Coin of the Day 9-10-18

One of the reasons I've really been enjoying this series on older foreign coins is that even if you're from the country where they were minted, you're not likely to see these coins on a regular basis. Many of the coins have been updated to newer versions, or in the case of Europe, most of the countries have switched to the Euro. This makes the coins more unique and special.

Today's coin is a 10 Centimes coin from France. It was minted in 1918 which is toward the end of the first World War. The coin is made of copper-nickel, according to Numista

The "R F" you see stands for French Republic. The coin is rotated to the left a little, but above the hole is supposed to be a hat. It looks more like the head of a turtle to me.

On this side we have the value and the year it was minted.

There were 30 million of these minted, so the value isn't great, but it's still likely to be at least $0.50.

Anyone have more of these? How about a different denomination?

First time am seeing or hearing about it in my life. Amazing how much our currencies have changed over the years .

I'm glad I got to introduce you to it! It was my first time seeing it that I could remember. It's fun to be able to highlight older coins that people may have forgotten about.

As always, it was nice to see you around!

I have only a few silver French coins and they are not as old as this.

This is one of the only ones I have. I'll have to go through my other coins to see if I have any older.

I'm really impressed at the number of coins you have from around the world. It can be difficult to get them in the US, so I imagine it's even more difficult in Brazil. Do you get them while you're visiting your daughter in Canada?

I have been collecting for forty years and everytime I traveled, I visited coin shops in several countries and increased my collections, even with common coins. The modern Canadian ones were bought when I was visiting my daughter in Canada.

I'd love it if I could get another 40 years of collecting. That's smart that you've just been collecting where you travel because then you don't have to pay higher premiums to get the coins from other "cointries." Ha ha.

Old coins are pretty interesting. I have a small box of random coins that came from an elderly auntie's house in Denmark... got it after she passed away in 1997. She wasn't really a "coin collector" but she saved any coins that "looked old" whenever the would travel... and she traveled at LOT, going all the way back to the 1930s. (she was born in 1904). I really should dig it out and see what's in there.

=^..^=

Yeah, some of the coins have many, many years of history. That's awesome that your aunt gave you a bunch of coins. It would be interesting to see what she had in her collection, especially since she traveled so extensively.

Thanks for stopping by!

I have a very nice old 5c from 1924 that is the same design as this one !!!

Right on! It's an interesting design and overall a nice coin. I'm glad you liked it!

Thanks for stopping by!

Another interesting coin @themanwithnoname! It still has a lot of detail on it for a coin that is 100 years old.

I think it's incredible when a coin is that old, but it can still be in such good condition that you can still see all the fine details of it.

ha! look at that foreign looking coin with the hole in it! hey sir noname did you ever tell me why those foreigners put those holes in their coins?

I believe that some countries put holes in the middle because it made it easier to keep track of them. You could put a string through them and wear them around your neck.

no way...I mean you could but that's not the real reason is it? lol.

From what I've read, yes actually. A number of the coins were designed to by put on a strong so you could wear them and not lose them. I guess that was before wallets and coin purses.

haha! that sounds retarded to me but hey, well I guess it depends where you wore them at, it seems like you would be advertising how much money you had.

it seems like you would be advertising how much money you had

Like this? ;)

Maybe they wear the coins under the shirt. I'm not really sure. I like to not advertise how much money I have, but that's just me. Maybe in some cultures, it was the thing to do, and maybe they had low crime. No clue, man! As a man once said, "I'm just a singer of simple songs" or something like that. :D

hahaha! hey look I'm almost to 400sp, the delegation goes away at the end of this month so I'm busting my butt to try and get to 500 on my own.

Yeah they probably had a totally different culture which we wouldn't understand.

hi, first time i have seen a coin with a hole; i am very new to coin collecting! and i love reading all these posts showing different coins, thank you for sharing i look forward to seeing more fab coins~think i have become a little obsessed lol have a fab day, respect

Always glad to have new collectors stopping in. I'm glad you liked this coin. I have showcased a few recently that have had holes in them, but most coins that I see don't have a hole.

If you're into coins and precious metals, you should check out other posts from the #steemsilvergold community or head over to @ssg-community to see what we're all up to.

Thanks for stopping in!

I have enjoyed seeing your older foriegn coins.I have a few that belonged to my Grandfather. I had hoped to share some of my coins by now, but life got in the way. It is still on my list of things to when I get the time.

I'm glad you've liked seeing them. I'd rather be showcasing silver or gold coins, but a lot of these have much more history.

Would like to see your coins sometime. Don't worry about life getting in the way. It happens to all of us. When you're ready, you're ready. In the meantime, don't beat yourself up. :)

another really cool coin with a hole in the middle. :)

Gotta mix it up, right? :)

hahaha yeah

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold

They are fairly common over in europe but i can imagine they are fairly rare in the USA. Not worth a great deal but they are fun to have as you can wear the coins on a piece of string

One of the great advantages that Europe has over the US is there are many different countries over there, so it's much easier to get "foreign" coins since so many countries are so close.
