the cleric (short story)

in #story4 years ago

He stood there, motionless. The hole that he made in the dead demon's skull had not even paid him any attention. The fight was seemingly over, and as the cleric just stood there his opponent, now in a semi-conscious state, let out a groan. The cleric mentally thanked God for leading his aim so perfectly, and then the demon would release one more groan before the cleric fired off his final dagger. The demon shut its mouth and its eyes and fell back. The cleric stayed there for a moment before turning around and going back into the pub for the rest of the celebrations. The celebrations that would allow his people to bask in the light of their new hero, The Cleric.

That was a week ago on the Isle of Tura. A place where every once in a while demons would pop up and try to kill as many people as possible for reasons unknown. The attacks were sudden and were always near impossible to defend against, but this week the people were ready for them. The clerics on Tura didn't know why they could heal them, but they did it well. So well in fact, that they were able to put up a defense against the demons before they would even pop up. The demons are always lead by a majin, which is a very powerful of a demon. The majin stands at about 9 feet tall with muscles that are 50x those of any normal human. They weigh about 1000 lbs altogether when they have formed their majin form. The most feared thing about the majin though was that they could not be killed. They were always weak and always knew that their end was near. This was why they constantly were on the move to blend in with society. If they showed their majin form, people would freak out and they would be killed in retaliation. But on Tura the majin never showed it. The majin were so enthralled with hearing about everyone's small lives, that they lived in the shadows and no one wanted to attack them. As time went on the cleric understood why his opponents would not attack. They were only fighting the demons because they were protecting the people of the village. So why would they want to kill the very souls they were defending? The cleric began to not be able to get rid of his fears.

Time went on for a few years and the cleric did more things like this. He would always always be met with the warmest of welcomes, great tours, and amazing hospitality he could ever ask for. He had killed the majin that were there with him many times over and he became quite skilled at his trade. Then one day he got a letter. It was a personal message from a random demon that was just passing by the village. It said that he had to go to a place called Saint's Tower in order for his next opponent to be killed. Now this would probably be a book to itself, but most of the clerics had not killed a majin. They had only killed a few demons here and there that were even lower than the majins. But this was apparently an offer that was out of this world. He had never gotten a quest like that before. This cleric was forced to think hard about it. Then he came up with a brilliant idea. He would go and kill the majin, but he would not kill the demons. This way it was a deal. He would get the chance to kill a majin, and he would become the greatest and most renowned cleric in the open arms of the people. He had to wait though, because the cleric who had acquired the quest was supposed to have been reliable, and if he returned with nothing then this would ruin all of the cleric's fame and the cleric would be chased down by everyone trying to get on the next quest.

So the cleric sat and waited for 3 years for all of the chaos to settle down. After that he got his new destination. This time it was a small vassal where he would flee to after he got his majin off his back. The cleric set out on his journey for the Tower. He had no idea what he was going to encounter from the Tower, but he had to settle the quest for his people.
