If you don't like flagging comment spam, do this instead!

The greatest problem with comment spam is that people unknowingly support it by upvoting it and rewarding it with money.

That means that one of the very best ways we can fight comment spam is to do it in a way that educates people to become more aware of the spam and to not reward it.

With this in mind, I have a new plan for fighting comment spam doesn't require flagging or anything as aggressive as that.

So what is my new plan?

drum roll please....

When I find a comment spammer, from now on, I will simply:

1.) Look through their comments page
2.) Find the comments that have been rewarded with five cents or more
3.) Click thru to the post that comment is on
4.) Leave a comment for the post author informing them they have rewarded comment spam and that they might want to remove the reward.

To be specific, this is the exact comment I leave on posts that have rewarded a comment spammer:

@whytewolf - @dine77 is a comment spammer and I thought you might want to know in case you want to remove the reward on his comment. :)

It's very simple, doesn't require flagging and spreads education and awareness about comment spam.

I imagine some people will reward me for letting them know, making it even more worth my while to take the time and effort to do this. Of course I'll do it with or without a reward, but I think it could be a nice thing if it happens. :)

If you see comment spam I hope you will consider giving this a try!

I would also love to hear your thoughts. What do you think of this approach?

If you think we should all do this, please resteem this post so we can spread the idea! Thank you.

So, I understand that there are people who do, just post "great post" ect. , and that it is considered bad. ... but if they upvote your post, I see no problem with it. there "nice post" or ? ,is just the same as the the plain "asskissing" comments that adds no- know value! even if it is three paragraphs long!
it is all the same ,the fake smile, the two faced ,ass kissing, brown nosing .
...lol...
Not every one is a words smith ,or highly literate. a lot of people are ESL (eng second language). some people are just being nice and trying to share that they agree! maybe they are do not have the knowledge to be witty ,to engaging in the intricacy to write,or fear being judged....none of that shit happens on this site , bite my tongue!...lol!!!
...
Sorry but as a simple minnow!
I do appreciate , even the simple "nice post" , "good job", and an upvote.

Now if the person does have a comments log w/ nothing but "great post" ,ect.and no upvotes , then I can see an issue! especially if they do it right at 1/2 hr time frame.
I read a lot of post sometimes, and I will admit that sometimes I will leave an upvote and a "good post",or "nice job" ,some times I get on a high horse and play along!
So for what it was worth that is my position!,point of view!
there was a post I read earlier today that was on this topic, and referred to the White page, and claimed that it was not a significant problem. wish I could find and link it for you. sorry tech challenged, I guess monkeys like me do not deserve this platform...we do not know how to add simple value , after all why smile at passing strangers, or be nice at all where is the profit in being nice
Maybe I should of just been rude and said "fuck you with a cactus!"
LOL.... I am sure that would not have got a good response!
lol..
I hope I added to the value of your post!
namaste!

IF they upvote you when there is value to their vote, then sure I see that as better as well, because they can only do it a few times a day. But if they upvote you with no value to the post, I don't think that cuts it.

I have a lot of experience with spammers by being both an employer and a freelancer on Upwork. I know how these people work and I've watched Upwork have to make change after change to their system, otherwise the spammers would have destroyed them. This is very serious stuff, and I know a lot of people don't get that these people are actually thieves, because they don't have the experience of seeing them in action and what they can do to destroy.

I do understand your point of view. and I agree that the problem exists.
my concern is with the fact that , people will be (are being) criticized for being simply polite. a smile as they peruse the post's so to speak .
I feel that I am now being discouraged from posting a simple compliment,I have to critique every post that I read ,or stay silent and mute! for fear of being flagged, muted,or judged as a spammer..
.Like I said I do understand! but it is kinda like taking the guns from law abiding citizens for that act of a few criminal,or taking my car because some one drove drunk...
How is that helpful? it does not stop the criminal or drunk.more police more laws more problem..I do not know how to stop evil or crime, but it does not help to hurt the simple honest every day common person
I think the circle jerking whales, and the $3000 post hurt the platform and everybody more.
I think we need to stop the bigger issues first before we start criticizing the small time scammers, that are making a dollar and excluding everyone from being able to say a simple "good job"or "great post"
This is a very complex site! very few user understand it completely, some of us hardly understand it at all(me ..lol) barely functioning here... I am one of the people that is honest enough to know that 80% of us are never going to make the big leagues, never going to Mr. Popular. ...lol... this is not a sign up guaranty to get you rich site. people are going to try and game any system... human nature. so big fish or little fish, I understand not wanting to get whale slapped!
namaste!

I think of it this way...the person who wrote the post took time to communicate with you, shouldn't we be willing to put at least one minute of time back to engage with their communication?

And to my point, especially if you feel you can't leave a quick comment anymore (which of course you should be able to do here and there) the spammers are already changing the way we have to operate, proving what a problem they are.

Not rewarding comment spammers does help and will help stop them, flagging them will also help. These actions will solve the spam issue by taking away their motive, which is the money.

I don't like the "circle jerk" so much myself, but I do see they have to motivate people to want to buy or retain STEEM. You're only going to buy $100K of STEEM (or $1K or whatever) if you know you're going to get your money back. The circle jerk makes people want to own STEEM, so while it can seem annoying, it serves a purpose, which is to make a market for the coin - a reason to own it.

I will rest on the "good post" part... I do not think we are that far off.
as for the circle jerk part, and buying steem, as anything you want value and not be like buying a new car and loosing 10% value as soon as you drive it off the lot,..lol..but cryptos are like stock, someone needs to loose for you to win,I do not buy that! I believe in sweat equity, you can produce your own value! that is what powers this platform , not the whales who had the privilege or opportunity to get in on the ground floor, they have made a killing!
when 90% wake up to the facts, the whales that are circle jerking are ripping them off worse than the "good job" spammers I bet it changes fast!
please do not get me wrong there are a lot of those whales from ground floor that do want the platform to succeed! and are putting a lot back into the platform to promote the minnows! I commend those people!
"Greed" is not "good", a maximum wage will cure inequity faster than minimum wage ever will or can.
feel free to write a post on that . I will gladly engage in the comments.
:-)
I hope you have a great day @trevorlyman.
please don not think I am being hostile or trying to fight. I hope my sense of humor come through.
Namaste!

I don't think you're being hostile but yeah we can wrap it up. Someone does not have to lose in order for you to win in stocks or crypto's. It certainly happens but it's not required. As for sweat equity, how do you think the person who invested their $100K got that money? It just came out of thin air? Someone had to work for it. And the actual value of the coin does not come from sweat equity, it comes from people putting money into the coin. Without people willing to buy the coin it would have zero valuer and there would be no possibility for sweat equity. Greed is good and a maximum wage won't help us in any way. We definitely see these things very differently! haha Oh well. Have a good day as well. Bye.

great idea! I've been noticing comment spam a bit and wondering what to do about it...

smart. i will do this next time. have a good one :)

how do i know is a comment spammer?

If they post all the time with very low effort posts like, "Great post!" and "Very nice!" and they comment like this very frequently, they are comment spamming. Of course every once in a while it's ok, but if all of their comments are like this they are just putting out as many comments as possible as fast as possible to get money.

A comment should mostly only make sense on the post you are making it on. You could say "Great post!" on every post on the site, but "How do I know a comment spammer?" works perfectly for this post only, and maybe a few others, but you get the idea. :)

Commentspam, Commentspam, Commentspam, Commentspam, Commentspam!

I upvoted you! Upvote me!
