Canal View Cafe - A Tasteem Review

The Canal View Café is a place I have cycled past several times but never stopped for a bite.

@bingbabe brought it to my attention as it doesn’t exactly stand out unless you look for it.

IMG_7231.jpg

A café directly on the canal side is unusual and not the kind of place I would think is good for business unless the weather is good.

IMG_7230.jpg

Dog walkers, cyclists, and ramblers would be the target audience and that's if they even notice it.

IMG_7229.jpg

We stopped and ordered letting the owner know that we would be back in around 10 minutes to eat.

He didn’t ask for payment up front, as people in this part of the world can be trusting. Maybe I looked that way to him?

IMG_7235.jpg

We cycled up the canal for around another mile and returned just in time to be served.

The menu is not huge and so we didn’t take long to decide. I ordered Steak Pie, Chips and Veg at £5 and @bingbabe Chilli and Rice at £4.

There's a few places where you can go cycling while your food is being prepared. I do love something different.

IMG_7239.jpg

The food was presented to us piping hot and I had to spill the contents all over my plate before I could tuck in.

The pastry tops tend to keep the heat in and then burn your mouth if you attempt to eat what’s underneath.

IMG_7238.jpg

The Canal View Café is not exactly ‘Cordon Bleu’ but really, what do you expect for this price?

IMG_7240.jpg

@bingbabe’s meal was gone before I knew it, but that is generally the case when rice is put in front of her. She was nodding in approval.

My food was good value and filled a hole, but I have tasted better Steak pie at other places. The chips were adequate but eatable.

IMG_7237.jpg

We were not alone, and several other ‘diners’ were sitting at adjoining tables enjoying the sunshine, or in our case escaping it.

IMG_7242.jpg

The inside of The Canal View Café is larger than is portrays with numerous rooms and even more rooms upstairs. It was at this point that I realised it did have a roadside entry point, but I had never even noticed.

IMG_7244.jpg

The front entrance is dowdy looking and plain and likely the biggest reason I have overlooked it.

IMG_7248.jpg

I had to cross a very busy road that was housing temporary traffic lights in order to take this photograph of what looks like someone’s house!

It’s little wonder that I have driven past it countless times without noticing.

IMG_7246.jpg

I spoke to some locals sitting close to us about this café and they were all very positive about it.

The menu is very limited but I would visit the Canal View Café again probably ordering the ‘Teriyaki Chicken Thighs’ next visit.

IMG_7250.jpg

Speaking of the menu, I noticed the Steak Pie now had a cross through it. It seems I got the last one.

IMG_7243.jpg

Receipts don't come much plainer than this, but it did the job!

If I was to sum up The Canal View Café, I would describe it as ‘A good stop off point for Canal walkers/cyclists/hikers/ramblers for decent wholesome bargain food’.

IMG_7251.jpg

The seating is plain, the décor unattractive yet is holds some charm. If you visit, then get on the Canalside and just walk into through the shutter to order your food!

Seem like something I would definitely be down with. I prefer value over fancy any day. You make lots of contributions to Tasteem?

You make lots of contributions to Tasteem?

I do, I have around 5 more to write up.. it just takes time to do it all. My wife loves eating out so I try and take advantage of the situation to her annoyances sometimes.

Are you attending SF4?

I really enjoy reading your reviews. Thank you for always writing high-quality reviews for Tasteem. I have upvoted and bookmarked this review to show my appreciation.

Thank you @takosdiary, it is appreciated :) I only wish these library of reviews could be used by others in the future to determine great, average or even poor places to dine / or not too.

Is there any indication that it may happen from @tasteem?

looks like a really nice place. price for the pie seems absolutely fair.

I like how they wrote your 'name' on the bill.

Yes, we are just 'cyclist', it's better than some names I have been called in the past!

That place has a feeling of going back in time, trusting of people ordering and wondering off a handwritten receipt and an interesting locale, I think since you nabbed the last steak pie would have to try the cottage pie

Their stock levels don’t appear to be very high!

I did think that myself makes one wonder how much business they get each day

Seems like good value, but they need some veggie options :)

They do, it’s a very carnivorous menu.

Bargain and a nice canalside view. Love the relaxed approach. Those chips looked all right, a bit sparse, maybe, and the veg looks very nice.

It’s worth another go, close to home and good value. Not all the places we go to are posh 😁

Looks like a nice spot!

This seems like a really nice little place. Do you think they pretty much have the same menu everyday or do you think they do specials occasionally? I probably would have went with the garlic herb chicken. Either that or the sweet and sour chicken. I think it is crazy that the chili is just placed on a plate instead of in a bowl. If it were thicker maybe I could see it on a plate.

It struck me as a fixed menu kind of place but until I visit again can’t be sure. Chilli is always in a bowl in the US?

Unless it is on top of a hot dog or spaghetti...

Wow what an awesome place! Love places like this that blend in with the culture and don’t stand out like most restaurants do. 💯

Yes it’s a unique place all right, horrible to look at but serves decent food!

For that kind of money, I think it would be on my list to hit for sure!

What a cool review! When you say Canal here in the Philippines is a different story, you'll never be able to put up a shop near one, but it's a good thing that our government is trying to clean things up. I would love to visit a restaurant that's like that. Thanks for sharing sharing this with us and have a great day!
