Hello Steemit,
I feel a special kind of giddy whenever I receive a comment on a post. It reminds me of notes being passed around when I was in high school. Getting a note passed to me during class, or finding a note in my locker made me feel special, and comments make me feel a similar way.
But I still don't upvote comments on my posts. Why? Because as a little fishy with less than 500SP it doesn't make any sense for me to upvote comments on my posts. I only get 10-11 votes per day before my $0.03 starts to waver and become $0.02, and if the internal median price of steem goes down, my cents become smaller and smaller, sometimes even disappearing.
My first few months on steemit, I diligently upvoted all comments on my posts. It wasn't until later that I found that my $0.01, and $0.02 upvotes sometimes evaporated into nothing. Why? Because the weight of their worth, wasn't large enough to register on the blockchain, so they just disappeared.
I prefer to invest my upvotes differently. Instead of upvoting on comments, I respond to the comment, and then pay the commenters blog a visit. I read through their posts and familiarize myself with their work, and upvote a recent post or one that I particularly like.
By using this strategy, my upvote gathered with all the other votes on their post becomes something more tangible for their wallet. I also receive bigger curation rewards. Although the size of my curation rewards are small, they are intensely bigger than any interest rate I have ever received from any bank.
This also helps me to develop a circle of readers, as newbie writers like to build networks by reading each other work.
Do you have any similar steemit strategies? I would love it if you shared in the comments.
I can't say I agree with you completely but it makes a lot of sense. I upvote comments I like anyway because I just feel the money will come eventually as a newbie.
Yes, the money will come eventually.
It’s my thought that circling and giving your readers attention as writers and then contributing to their posts is more valuable, than simply upvoting a comment.
A lot of us learn the hard way. Its really cool to get upvotes from larger accounts. You can make some decent rewards if you connect with the right accounts that share your passions and want to give you a leg up!
I haven’t had any “large accounts” upvote and help my posts along, but I’ve found that an army of minnows helps as well.
Thanks for stopping by.
Your welcome. Not sure if this will help or not but here is some top comment voters.

Great post @metzli, I operate a similar system, you have to when you have 77SP :o) But I do occasional upvote a really good comment, or if I am short on time, and have close to 100% voting power, I upvote some comments from my followers... I cant wait for the day I get my slider, but I suspect that will not be for a long time yet, my target is by the end of this year... You've got to have a target!! :o)
You can get one quicker by leasing delegated sp. I wrote this old post about the idea :)
Minnow tip - Lease Delegated SP ASAP Now is a Good Time
I’ve leased SP too - it’s relatively cheap sometimes.
Thanks so much for sharing that post with me, I have read it, and leasing some SP certainly sounds like a good idea.... I am going to look into.. Thanks again.. Hope all good with you :o)
I look forward to my slider too. 77SP was more fun just a few months ago.
Good luck getting to 500!
Thanks a mil
I totally agree with you @metzli. Don't worry the time is coming that you will be up voting people anyway you like.
Thank you. I’m looking forward to that day. I think it will make the platform that much more fun.
That's a good strategy, thanks for sharing. I'm still fairly new in Steemit and though I've been trying to get posts out everyday there are still a lot of things that I'm not familiar with. Really need to sit down and study how things work sometime soon. Cheers! 😊
There’s so much to learn...
But writing (and reading/commenting) is the most important part of steem. If you do those, there’s growth coming no matter what your strategy.
Honestly I see your point, because if you with that reputation is still having dwindling comment upvote then mine will just disappear immediately I click the comment upvote, however I hope to up vote when my reputation increases. The thing is I like to upvote what I really appreciate, so if its a comment and I go to upvote a post instead the steemian doesn't get to know that I actually did that because of his or her comment unless I tell them . So later on I hope to up vote comments.
I don’t think it has to do with reputation as much as it has to do with SP.
I hope to upvote comments later too.
I check my stats: who commented, who upvotes, etc at www.steemworld.org/@metzli you can see your own if you replace the @metzli with your handle.
Alright cool, will do. Thanks.
Well, I disagree as well @metzli... Here's my reasoning :
If someone takes the trouble to leave a comment on one of my posts, I see it as part of my (mini) curation to decide if I upvote it or not.
Most often than not, I upvote comments, especially in the #needleworkmonday group. I do that because I regularly see wonderful posts that only receive 'pennies', so if those people visit my post and upvote me, I say 'thanks'.
Am I patronising ? Not the way I see it ! I see it as offering 'mutual support', but what really saddens is when people leave a comment but 'forget' to upvote ... Is my effort to write not worth a cent? (or even an upvote with no value ? )
Incidentally, my rep is also low, but I see it as a 'thank-you-for-your-interest; come back again'
I agree with this. I upvote comments because I think it encourages people when they see that the author is taking time to come back and read and interact with them.
That may have nothing to do with you though...there have been times that I've left comments but not upvoted in an attempt to let my SP rebuild. I tend to be the Crazy Commenter Lady and when I've upvoted every post I commented on, I killed my SP so dead that my vote was literally worth .0001 with no end in sight to recovering it. (The only reason I'm back to voting now is that a friend delegated some of their SP.)
So that puts folks like me into a quandary: do I still comment to show appreciation, even though I'm not voting to let my SP recover? Or do I leave without saying anything lest I offend the author by not voting? Do I comment but say "sorry I can't vote right now"?
I know exactly what you mean @mtnmeadowmomma... Mondays is certainly my 'busiest day' on steemit.
Often I sort of bookmark posts and go back another day to make sure I have recharged 😆 to comment and vote, especially if I notice that the author hasn't had many upvotes ...
I am not sure what the 'unwritten protocol' is, but, yes, I think it's good to say 'sorry I can't vote right now'. Hopefully the reader will remember to go back to support the author with an upvote ... I think we have around 20 votes or so a day, don't we ?
I understand that the upvotes help the author gain 'author rewards'... If the reader just writes the comment, only s/he gains an author reward from that although the intention was to support the author of the post ...
As I explained before my vote is not worth much, but I believe a lot of grains of sand will eventually add up to a dune 😆
@cryptocariad I've been doing the same thing the past couple weeks, hitting the #needleworkmonday posts over the course of a few days so I don't kill my SP on Monday :))) too many wonderful things to vote on!!
@apanamamana thanks for the link for the slider! That's awesome there's another way to get it!
@metzli when I first came here I was in facebook mode and without reading the whole FAQ's I happily voted like I was Oprah yelling "You get a vote, and you get a vote, EVERYBODY gets a vote!" Yeah, not a good strategy🤦🏻♀️
https://www.steemworld.org/@cryptocariad
Here is your SP wheel. It seems to me that if you let your SP get back to 100, your vote will will be worth 2-3 pennies, like mine.
Working towards it @metzli ... currently, I have to wait for two days without upvoting to have full power !! just in time for Monday :)
Were you able to wait? 😂😂
Err... not really @metzli
Would be nice to be able to bookmark properly some articles to read at a later date, but those biscuits looked too good not to upvote straightaway 😆
May have to upvote fewer comments tomorrow to have enough 'power' just to upvote some posts... not bad really... and better than Facebook...
Check out Tamper Monkey and get the vote slider at any level. It is what I use (as a plankton). You don't get the slider until you're a minnow. This post tells you how to get it. It's pretty amazing and lets you upvote your comments at a smaller than 100% amount.
Thanks, @apanamamama!
Apparently you now have to go to @steem-plus because the one you suggest is out of date ... I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds good and it would certainly allow more votes - though 'being a rebel and that' I quite like giving everyone the same amount of vote' 😊
It is out of date, but you still can follow the directions. It doesn't work with microsoft edge but should work with the other browsers out there. I now use firefox and it's great.
Thanks @apanamamama. I use google chrome... :)
Ahhh, I don’t like giving out my keys!!
Lol, I don’t really like letting anyone drive my car either 😂😂😂
It is a program that changes the script for steemit. No need to give out your keys.
I’m looking at it... it reminds me how much I still have left to learn.
Well if it’s my post, please leave that comment!
We are also building community and comments help that. Later when all our accounts are worth more, we’ll be happy to leave those crypto-pennies along with or comments.
I drew my SP back to zero when I first started, before @fishyculture taught me to check my power. It took me 5 days to get my power back.
I was like that on Facebook when I used it too, leaving little thumbs up everywhere.
Your efforts are usually worth an upvote - we just don’t always have the SP to leave them.
I don’t leave upvotes after my power is below 90. I love the steemit community and the people in it - but I’m investing my time and turning it into crypto pennies. If im not making crypto pennies with my upvotes, then I just leave comments - which is like leaving my time - which I hope is seen as encouragement.
'Although the size of my curation rewards are small, they are intensely bigger than any interest rate I have ever received from any bank.'
Lol :)
I still try to gain the natural way without buy-up-surgery, hopefully the trend of buy much receive much ain't the only road to success in here...
I hope it’s not the only road to success.
But if I’m going to go for a walk, I’m gonna put my walking shoes on.
Heels will get me there too - but walking shoes...
Many roads lead to Rome. Even more lead somewhere else...
❤️❤️Hey that’s a great one.
We aren’t all going the same place.
;)
This is a good idea in some ways. I usually upvote my comments at a small percentage, but visiting their blog and finding a post you like and there upvoting it is a good idea! Sometimes I have lots of comments and it would take a long time to visit. Most of the time, my commenters are people I visit anyway. :) If you are a redfish still and don't have a slide voter, you can download a script that enables you to have it. This post talks all about it. It's great and enables me to at least give a tiny upvote to a handful of pepole. ;)
Sometimes it does take me a long time to circle back. Today will probably be one of those days... I enjoy it though :)
I'm a comment upvoter, but I do have a bigger vote - I lease delegated steem through @minnowbooster for that purpose. I get 100 sp every so often and I think that is better than powering up directly. I've been doing this since about 2 months here and I don't think I will stop.
I get your point and I think you are right about the curation reward. If you are not there already - check out the curation league by @abh12345. He's got good people over there and it helps a lot to see how you are doing and to get tips from others. There are some good ideas you might not think of otherwise.
Are you going to the SD meetup tomorrow? @mariannewest is organizing it and @bxlphabet is going. I will look on from Thailand :)
I look forward to the slider...
Thanks for commenting, I’m not in SoCal this time :(
I don't get many comments on my posts and it seems easy to say thank you for a comment by upvoting the comment especially when I like it.... But definitely a point of view to consider....
I seemed to get a lot more comments on this one than usual 😛
When I was participating in 5 minute freewrites, there was a bigger audience but it came with a heavy workload.
You've got some visiting to do huh? haha....
As for FreeWrite... I am still working on my Time Management...Slowly getting there..
Have a great week @metzli
Way to work smarter, not harder! Thanks for the tip.
You're very welcome :)
