RE: Weekly Steem Stats Report - Monday, January 14, 2019

Hi

Second point is this: There is a product being developed by Fidelity Investments that would provide “offline cold storage” for exchanges. It’s called Fidelity Digital Assets and it’s a sophisticated version of cold storage that could allow exchanges to hold cryptocurrency in wallets not accessible by webpage hackers. I read the article recently and if it interests you I will dig up the reference. This form of cold storage on an exchange would give equal or potentially better protection to your funds, since it would be under constant surveillance. Fidelity created the company, recruited a former Goldman Sachs VP to run it and the entity currently has I think 100 employees, so it’s a serious development. It’s easy to see why moving Steem out of the Steem wallet might seem less safe, but I would like to raise two unrelated but pertinent points. I read @therealwolfs post replying to @neds post and some of the comments suggested that a future Hard Fork might somehow remove the Steem from some current whales. So if that is possible this could be a move to protect that stake or it could be completely unrelated.

Sort:

Here’s the highlights of the article; Fidelity Investments... is launching a new company aimed at financial institutions that want to trade and store digital assets....The company will be named Fidelity Digital Assets, and it will offer offline cold storage for digital currency, described in offerings as-offline, vaulted deep-cold storage. The new company Fidelity Digital Assets is already said to employ over 100 people, and is reportedly being led by Tom Jessup, formerly managing Director at Goldman Sachs. You can read more here;

My notation: I think this is also potentially valuable to exchanges, which can offer this service to clients who park large amounts of cryptocurrency in exchange accounts.
