Shared from experiences, from my friends who are pilots, and my friends' friends who are also pilots; technically if the weather is still good, and the pilot (of course this should be the case) is experienced one (because the airlines are not stupid they will put a senior and a junior together), 1 defect engine and 1 healthy engine, you can still technically fly (and probably glide a but) and still able to land safely at the nearest airport.
I have a good friend from MAS who, a couple of years back, just took off for about 30 minutes to an hour and one of the engines was kind of falling apart (I wasn't sure how bad was it), he still managed to turn the flight around (as they were no airports in between) and circle around the airport to wait for a slot to descend, and still land safely and smoothly. At that time he was not even captain ranks yet; but he (like any other crew who has strict training) could land the plane safely. If not mistaken it was a 777 Boeing.
Of course, he prayed and he had faith and he did the best he could - stay calm.
I hope this gives you some confidence when things looks bad, with good hands on deck, things aren't going to go downwards and crash. :)
