote fully on comments that I really, really like.

My votes have counted for so little up to now that I haven't worried about it. I know when I'm voting on a post by an author I like that I'm probably missing several more by that same person, because there's only so much time and I don't do any automatic voting. My learning curve on the technical side of it has been so steep that I'm just now starting to pay attention to metrics.

Very positive post. We need as much of that as possible. I was going to post it at curie but you've had some over $30 in the last couple of days. I'm submitting it in my heart though...

Aw, thanks @hanshotfirst - I really appreciate the sentiment :)

<3

Really good insight. It takes courage to find a voice but you make the objectives pretty clear here and i just wanted to thank you for that...I need to comment more, I agree it's hand in hand with recognition is acknowledgement... Nobody wants money and no love, or love and no money. Thanks for the reminder.

Great post! Thanks for the info :)

This is wonderful information. Sometimes it feels like I am all alone in the minnow pond. I might have found my crew. Thanks

You are definitely NOT alone @runrudy - but nowhere in the blog did I mention it was easy. Just keep at it and make sure you interact with people. It makes a huge difference and they're more likely to follow you back and refer your quality work to groups like curie or robinhoodwhale, and the like. :)

Thanks @merej99 . Starting to make some friends. People are cool here. These tips are very useful for newbies worried about making mistakes. I am one of them. Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks for taking the time to write this. I'm still at the stage of "what the hell is going on here" and you helped me make some sense of it. I'm still a bit tongue-tied when it comes to this place, but I can certainly see its potential.

By the way, could you explain to me (as you would a 5-year old) how the SteemD.com site works? There doesn't seem to be anywhere to put in my id, and I can't find a login link but when I click "Create an account" it logs me in to Steemit and puts me on the feed page. What am I doing wrong?

Hey Irene
Your steemd account should be http://steemd.com/@irenepsmith
It will have a list of your feed, the votes, your curation and author rewards....it's got a lot of other information too. I'm still trying to figure out what half of it is. LOL
Another tool that seems to be popular is http://steemstats.com

OK, that gives me one more bit of information I can use. Thanks again!

I'm more of a plankton. I dream of being a minnow one day. I've voted as much as forty times in one twenty four hour period and STILL have not managaged to appreciably decrease my Voting Power. The least I've been able to ever make it go was into the seventy percent range. It's never been any less than that no matter how hard I try.

THEN...when I take a break, you know, for like....life?, and come back on Steam a few hours later?

It's healed. 90%+ again.

My conclusion is that peoples concerns about losing voting power are misplaced.

In other news: A millions vests for a slider huh?

Hey, you've got a really good rep score...how can you possibly consider yourself plankton? LOL
Oh, the slider... I'm not a fan of it at all. When you type as much as I do, every extra key stroke counts, you know what I mean?
I just checked my stats on Steemstats.com and I've done 47 votes in 24 hours...and my vote power is only down to 74%. I think we're safe.
