There is no save button, but when I go back to https://steemit.com/submit.html without posting what I have written is still there. I don't know how it works and how reliable this feature is though.

It's fairly reliable. The problem is that it is the same mechanism that prevents you opening up another window and starting a new post from scratch as when you hit create new post it brings up the current one!
