Meat - It is a red edible meat muscle from animal, It could be from a chicken, cattle, sheep and other domesticated animal. It is high in protein and iron.

What is the Difference of Red meat and White meat?

Red Meat - contains Myoglobin and heme iron, which is highly absorbable in our body.

White Meat - like chicken, contains little or no Myoglobin

Benefits of eating Red meat

Red meat contains a whole vast of vitamins that include, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin B complexes, Iron and Zinc.

Different kind of cuts in meat

a. brisket - cut below the breast or cut from the breast
b. shank - it is a cut from the leg of the cow
c. chuck - also called seven bone steak, it is located near shoulder of the cow
d. rib - finest part from the cow. it's meat is tender and juicy
e. tenderloin -is the best cuts, it is popular in food service area.
f. sirloin - It is cut from the back of the cow


Different kinds of Meat cut vary in prices, But do you ever wonder, Why a price of steak in a supermarket, and a price of steak in a Restaurant has a huge difference. Steaks in the restaurant are highly expensive But whilst, when you buy from the butcher is relatively cheap. So, Before you go broke and hurt your wallet, let's find out.

  • When you get a steak, you go to your Butcher, - So there is only one person you are paying for, (your butcher). You are trusting your butcher what kind of cuts he will recommend. But...

  • When you go to a Restaurant, - you are paying for the chef , the waiter, the place and the butcher, plus not to mention the electricity. So there are lots of efforts and it involves many persons in a one piece of steak in your table. (and that's what you're paying for).

When the Meat is expensive, Does it mean it is of high quality?

  • Well, not really. It can be expensive due to availability of the meat (Supply and Demand), another factor is the distance and how the meat was raised and that could define the prices of a meat.

Meat tips when choosing meat

  • trust your senses - it should look good. not too red and doesn't look blackish. the fats should be pearly white.
  • meat language - prime meat - (highest quality of meat,it has more fat). select meat - (leaner, less juicy and tender)
  • buy the right cut - larger cuts for steaks and smaller cuts for stews and stir fry.
  • buy the right amount - the recommended portion is 180 - 220 gm per person
  • talk to your butcher

Frozen meat

  • Frozen meat are less cheaper compare to the chilled meat. It is the same in nutritional value and can be stored in 6 months - 1 year to consume.

another food tip for meat is " Don't buy fresh meat to freeze it, instead, Buy frozen meat to freeze it, It locks in the juice and taste of the meat. also the manner and source of how the meat was frozen is of high quality ".

  • Do not Re - freeze defrosted meat.

What is the Difference of Minced meat, a Burger patties and a lean Cut? And their secrets.....

Lean cut - The bacteria is only at the meat surface. there is not much fat or less fat in a leaner cut meat.

Minced meat - It may contains 30% fat. The bacteria is everywhere around the meat, because it was mashed up and so the bacteria are spread everywhere on the meat. it's important to have a well cooked meat to prevent the bacteria presents.

*Minced patties, (Burger) - like minced meat, they may contain fat, flavouring, starch to binds the meat. It may contain sodium nitrate too. It is also mashed up like minced meat, so therefore the bacteria is spread around the meat. a well cooked meat is advisable.


Processed Meats

  • It is affordable, taste nice and easy to cook.
  • They contain Nitrates and Nitrite - They retain the red color of the meat. Nitrites control or reduce the toxic bacteria of the meat.

amount of Nitrates and Nitrites from the processed meat are strongly controlled by food authority officials. The key point in this is to read the label and buy from a reliable supplier

excessive intake of Red meat can increase to Bowel cancer according to studies. to reduce the risk of bowel cancer, we need to take more fiber with our red meat to balance and proportion our diet.

The best advice is, moderation is the key. There is nothing wrong with eating meat, But it should be balanced and proportioned so we can get the best optimal benefits of meat.
