I've always been a big Reddit user, I don't use it as much lately but I still try to check it from time to time. There are a few things I really miss that just doesn't work on Steemit but I wish did.
On Steemit, every interaction is tied to a reward, so everything has to have meaning and represent a certain level of quality or community value. If you spend five seconds looking at New we know that isn't the case, but it is the goal.
One thing I use Reddit for is asking questions about anything I am running into. This could be Machine Learning, Minecraft, Home Theatre, Programming, or even Home Repair. 75% of the time it works every time. I almost always get a discussion going, I may not always get the answer I'm looking for, but I can ask without fear of it not being considered something of value. I can post about something other than Travel, Food, Crypto, Steemit and get an answer as well. While Steemit has a lot people interested in those niche, a lot of other topics are like being a Red headed step child.
If I post a question as an long time Reddit user or a brand new user, I can almost always expect a response and my voice heard. This is largely due to the communities developed by the subreddits with dedicated moderators and strict on topic rules. I really hope when Steemit Inc releases communities, it helps this sort of interaction thrive. The idea that every post/comment has a reward attached to it and is weighed against it makes this type of interaction virtually impossible.
Can you imagine the response if I posted something like this on Steemit?
First off, it would probably get $1-50 post reward, but not a single person who have a clue what I am talking about nor would I get an answer.
This brings me to another thing I miss about Reddit. If I asked this question, not only would I not have to worry about people not considering it valuable to the platform, I'd likely get 1-50 responses and a have a good discussion going with people interested in the niche (Minecraft) I am talking about. This is partially due to the fact Steemit is still young, but it also is because it is very focused on certain topics that are rewarded by whales and people with higher votes, which tends to direct the type of conversations that go on here.
The last thing, and the one that gave me the idea of this post is my favorite subreddit /r/shittyreactiongifs. This subreddit is a bit stupid and many times fails to deliver, but when it does it is something wonderful.
The subreddit is the hardcore and more complex version of MRW (My reaction when). MRW is a gif that is an expression of some reaction to something in life. A lot of times they are dumb, but many are funny.
Some examples from /r/myreactionwhen front page today
MRW Zuckerberg says he's giving away his money ... some day
MRW My son tries to talk to me about Minecraft
MRW I licked a 9v battery and got a
These can be funny at times, but /r/shittyreactiongifs takes it to a whole new level. They are more like a visual pun, and damn it, I love puns.
Some recent front page /r/shittyreactiongifs posts today
MRW I'm watching a public execution but the axeman can't figure out where to strike the prisoner, and is looking to me for a hint.
MRW The porn I'm watching takes a weird turn but I'm too invested to look away
MRW I talk to a cute girl but find out she's best friends with my ex
I am really excited to see what #Communities brings to Steemit, and really hopes it encourages more of these types of engagement. I think there is a lot of value to them, even if it isn't financial.
PS: Obviously I didn't draw the logo and it is property of Reddit

I am extremely excited for the communities feature, much more than anything else on the Steem roadmap. I was really disappointed that they can't even provide a vague idea of when it will be ready though.
Even just give us a quarter in the year - is it Q2, or Q4 of 2018? That makes a huge difference and if they can't even predict to that level with 3 months of leeway it's concerning.
I am not really looking forward to that. User will post, read and live in their community bubble.
We will have a huge crypto community.. And lots of empty ones around

You can always decline a payout if you are making a simple post that is just a question or something similar, I don't think anyone could say anything against that.
That being said, better categorization of the various niches would be a welcome addition to steemit.
I would love to see an active asksteemit tag where people can ask questions and the real content are in the comments and not the post.
I wonder if that would work with this community.
Reddit, i just got to know about that one now
my reaction when i fart in an elevator but luckily it was silent
Ha Ha I know exactly what you mean about the "red-headed stepchild" - I made a couple of my first posts about my favorite past-time, fishing. Nothing but crickets chirping. I could write a blog about sniffing trees and get better results.
This is a good insights. How I wish too that you can post also questions here and be seeen and answered by those knowledgeable and yet they will also give you rewards. That is pretty cool if it happens here.
This is very true. Right now this kind of discussion really only can take place in comments. Since there are no notifications built into the platform and posts grow old very fast no one seems to respond past a day or two.
I'm super curious to see how communities will make steemit evolve as well. Hopefully for the better.
reddit is good like that. I did a /r/whatisthisthing post awhile back and was solved in a few hours. (It turns out I have a WWII locker used by the Japanese Unit 100 biological warfare division.)
Communities seem like a step in the right direction as far as that goes. Being able to narrow down your search on steemit needs to be addressed.
ladies reaction when it's no shave November but they still horny
The community feature could solve like a few more problems here on Steemit. Nevertheless, it is still a great platform to showcase/write what you love to do rather than asking questions.
I think that we'll get there -- right now SteemIt is in the Medium stage (and YouTube and SoundCloud).
Here's hoping Communities gives rise to exactly those sorts of niches!
Cheers,
@dcj
MRW i go to the beach for the first time of the year
I think communities will be a huge positive for Steemit. It's so hard for me to write in the niches I most enjoy right now because there doesn't seem to be much of an audience for them here. It will be much better when we can form tighter connections in communities with likeminded people!
I remember Ned talking about communities but being new here I am not sure what he was referring to. Now you have reminded me, I have to look into it! I think with growth in users, we will see more and more interests showing up. I am interested in DIY, Thrifting, Reselling, and Cooking but there doesnt seem to be communities about these subjects here yet, but I am hopeful for the future :)
Never got into using Reddit myself, but good points about discussions and communities. I look forward to seeing Steemit improve in that area. :)
You got an upvote from the @nextvote community!
Maybe we can consider to post questions on steemit but declining the post. It could be a way.

Some users are Steemit aren't in it solely for the money, but rather just the chance to write something of worth that someone will hopefully find useful, entertaining or informative. I don't care to try attracting the whales, though it has happened to me a couple times without that intention.
Communities, though would be a great thing, to help expand Steemit into other areas and attract more users of a more diverse set of interests beyond the blockchain and cryptocurrencies. It'll eventually get there I'd wager, and I'll continue to do my own thing regardless if it's a popular topic or not here. Why? I get enjoyment out of it.
You should not complain.
You are famous.
Someone like me, yeah, I get no reaction to my posts.
You always get at least 10 comments.
Steem is to small.
How many users are on reddit?
The user base is way bigger, so there is always someone who is interested in that topic.
Here, you get most attention with crypto posts.
I thought my wife exaggerated.

Definitely a good idea for the incoming community feature. Currently Steem is just like a place where the one way interaction is happening, which is author starts a topic and the follower discuss that particular by commenting. Community might got chance to make it a two way conversation like Reddit.
I'll continue to create content even if it's not popular, I write what I want, popularity be damned. I want a more diverse group of creators, so I believe I have to be the change I want to see.
good photo I'm interested in seeing it is really amazing, thanks for sharing ...... @marzukirizki
