Can we have a "Save as Draft" feature for posts in the editor? One for the Devs!

Save as Draft

Its a feature that is found in lot of mail or social media applications. I think it is sorely needed here.

Quite often I am working on a post and in another tab of my browser, regardless of it being on my phone or laptop I will have other tabs open so I can keep tabs on the activities of my fellow steemers. I like to be able to vote and comment whilst creating a post as it can take me an hour or two to bang one out. cheeky

However sometimes I am working on a post that takes longer and I might be looking occasionally at steemit when I see something that catches my eye that makes me want to put a post up about that subject. But I can't. Not really, only if I am willing to copy my other post over to notepad and take a note of my tags and header line. The I would have to rattle out my new post then copy everything back in to carry on with my original post.

Some posts that I have in mind are ones that would have to be updated over a process of weeks. These if I could have a saved draft I could add photos to as the subject matter of the post developed and then when finally ready could put up my big post without having to do it mostly at once.

There could be a maximum number of drafts allowed or some other limiter to avoid server space issues where people save millions of drafts but never do anything with them. But these are issues that could be worked out.

Imagine if you even had a small sub menu called "drafts" and you could have up to five that you were working on.

Cor, I am excited at the thought. I am loath to ping any of the devs as I would hate to be seen as a spammer but I hope this idea gets noticed!

Cheers and let me know what you think!

I don't see how this would work unless it's stored in the browser's local storage, and then it's only on the machine you wrote it on.

The reason I think this is because otherwise it'd be saved to the blockchain and anyone could just wait for drafts to be saved and then copy them.

You could encrypt the post first before saving it, but this adds a whole layer of hassle to something that can be solved by saving it to a file yourself.

Perhaps I'm overthinking it though.

You could very well be right. I hadn't thought on the implications of the blockchain. Still even if it could be saved locally but you were still within the steemit app that might be a help.

Perhaps I was underthinking it! :O)

This is a great idea and thanks for sharing. Saving something to a draft would be easier than having to keep saving to other formats. I'm happy to upvote. Following and looking forward to reading more of your posts. Cheers. Stephen

Cheers man, likewise followed! Yeah, it's not really good enough to have workarounds when things like this should be baked in to the platform!!

I usually have about 10+ notepads opened :))

It's the only way!! Lol

Yes, me too. I rarely work straight to Steemit.

Yes! Yes! Yes! we need draft's I hate writing in google doc's.

Me too, I want to do it all in steemit!!

Plus if you write it in Google docs, technically it's not yours anymore. Google owns the data it stores.

drafts is a great idea. Having said that, I write my post in Scrivener and then move it to Steemit for final formatting and editing. I always have a second copy of my posts and should my computer crash, it is always saved.

Sounds sensible! I just want if I am on Steemit to be on it and not faffing around on other apps or tools. Also I have had the odd occasion where something has looked perfect and I have posted it with only a cursory double check and then something is needing fixed and I am like oh no an edit counts as a post!!

Thinking of that it would be good also if you were allowed to edit a post within ten minutes and it didnt count as your daily quota of posts.

I've lost so many drafts of writing that I have now got into the habit of writing on a word document first, it's easier to edit and alter before publishing - even then, I find I'm going back into the post once published.
The disappointment and anger at myself when I do lose a piece of writing is avoided (mostly) and I can always go back and read what I've written, taking snippets out as and when necessary, without trawling through my posts on Steemit (that's a bonus too because I usually get side-tracked on here lol)

I am the same, I tap my stuff out sometimes in word sometimes in note pad but it's not till you see it in the editor you know it looks just right!

I've lost a few solid comments too when my mouse was over the reply button and my hand touched the ultra-sensitive keyboard, but I've been burned too many other times (on other platforms) where a piece was lost. I don't need that kind of anger in my life, so I've used Word to save everything.

support! current editing still has room for improvement.

I write in word using a template for my footer because I want to keep a 'hard copy' of my stories. It's not for fear that Steemit is going to close their doors any time soon, but I'm aware that my posts over 30 days will not have residual income so they're going to be migrated to my off-site blog.

That being said, a draft folder would be ideal for peeps who Steemit from their mobile devices because it's easier - but my guess is that a draft folder is very low on the priority list because we have word, google docs and notepad.

Yeah that's my worry that it is a low priority. But whilst seeming low it is actually something that would put people off joining so might be higher than is realised!

I have taken to writing on a markdown editor in android then copying over but it is still a faff

That's what I do as well :)

There is no save button, but when I go back to https://steemit.com/submit.html without posting what I have written is still there. I don't know how it works and how reliable this feature is though.

It's fairly reliable. The problem is that it is the same mechanism that prevents you opening up another window and starting a new post from scratch as when you hit create new post it brings up the current one!

Especially because sometimes you hit post and nothing happens.

I have had numerous mishaps. Much rage when it has happened!

Then, in the preview it showed my YouTube videos. But when I posted, they won't show.

Ouch that would be annoying. I have never had that

I would love to have that feature @meesterboom.

Let's start crossing them fingers!!

Exactly!! I said this in my blog!

It defeats the purpose of severing any middle man connection if I am having to go to a third party to get my writing done. I want to remain in this ecosystem and not jump around. Ideas sprout quickly, and there needs to be a page with all ideas analoged that I can go back to

Like what we see in Google docs upon opening a document.

You have phrased it far better than I did!! 😃

This is a great idea...

Cheers man!

Ok you lost me in the first paragraph. Sorry. My head is spinning. Copy your post to notepad, take a note of tags to a header line, rattle out a new post, and then copy everything back to a new post. For newbies or those of us that are not authors, we come to read and blog, theres just too many complicated posts , that leave us circling around , i just dont read it , and dont have time these days to try and understand it, sorry, ! 😉

I think that's what we all want ultimately, read and blog- just be nice to save a post to finish later!

Nice idea. sometimes, I come back to Submit and do find my partial entry before but mostly work with HTML nowadays after downloading an open source HTML editor.

Yeah it only has to happen once and Arrrrgh!! :o) I work offline myself now!
