GOODBYE CRUEL STEEMIT!
FAREWELL, IT WAS NICE WHILE IT LASTED!
I'm sure those phrases are becoming familiar to some of us here on steemit. Many are saying such things, and many more are thinking them. Maybe you are thinking them. Maybe I am.
Has steemit just become a passing fad that was fun while it lasted, and that's about it?
Personally, though things are being implemented all the time to make steemit a better community and a more user friendly platform, it is also not exactly what it once was.
I'm sure that many of the older users who have at least been here for a few months realize this fact.
Lately, steemit has been looking a lot like this:
We are beginning to have a user retention problem. If this situation is not properly handled, the trend will continue. If the trend continues, steemit will suffer. Growth is necessary for longevity, and many of us are already invested in steemit long-term.
I believe that unrealistic ideas about what steemit offers are beginning to affect the length of time that users will spend attempting to "succeed" on steemit.
This illustration is provided to put things in perspective.
Let's face it, unrealistic goals and expectations almost always lead to disappointment.
When something doesn't live up to the expectations, it can get frustrating, (even if the expectations weren't realistic.) For a while now, the changing dynamics of the platform have lead to a distortion of what steemit is capable of. When the value of steem is worth a fraction of what it once was, the potential value of your payouts are only a fraction of what they once were too.
THE EXPECTATIONS OF OPTIMISTIC NEWCOMERS
Easy street here I come!
It seems that almost everything in life requires some seriously hard work for most people. Basically, unless you are willing to bust your butt in an attempt to get what you want, you most likely will never get it. If steemit could make everyone rich who happened to encounter it, we'd all already be rich. Simply put, there is no easy street, and anything that may be considered to be easy street by one person may only work for that one person. If there was a real Fountain of Youth or Money Tree, we'd all already be there.
I heard I can make $10,000 in two hours.
Versions of that story were once true thanks to steemit. Perhaps (I said perhaps) that may be one day be the case again, but now is just not that time.
I can best demonstrate this fact by using this graph from this recent post by @ontofractal.
https://img1.steemit.com/0x0/https://ipfs.pics/ipfs/QmWFGDtsL5KN7bmUSAtvGSxrTrzQd6rrVkoxAUGMDfa6bx
The total payout for was October 11th was $16828, and last weeks average was $15254.
When we compare that to peak payout of $220386 around July 17th, there is obviously a huge difference in the potential that a user can make.
The first @dollarvigilante post paid out a total of $15,967.63 even with 13 flags on the post. To get that kind of payout these days, you would need to be the only author getting any payout all day.
Though stories like the one about how @dollarvigilante had a post that made $15,000 in 12 hours are true... they do not represent an accurate depiction of the opportunity that someone has on steemit at the current time. In fact, it only happened that way for him because of who he was and the name that he had already made for himself. The average user joining steemit these days has no followers or "name" that they have made for themselves.
Anyone hoping to make thousands within days of joining steemit will be disappointed. If that's the goal, they will not succeed.
I'm gonna be so rich.
This mentality will not work for the reasons shared above. The only real way to get rich on steemit these days is to live in a very poor country and require very little to cover any expenses. Then, the payouts from your posts might make a big enough difference to be considered "rich."
I am certainly not complaining about a lack of payouts from steemit. All it provides and all of you have been a huge encouragement and blessing to my family!
Make $$$ posting??
Yep. That's the whole draw for most people. Perhaps my voice, thoughts, and contributions will be worth something here. Though there is no guarantee, there is that possibility. You will never know if you do not try, and you will never have no chance to succeed unless you quit.
THE CLAIMS OF THE DISGRUNTED AND DISAPPOINTED
It's a scam! It's a ponzi scheme!
Well folks, steemit is neither a scam nor a ponzi scheme. People are free to join for free and have no obligation to ever pay anything to use this platform. The option and opportunity to buy steem does exist, but this option should be treated as an investment. Any investment has the possibility of either gaining or losing value, and steem is no different. As with almost anything here, there is no guarantee. To use this platform requires no more than a little of your time, and if getting no financial return on your investment of time makes steemit a scam to you, then please be aware that red rights, stop signs, checkout lines, sports games, and television are all way bigger scams that you will have to deal with, because they never paid you for your time either.
I'm going whale hunting!
Yeah, that's a great way to commit steemicide. Let's face it, on steemit, whales are where the real payouts come from. You may be able to scrape together a few bucks on a post without them, but you will never really get a great payout without them. When a user gets frustrated to the point of going whale hunting, they are basically biting the hand that feeds them (or the hand that they want to feed them). If you ever want the option to earn something on steemit, don't blast the whales.
The whales can do as they please with their votes, including upvoting whatever friends or other accounts that they want. If you find it dishonest to have multiple accounts, just hover your mouse pointer over the "POST" key on the "Submit a Story" page. When I do that, a tab pops up that reads Post as "papa-pepper". Obviously, the option to have multiple accounts and this safety check to make sure that a user is posting under the correct username was built into the system some time ago, perhaps even from the beginning. Those who created the platform can choose what they want to do within the platform, and if you don't like it, I'd suggest that you make a better platform and invite everyone over.
Back to FACEBOOK!
Anyone can head back to facebook if they want, or use multiple social media sites along with, or instead of, steemit. However, if posting content with no desire to potentially earn anything for it is your goal, why not just select "Decline Payout" in the "Rewards" options on the "Submit a Story" page?
Head back if you want, steemit will not force you to stay.
Like so many things, steemit has both an entrance and an exit.
My goal is to encourage others not to use the exit.
But how do we get others to make the choice to stay?
ALL USERS
1 - VOTE
No matter what your vote is worth, please search out content that you enjoy and upvote it. Votes are so encouraging, and even if they are not worth much on their own, they can help add to something greater as more votes are added to the post.
2 - DON'T FLAG WITHOUT JUST CAUSE
Many users will get in flag wars or flag content simply because they do not personally like the post. We all have the option and freedom to use flags (downvotes) in this way, but it certainly does not encourage others. If you see something that you disagree with, move on to a different post. If you really think that something should be done, leave a comment.
In cases of plagiarism or other similar activity, flags can be a good way of showing that such activity is not appropriate. However, it is often best to point out this fact first and see how the user responds. Some may just not realize that what they are doing is wrong. Let's give others a chance to learn and help them as they attempt to interact here on steemit.
3 - ENCOURAGE
Honestly, sometimes in grade school the role of "encourager" was an easy way to participate in a group project without having to do as much running around as the "go-for" (gopher), but encouragement is so beneficial in many situations. Steemit is one of those situations.
I was recently talking to @robyneggs in a private chatroom and was giving her some encouragement. She had said that it was hard sometimes to stay motivated, and I replied that I knew the feeling, and felt that way about every three or four days. Honestly, the idea of quitting runs through my head at least a couple times a week. Sure the great payouts that I sometimes get can be encouraging (how could they not be?) but your replies are too!
When someone like @englishtchrivy leaves a message like this "@papa-pepper I just wrote an article on how you can grow your own apple trees on seeds and in containers inspired by this very post!" it brings me so much joy that my post was inspirational.
When I get a message like this "Another great post from @papa-pepper! Now working on the Spanish translation..." from someone like @traducciones it lets me know that others not only appreciate what I am up to, but they are willing to invest their own time and effort to make my posts available to the international community within steemit and build up this global platform in ways that I could never do on my own.
When someone like @gringalicious leaves a reply like ""... You are so correct!... My Dad read your post and he says to keep these coming. Steem ON!" it makes me realize that whole families enjoy what I am up to here.
Basically, I've done very well, but I can still get discouraged. I can only imagine what it must feel like not doing very well on steemit. Even if your upvote isn't "worth anything", your encouragement can still be priceless.
4 - JOIN FORCES
Many initiatives like Robin Hood Whale and Project Curie have been created to act in a whale-like manner and made a real difference in post payouts. There are many ways that we can now follow what these groups are up to, and we can even program our upvotes to follow theirs by using www.streemian.com.
Group activity can be a great way to influence post payouts and encourage others.
5 - RESTEEM
We all have the option now to resteem posts. If you find one that you like that is not getting noticed, resteem it if you want and get that post a little more publicity. It's free, and it is also so encouraging for the author to see others resteeming their posts.
6 - PROMOTE
This option is somewhat similar to resteem, but it will cost you at least something to attempt to get more attention for another user's post. For the most encouragement possible, you may want to notify the author that you promoted their post, otherwise they may never know. If the promotion leads to an increased payout, it'll be encouraging either way, whether they know or not, but there is no guarantee of a better payout when promoting.
7 - NAME DROP
When you mention another user in your post, it's free publicity for them. If they notice it or hear about it, it can be very encouraging. I remember one morning as I was going through my feed, I saw my name mentioned four times, and a few of the mentions were even in the post titles. Now that's encouraging!
Name dropping is another free was to encourage others. Someone recently mentioned that another user had dropped my name in her post. Not only did this lead to me upvoting the post (which most likely would not have happened as I was not following the one who mentioned me) it also encouraged me when I read it (which also would not have happened).
8 - LINK POSTS
A great way to encourage someone else is to link on of their posts. I once did a post on Goji Berries and linked a post from @kepo777 who had also posted about Goji Berries. He was encouraged! This method is also free, so why not use it when it is applicable.
The @linkback-bot-v0 created by @ontofractal will even tip off the original author so that they do not miss the posts that linked their post in them!
9 - YOUR NAME IN LIGHTS
To spotlight another user and expose their work and their name to all of your followers is another common method. I have not personally done this yet, but it is on my to-do list and I already have the user selected. I'll have to do that soon for him.
10 - GUEST AUTHOR
Many users with more attention will post an article for a lesser known user, and allow them to "guest author" the post. The post will be written by one user and posted by another, and usually the "poster" will give the STEEM and SBD to the "author" for their efforts. This can get the guest author a larger payout than they would on their own and gets their username more exposure too.
11 - BRAINSTORM
The more minds that are thinking about how to solve problems and make steemit better, the better. Think about creative and practical ways to benefit this platform and its users and share those ideas with others. One idea I had was OPERATION TRANSLATION. See what you can think of and try to get others on board.
Those were just some of the things that we can all be doing.
Add your ideas in the comments below if you want.
DEVELOPERS
1 - CLEAR BUTTON SAFETY CHECK
A simple change to the "CLEAR" button on the "Submit a Story" page would be a huge improvement. If an additional tab popped up that asked "Are you sure that you want to clear?" it would save users from accidentally erasing their work.
Yes, I know that we can type our posts in another program and then copy them to the "Submit a Story" page, but this simple tweak would make the user experience so much better and eliminate unnecessary frustration due to lost work.
Let's make it a little easier for all users.
2 - RESTEEM UNSTEEM
What can a user do when they accidentally resteem another post? Nothing, yet. Can we please get an option to "unsteem" posts that we have accidentally resteemed? Twice now I have accidentally resteemed posts that I was only trying to upvote from my mobile device. I don't want to have to stop interacting and upvoting just because I am away from my computer...
I think that this option would be a huge benefit to the platform when trying to make "resteeming" all that it can be.
3 - SEPARATE PERSONAL BLOG FROM RESTEEMED POSTS
Many would be resteeming a lot more if it wouldn't clutter their own blog. A user's blog should be able to be dedicated to posts from the user. The resteemed posts should show up elsewhere.
The two types of quitters on steemit.
Perhaps there are more varieties, but these two immediately come to mind.
MR. "NO MORE WHALE LOVE"
I don't really like this guy, and I don't have any advice for others on how to get him to stay on steemit. Basically, at some point in his history on steemit, he got a lot of whale love. Now, however, for one reason or another, he is no longer getting the same amount of whale love that he had previously grown accustomed to.
Unless the whales come back to him, he will leave us all.
I'm not completely sure that this is the type of user that we want around anyway. Basically, the problem is his lack of gratitude. Would it have been better to never get any whale love? NO. Yet, he can't appreciate what he once had, and instead grows frustrated about what he is no longer getting.
I've had times of more whale love and less whale love. Whale love is pleasant and encouraging, and a lack of it is, well, not. However, I'm grateful to have gotten some whale love in the first place, whether or not they ever give me any more.
Mr. "NEVER GOT ANY WHALE LOVE"
This is the type of guy that we want to encourage. He's never reached his full potential yet, and we don't want him to quit before he really succeeds. A lot of various methods are currently being used to notice guys like this and encourage them in their efforts.
Somehow, we want this user to produce high-quality original work until he does get noticed rather than having him grow disgruntled and commit steemicide. Hopefully, we can become an even more encouraging and helpful community and allow this type of user to reach his full potential.
Above all, I want to avoid this picture becoming reality.
We all have roles that we can play as we attempt to make steemit all that we can. Let's produce the best posts that we can and encourage and upvote one another along the way!

Myopia is a common human malady. We often thing that something that happens must be normative, even when it's exceptional. Then our expectations can be according to what we want rather than sound reason.
The fact is, this very post can be worth 10k. How?
Convert it to SP and let it sit. It gathers interest over time, which compounds. The price of Steem is abysmal right now. For some that's a deal breaker or cause for depression. Those who understand markets tend to see it as an opportunity, if they've tracked Steemit and think it's going to do well over the long haul.
With this in mind, if your $75 payout for this article is invested in Steem, you'll have roughly 190 or so Steem to power up. That 190 not only gets interest, but if Steem goes up to $10 one day, it's suddenly worth over $1,900 USD. With compounding interest, if that's two years down the road, it could be $5k.
If you're in it now to get good financial returns in the short-term, you're going to have to invest a lot of time and probably buy some Steem to power up. For me, every article I write is an investment in my long-term goals with Steemit. I see it as a future payout.
Compounding interest - if you don't understand it's power, you need to study it. Many a poor young man with vision retired comfortably with this simple tool in his arsenal.
Don't be myopic. Plan for the future.
I could not have said that better myself.
Really, I couldn't have.
Thanks @anotherjoe.
What a wonderful post this is to read and what a amazing fact that I saw myself in many of your words . :D One moment you are happy and the next you can cry. of course, I had some whale love in the past and it made me feel very happy seeing that I am saving my money for a new laptop and a drawing tablet but things have changed for us all including me. I get tons of likes but the money flow really dropped. Now I am at that point for at least 2 weeks and I had a choice.... Sit down and cry my eyes out and feel very sorry for myself and run away from Steemit as fast as I could OR... And this is the path I picked... I stay and enjoy the time I have here with like minded, share my drawings and sometimes a written post and see the fact that I get votes! YES VOTES matter a whole lot. I had one post with over 225 votes but did not make a dollar on it. Sour? A bit, I will not lie BUT 225 votes means I posted something that others liked meaning I felt really proud of the drawing that I made and is that not what really matters? Yes, money comes in handy, we all need it to build a life. But I rather smile and feel proud than get votes for money. :D This is my 2 cents on this amazing post!
It's a bit confusing that 225 votes would result in such a small reward. When we have a million users, will we have just a few more whales, meaning 10k upvotes and only a few dimes in the wallet? I can see this sort of trajectory, which would be a death knell. But I believe that this will be fixed. It has to.
Yeah, votes are not always worth very much.
I have a very high reputation and a lot of followers, but my Steem Power has only been worth 1 cent per full power upvote, at most, based on what I have seen.
When I vote "too much" and decrease my power, it is not even worth a cent.
One whale vote can be worth hundreds of other votes, and that's just the way that it is.
People keep thinking about cents. While they do matter, the real metric is STEEM. Especially if people chose to get their reward in 100% SP. But the thing is you have 4k SP. It is not all that much, but you do your part with voting.
We have a problem when people with 50k+ sp abstain from voting, which means less impact on where rewards go.
Well said.
yes well said @xanot, you have totally understood the dilema, we all need to get more SP to increase the value of your upvotes for others. And others for your posts. Two ways. invest like me and buy minimum 3000 or be more patient and work until you have as rewards for your effort !! So good posts or good money is what this site needs to survive.SP ! SP and more SP people !! )))
Very concise explanation!
I agree but it is what it is. There is not much I can change about it! :D
Here is the post btw. 230 votes :D It still made me happy.
https://steemit.com/art/@poeticsnake/doodle-portrait-2-original-art-by-poeticsnake
Incredibly well said @poeticsnake.
Whether you get the desired payouts or not, you have made quite a name for yourself already!
Thanks for your reply and keep it up!
You should totally do some #nameinlights frankly anyone with more than 100 followers should. That's the point of the challenge, to recognize one of your followers about once a week if possible.
https://steemit.com/created/nameinlights
It's a great way of reminding your followers that you're watching them too!
Thanks for mentioning it! I've always had a special place in my heart for it.
You know, I've never thought about doing this and I certainly have the follower count that I could make a real difference for some of my followers. I think I will go look through the list and find someone who is posting good stuff but is getting totally ignored. Thanks for saying this, I am actually feeling excited to make one of these posts.
Great attitude.
I'm looking forward to see who you expose us to!
Agreed 1000%! Excellent attitude!
Man, 1000%?!?!?!
I didn't realize that was an option, awesome!
I prefer to use links rather than re-steeming, however the re-steem is more akin to Facebook Shares which do seem popular. That is what will keep those that have less new material to post.
I would personally use resteem a lot more if it did not clutter by blog history.
Thanks for chiming in @kyusho!
Resteem posts are annoying because are making a mess in my homepage (feed). I would prefer separate tag or folder.
I completely agree.
I'm not looking to flood others by resteeming, but I would do it a lot more if it did not fill up my blog page.
Still wish that I could get rid of the accidental ones too, they look even more out of place.
That is a great idea, I think I will have to do something like that with my followers. Thanks for the eye opener @williambanks
full $teem ahead
@streetstyle
Do it @streetstyle, expose us to someone who you enjoy but mostly goes unnoticed.
@papa-pepper see reply to @williambanks comment thanks my friend.
Will do, thanks!
I'm excited to see who you bring to our attention!
@williambanks So I tried picking some random follower, checked out their account and had to pass, then did it a few more times and stopped searching until I finish part 2 of my last post.... been a little brain drained but its starting to flow again. Once I do then I will go back to that. I have been trying though.
full $teem ahead
Try @logic and @gamerholic they look like they could use more attention.
Yeah, I should have mentioned you and given you credit for the idea too, but at least your comment is at the top.
I'll try to get that out within a week, and thanks again for the excellent idea @williambanks!
You're welcome and I don't care about the credit, just that folks give it a try.
I know, but I try to give it where it is due.
Thanks!
upvoted, promoted, resteemed
Wow, somehow thank you seems so small in comparison.
Thanks.
Great post and encouraging way of helping others to help others :)
Thanks @sgnsteems.
Thanks @inertia for sharing. Great post. I'd say in my case, time got the best of me. I never meant to quit but life got in the way. Maybe I didn't officially quit though, I do glance at it often. So, there is hope 😉
Please, stop by any time and add what you like!
You are always welcome on steemit!
This is a fantastic and comprehensive post. Grate suggestions. I try to resteemed as much as possible and also cross promote to twitter :)
Excellent @goldmatters.
It is good be be sharing what is happening here on steemit with people on other platforms on the internet!
:) doing my best!
Good points.....instead of concentrating on the money to be made, we should be concentrating and telling others about the fact that there is no censorship. That what the author posts could actually get seen instead of being ghosted. Thanks
Absolutely, great insight into what the platform really offers.
We are pretty happy so far :-) Thanks for the encouragement.
So are we, no unrealistic goals and everything else is exceptional.
Thanks @exploretraveler!
source
Bahaha!
But I heard that the water was great!
Oh it is!, Jump on in! :)
virtualgrowth where do you get the feather pen
here
Nice, and so helpful!
Way to help build it up!
@englishtchrivy has the same type of "signature" but with a graffiti artist.
@papa-pepper it was @virtualgrowth who taught me where to get that .
I love the boy's face so I took this one.
@virtualgrowth I gave you a thank you shout out on this post but I guess it didn't reach you but hey THANK YOU again!
Nice teamwork.
Always excellent to see people helping one another!
@virtualgrowth the funniest comment I saw here thank you for the giggles :)
wow, that was how I felt at first, really the information is true.
I'm trying to get friends to join the page, but I worry how they'll feel to see that all its contents are valued.
Agreed, thanks.
Ah ha ha.. I'm not the only accidental resteemer.
Keep fighting, bro.
Have the same situation, i was drunk one time and missed on my phone from vote to resteem :)
Exactly what happen. Not the drunk part. The phone part. :-)
Me too, completely sober, but I had a phone....
Stupid smart phone.
Not that the posts aren't worthy of an upvote, they just were not something that I definitely wanted all of my followers to see.
Agree and push your own post lower down even. :-)
Yeah, not too good...
Yeah, I call it "Accidental Advertising"
As someone who is brand new, I am totally confused. I came here looking for a viable alternative to FB, not as some source of minimal effort income generation so I found the viewpoints presented in your article quite interesting.
Steemit is a great alternative to Facebook, but there is also a potential financial benefit to posting on steemit, which is the main reason that many join.
The community here is amazing, and if you're looking for a great platform where you can interact with others and maybe learn a few things, you've found it.
Welcome to the community @stevespring and sorry to have confused you.
You will be fine, just give it a go and seriously try and find a mentor ! ! !
Learning things by trial and error is a real downer, better to try and find a helpful mentor . . .
Nice advice @crok!
Way to encourage with solid, practical advice!
We are still in beta and cryptos go up and down non stop. This platform is the best thing since the internet and ice cream.
dont forget jalapeño cheetos and coconut water
Agreed on both of those, they are excellent, but steemit is better!
Man, I don't know if I could think a better thing here than steemit.
Hold on steemit ;)
An exciting, electrifying, bumpy rides!
That's steemit!
While some stuff in my life is a bit draining on my time and resources that could be used better in posting to Steemit, some of them are paying off.
Besides, a lot of things are happening behind the scenes for me, and what drives me crazy is that I probably should post about them, but can't.
As for love, I would prefer commenter love. While whale love is more profitable there is no feedback. And lack of feedback from people is something which is driving anxiety. 4 out of 5 of my last posts fared really well, including one that had the highest payout that I've ever received. Besides if that payout was back when the STEEM price was ~$3 instead of $0.4, that payout would have been closer to $1000. But the thing is, since most of reward comes in form of STEEM POWER, potentially it did get you that much. Especially if you chose the 100% SP option. Unfortunately, right now it is something that I can't afford.
Hmm, maybe I should ask my followers what should I do?
The comment love often does trump the whale love.
Also, best of wishes as you consider how to proceed.
I've changed my "game plan" multiple times already, and who knows what the future holds.
Just wrote a post about that. I think that it is also something of changing the game plan. But I wasn't as prolific enough about those as you did. Perhaps it is time to change that. :-)
Perhaps, and nice job gaining over 200 followers too!
Thanks! Some of the insight from your posts helped quite a bit!
That's what I put it there for!
Thanks!
Refreshing
Glad you think so!
Great post. Very encouraging and stuff information.
Thanks for that!
I try to encourage.
great post papa!!! love the graphics
Thanks, I do all my own thinking, artwork, and stunts!!!
Hi and thanks for posting all this issues in plain and direct English. I agree with, well, everything that you've said.
What I don't understand - and it is not up to you or your post - is the lack of empathy from Gods of Steemitverse for average users.
This issue about reclaiming back our personal blog shows it well. It was requested myriads of times and nothing. Not one word. Nada!
Yet, yesterday we've got tons of minor and completely insignificant UI changes?
Are they mocking us? Or just ignoring?
Anyways, keep the positive attitude. It is not easy, though...
I think that different people have different points of view, and like all of us, the developers have to prioritize.
They have an even more committed interest in the success of steemit than we do, and we are part of what will add to the success.
Things just take time, I do not think that they would ever intentionally mock us, so be patient...
Many share your concerns though, so thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Great post. I definitely think that the community is the main advantage to steemit right now. The beautiful thing is that so many of the comments are positive, and many are even constructive. So when we tell people about the platform, that needs to be a part of our pitch. Spending time in a positive environment away from trolls is so important, and so much more psychologically healthy.
Yes, well said!
The overall positive atmosphere and encouragement here is amazing!
This is the best post i've seen today, thank you @papa-pepper! One thing must be clear: steemit is not place for everybody
Thank you for that great compliment!
A lot of thought and work went into this, so I am glad that people like you have enjoyed it.
Thanks again @dumar022.
2 - DON'T FLAG WITHOUT JUST CAUSE
Yeah, a simple message that needs to be repeated often.
Hey @stellabelle - I was going to do an update post on Operation Translation and mention that you allow translations of your posts too, plus I'll link your original posts and their translations so far, but I was wondering if you wanted to mention anything specific about this opportunity and your thoughts on it.
I could include a quote from you in the post if you wanted me to.
Thanks, and keep it up!
INCLUDE A QUOTE! Sure why not! Yeah, do an explanation post......you can provide my images too if you want.
Posted it some hours ago, and linked almost all your originals and links, plus I showed your "Allow Translations" image.
So far, a couple hundred people have seen it, and things are going well!
Also, 1399 followers?
You're a beast!
Oops. I finally clicked "follow"
1400 followers now!
Congratulations @stellabelle on reaching such an amazing milestone!
its down to 1399 again.....ha ha ! one never knows.....I don't worry about followers.
When I made it to 666 followers last night @teamsteem offered to unfollow to change it for me.
I told him if he did that, it would just happen again the next time someone followed...
I'm a few over it now!
jeez. that is a lot. thanks for pointing it out.
No problem, I just happened to notice.
i actually had no idea.
Very good post! It's much better than some of the posts that are only complaints, you posted some concrete and doable actions that should help. I read somewhere, probably on Steemit, though I have forgotten where exactly but it was a simple piece of advice: "If you are sharing what you love, it really shouldn't matter if you get heaps of votes and Steem on it, you should just be posting for yourself and your audience."
Yes, on Steemit, the money is a big thing but you should really do your best to make it a small thing in the total of your reasons for sharing and blogging.
That is a great last sentence @mweich!
I certainly do try to accomplish the following:
The more each of us do those things, the better steemit will become, and the better the general atmosphere of this platform will be too!
I upvote , commented on @qkla
Guess what he downvoted me. What a loser!
Good Bye Loser!!! Watch out for this guy. He don't deserve it.
I'll keep my eyes open.
Great post.
People that come to Steemit to make money leave when they don't, and feel deceived, and justifiably so.
Invite people for the content. Steemit has the best content. Users that come for great content, will be satisfied, and the money will be just gravy.
(See my post from yesterday about changing Steemit sales motto)
The content that steemit pulls out of people is amazing.
A lot of what I have produced would have never been accomplished without the encouragement that steemit gave me.
I want to be part of this community, I'm in it for the long haul. I'm powering up with my author rewards so I can have an impact on my curation work. Well said, you took my seed thoughts on a reply to a whiner shut up post and grew them into a lovely apple tree. I am learning new skills, html, markup, brushing up on my non extent grammar skills too! It's all good on my side working with Steemit and community!
Yeah, I've gained a lot of skills here too, and refined some rusty ones.
There is only so much whining that anyone can take, and a platform that only offers that will soon die!
Thanks @reddust!
Great post
Encouraging aswell
I really hope steemit doesn't die off
I'm glad that you think so and that it encouraged you.
Thanks for letting me know!
As Donald Trump says: "You just don't have the S-T-A-M-I-N-A!" Check out my 5000th post today! Steemit Stamina Power! FULL STEEM AHEAD!! Ha ha!
https://steemit.com/life/@mindhunter/5000th-steemit-post-i-am-as-immoveable-as-the-himalayas-my-spirit-is-everywhere-but-nowhere-i-am-a-creation-of-now-i-follow-no
Congrats on post 5000 @mindhunter!
I knew that you were racing up there!
Every day a mad Scotsman a Steem racin' @papa-pepper - lovely balanced article by the way - I do like a wee bit of whale prodding from time to time to get them to release all that lovely SP! "Stay back Captain....she's gonna blow!" Love to all in Wisconsin!
You can race me @mindhunter, but I may not run....
...but this is not a run @papa-pepper - this is a full on Steemit marathon - we both run for the soul of Steemit itself - see ya at the next water station ;)
@papa-pepper thanks for giving me my morning reading, I was hooked on this one. You still channel the same energy that drew me to Steemit 3 months ago: Great community, writing and sharing to grow, and the potential for financial reward for doing so. Before financial rewards were even a thing on social media, those other aspects were what I wanted in a network.
Steemit has given me countless hours of material to pour over, from a butt ton of interesting people scattered across my country and world, and I love that I can earn crypto to give back to them, especially since I'm not rich or anything IRL. I try to encourage the poet in all of us, and for me the real value is seeing a lot of the poetry slam contestants continue to develop great poetry and earn more and more for that art. Not gonna lie, I get a little high when I see several Slam Post entries earning rewards from the community at large.
I think we're aligned on how important comments and dialogue is to encouraging the community. I will never deny that a big payout is exciting and definitely encouraging, but the truth is that I had hid myself away for so long that I'm more ecstatic about the followers that genuinely like my work (minnow through whale, we're all just people). I never thought I would really write ever again.
We really should get together next time I'm in Wisconsin, like December I think
I'll be back in WI in December too, and meeting up with you in person would be awesome.
You have shared very well in your comment and I sincerely appreciate all that you are up to in your attempt to build this community and inspire others.
You've inspired me @prufarchy!
You got my resteem with your post, of course :P
Thanks @dresden!
I appreciate all of your hard work and encouragement!
Good post @papa-pepper. For me one of the problems are the bots that strike at around 30.5 minutes and add zero value $ - wise. How about 101 votes and $1.3 ? I mean at the moment this post has 162 votes for a princely $9.63 .... without a whale vote you need to get close to 1000 votes to get an hourly wage... and I take it this post took you a lot longer than one hour. My posts take on average 3 hours and then to get 0c is laughable... but the money is not the main reason I post, so I continue. I post for Steem Power only anyway.
I took three days off recently and caught up with my web development work and earned 6 times the money I have received on Steemit in 3 months... so the labor is not for the money........YET.
I'm glad that you took your break then.
There are many variables that we cannot control, and we need to evaluate our motives vs. potential benefits.
I'm glad to have you around anyway @themagnus, and thanks for stopping by to add your input!
thanks for the inspiration, I've resteemed to keep the positive message spreading. "Ask not what steem can do for you, but what you can do for steem" :) Peace
Thanks @bigsambucca!
I'm glad you are inspired, and thanks for resteeming!
I like this post!
because:
This true 100%
1000 vote for this post must be obtained...
and my numbers vote is 204.
Sorry, I just saw your post!!!!!
and don't jump my brother
We got 313 right now... any suggestions on how to get another 687?
(I won't jump)
Over 400 now...
Congrat
Thank you! it sounds true
You're welcome, and THANK YOU TOO!
I don't understand how Steemit peaked at $220386 and now it's worth about $15,000 per day to share.
Like all the money drained out? Isn't there a 2 year wait that was in place to prevent that form happening?
How does that work? I did notice my account was worth close to $1k and now is less than $300.
If everybody on steemit did everything you suggest in the post would steemit have more money to share?
I do not understand all of that either, but "STEEM" is not worth what it once was.
If I could fix that, I would...
I do not think that following my advice can fix that particular issue @solarguy.
Awesome post as always papa-pepper! Keep up the great work, this was very informative and i couldnt agree more! especially loved your little stick-man graphs , lol! Any steem i get i power up! Im here for the long haul and just did a blog about it yesterday! Heres a link if anyones interested! https://steemit.com/steemit/@karenmckersie/is-steemit-crashing-oh-the-horror-please-say-it-isnt-so
I upvoted and reblogged , people need to read more stuff like this and maybe they will stick around longer before they "abandon ship! "Thanks again!♨ 👍😉♨STEEM ON! ♨♨
A lot of people seem to enjoy my "illustrations" and I enjoy making them.
Thanks again for resteeming!
I try to inspire, encourage, and suggest practical info on how to proceed.
Yes the illustrations are great, you obviously put alot of work into your post with original content that inspires me also , and it shows! The information is easy to understand! Especially for newbies and people like me who are new to the crypto etc. Thanks for the reply! 😉
Thanks again.
why is it that i cant vote?it happens only when i make new posts as i have the option to vote.
I have no idea what the issue is there.
Try upvoting this reply...
Heres a link to a post of a guy saying this is his last post and RIP STEEMIT! ! With his reasons why! Alot of comments also have to do with the fact their upvotes dont count for anything even if they have alot of money in steem power!

Yeah, some are definitely making that choice, but not us!
Thanks for sharing!
No never! I will continue powering up all steem i recieve ! And never abandon ship! I will go down with the boat like the captain! Lol! 🛳🛥⛴🛳⛵

AND WERE STILL ON BOARD HIDEING DOWN BELLOW! LOL! ⛴🛳🛥👍
Full steem ahead?
It is just a new paradigm that is still in it's infancy, the more quick riches folks that leave the better the content will be.
And as it is the first blockchain social network... and they keep improving it, with benefits, it will succeed. It is the interface that keeps folks, look at "MySpace" compared to "Facebook"
Yeah, I am so interested to see where steemit will go in time...
TO THE MOON?
very detailed, informative feedback! Thank you @papa-pepper - whilst it is nice to make a few SBD and covert real money (hell, I have had 3 cups of coffee from steem with REAL money from steemit), hopefully, the intrinsic value of the community will rise again
Yeah, there is more to get out of steemit that money, and you'd better be comfortable with that fact, especially when the money does not come!
I've already bought a few meals, tanks of gas, and a few farm animals because of steemit!
What a blessing!
Thanks for this great post. I´m supporting each of your proposals. I hope many will read this article. Resteemed!
Wow, a lot of people are resteeming this.
Thanks so much @shaka for that encouragement!
I hope many will apply some of the suggestions that I have made.

Thanks!
I would have no idea about things like that without people like you.
excellent post. i agree there is a problem with user retention. i think there are 2 main issues, users not knowing what to do when they get here and yes, seeing others get rich while they get nothing. i wrote a post with suggestions but it didnt get much following, which sort of highlights the problem in itself lol.....

Cool, I'll go check it out.
Personally, I just try to encourage people like crazy to increase the optimism.

As an un-whale-loved newbie this has been a helpful post.
At the moment I'm just having fun coming up with original (aka weird) stuff to post, just for the hell of it.
I was never going to get rich here, but at least I'm not being blasted by advertising, and I get to learn a thing or two and meet nice people.
So thanks @papa-pepper ;-)
Check out my posts on STEEMICIDE and the STEEMIT LOTTERY.
Those have been very helpful to others too.
hehee already done :-)
Nice.
Hard work and consistency. That's it. Be honest along the way too and put your best shit.
Expecting things to be easy = disappointment galore.
Nice closing line.
Great post. I took a little break and came back and definitely noticed less payouts but it hasn't deterred me from posting. I actually enjoyed posting here so I will continue posting content when I get inspired to do so. :) I also use many other sites where I get $0 for posting on them, as you said. XD
That's the right attitude.
WE have an opportunity here, and that is more that most give us!
