So guys, I'm going to keep this short and sweet
I bet a lot of you are wondering what that number beside your name means. I know I did. (Currently my number is resting at a six). As I said in the title 9 is the highest number possible, -8 is the lowest (poor wang). A majority of the SteemIt community rests at a score of 1. (34,455 users are at a 1 to be exact).
Your reputation number is based on the amount of up votes and flags that you have received this far in SteemIt.
This is great because the better the reputation you have (a higher number is better), the more influence you have on others’ reputation. Not only can you help other awesome Steemians build credibility (and their reputation), you can help defeat “spammy” and bad content. (Not to mention combat bad bots!) It will also help us choose good articles to read because we all know, that no one has time to read all of them! (Although, I try being as I live on here).
For users with lower reputation scores this is not so great. You will have little (if any) influence on the reputation of others. If your score happens to be very low your comments won't even appear. So keep your rep up!
Reputation scores will help people focus on what's important, positive feedback from the right people. Whether you've thought about it or not you're building a brand for yourself here with your content. With dollar signs attached to our posts it’s hard to think of anything that didn’t earn money as successful. Reputation scores give us that extra little push to keep grinding. If you keep your head up you will be successful, as long as you focus on quality!
Thanks for reading! This post will be updated throughout the day as I learn more about it.
If you like my content fell free to follow me. (Hint, hint).

I really like this as I can quickly judge if I want to spend any time reading a posters article.
True, but at the same time, new users who may create great content may have a low reputation. However blatant spammers and rude people will be much easier to ignore if you see their opinions are not respected.
Yes that's a good point, but it will still help a lot
I agree. It's going to save me so much time. Especially on SteemIt.chat
Where did you get this information ?
What are you sources ?
This is a quick answer I have pieced together from multiple sources. I haven't even gotten the picture up yet lol. I will update it with full sources and better information as the day progresses. I just need a little time. For now this was the best quick answer I could give.
Thank you :)
Just to remind you: This is the internet.
The day progresses for one more hour here, then we have the next day ;)
Have one source up for you. More to come! Sorry I didn't get one sooner. This was an on the fly post. I don't have access to a laptop today so it's hard to keep up with. I hope you respect my honesty.
It was me that enquiries first

I didn't see your post lol. I was just trying to get an answer out fast for people. Thanks for stopping in though!
I like the transparency to see how a person is generally valued by the community. However, at the same time I'm afraid this gives rise to even more bots that autovote based on rep. I don't think more bots is a good thing :(
The existence of reputation doesn't give rise to these bots. The bot operators could calculate their own "rep score" whether we provide one or not. More likely, they will have a far more sophisticated rep score that is a better predictor of post value.
Our rep system errors on the side of tolerance (or tries to). Theirs would aim for predictive power.
I mean it's a very easy implementation. Not everybody knows about predictive modeling while voting bots are freely available.
How do you see this holding up to bot owners simply voting their accounts in the positive again? Are there algorithms in place to prevent recurring votes from being as impactful as varied ones?
Yes, they already do develop own "rep score" , mostly it is just a list of users to vote right after if someone of the list made an upvote. There's much more ways to be creative on that field though.
Great point! I haven't thought about that angle. Very interesting.
Good info, thanks! I was just going to ask what this was all about :)
I was asking the question myself! And I thought oh shit I should post this lol. It will be more refined later. Come back and check in for more information later!
I gotta get my reputation up. Who do I have to seduce!?
A bunch of whales.
Agreed, this is a VERY cool new feature.
Thank You! I always enjoy new information on #steemit , especially when I hadn't noticed the number. I will follow you considering I love tutorials! Thank you for sharing. It's very well written by the way.
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
Nice!
What's the highest number?
A 9! Only 1 person has achieved that score.
Thanks, good info!
I was just wondering about that when I saw your post on the chat.
Any idea how is it calculated?
Not yet a complete picture yet. I wanted to put to bed the idea that it had something to do with sbd in people's accounts. It definitely has it's drawbacks but I think overall this is an awesome new feature.
I think a system was definitely needed to show who is consistently posting great comments and questions and posts vs potential spammers and those with less value to add here. I wonder if this metric will someday increase our payouts for maintaining a certain level. Also along with the reputation, a fish representing your size in the steemit ocean should appear. Possibly plankton, minnow, some sort of medium sized fish, shark (high amount of voting down correctly) dolphin and whale. This feedback system could become a fun part of steemit and never many people wondering who to trust. Knowing those with low reputation may either be new or potential trolls, it makes those with higher reputation more likely to be listened to and have their words taken to heart. Great feature
Not to mention it could be great for crowdfunding on the platform. I can't wait to see what's waiting in the future! Thanks for the read!
Yes it definitely will cut down on the trolling that has been hurting some users experiences. Hopefully some tweaks will be made to make sure there is no chance for abuse for people voting down others simp!y for disagreeing than actual spam or hate
The only concern I have is that if you express an opinion that doesn't sit well with a whale overlord you can hurt your rep very bad. As far as I know, once your rep gets so low, you can't up vote anymore.
Ive seen it with @earnest someone who is a bit polarizing. Many people vilify him and some people appreciate aspects of what he does. With the new feedback system, his posts are virtually invisible. While I believe everyone should have a voice, I agree that people who continuously devalue the experience should have repercussions. While I don't wish to have everyone pretend they agree with everything, I'd much rather people pretend to agree than to become rude or hateful. And those on the edge may think twice about posting something to belittle someone. Trolling on steemit will have users having very little visibility. I think this is a great step forward.
aww, ok cool.. figured it was a rating but I was looking for details.. thanks for sharing bud
When I look at my name I see '11'? That can't be right?
I don't know. It is fairly new. Give the system time to update. If you are an 11 though feel free to up vote everything I ever write :) . Let me know what you find out, or what happens? That's an interesting problem to have. You're showing up as a 3 on my screen.
I guess it was bugged, it showed me being at 11 but then it changed to 3.
Shot you an up-vote from another number six
Thanks buddy! Us sixes gotta stick together lol.
This would make sense if the numbers i saw were actually from -9 to 9!
my number is 25, i see a lot of 61s, aa 34 just looking on the comments here. care to explain?
They switched the system up. They ended up knocking don everyone a notch and switching to a two digit system. I'm sure more changes are in store. We are in beta. So the higher the number now the better the reputation. Personally I like the 2 digit system better because it's easier to see progress.
