The Grampians are a well known National Park in Victoria about 3 hours west of Melbourne. They are a range of rugged sandstone hills seeming to rise abruptly out of the surrounding predominantly flat landscape and form a unique and stunning natural feature that attracts many visitors throughout the year.
One of the jewels in the crown of the Grampians National Park is MacKenzie Falls which we enjoyed visiting on a recent camping trip to the area
The main waterfall at MacKenzie Falls
There is a steep walkway down to the base of the main falls from the visitors car park but it is only a short distance of about 300m but as you can see in the pictures it is well made and maintained. When you get to the base of the falls there are stepping stones to cross the creek and a large flat area where many people are enjoying the view and the cooling spray.

On the day that we visited the temperature hit 44°C so there were many people swimming to cool off!
From the falls there is a well made path heading to the Zumsteins picnic ground just over 3km down stream. We made the walk but it was extremely hot. There was a wind blowing so we took to soaking our clothes in the creek and then as we walked they would dry in the wind and keep us cool (well... sort of cool!)
making our clothes wet in the creek so that we would keep cool in the heat
The walk is well worth the effort as there are many more beautiful small waterfalls to be seen along the way and they are less crowded than the main attraction that can be accessed so easily from the visitor car park.

On this particular day we were luck enough to see a Lace Monitor or Lace Goanna but I was too slow to get a decent picture of it. We have also seen an Emu very close up near the main waterfall.
I highly recommend MacKenzie Falls, and the Grampians in general, as a place to visit if you are in Melbourne or the surrounding area.
Thanks for reading - have a great day!
Looks like I know where to go camping next!
Water looks clean and moving nicely.... Can you fish there?
Well worth the visit! There is some good camping and fishing close by. I don't think there is going to be much in the way of sizeable fish in the creek here though.
I've been to the Grampians so many times but for some reason I've never been to these falls. I like the climbs more I guess
The climbs are fantastic, we really enjoy them too! What's your favourites?
Great photographs and thank you for sharing your experience here with us. Australia is such a beautiful place. Happy Australia Day! 🎉
Hiya, just swinging by to let you know that this post made the Honorable mentions list in today's Travel Digest!
I haven't been to the Grampians yet. Would love to go to these Falls
There's a waterfall not too far from where I am that is about that popular. Your waterfall is much bigger and more impressive though XD Looks like a really nice place to visit, if I'm ever back in Melbourne might try to get over there :)
Love your graphic of the goat by the way :D
And I just went to my teamaustralia map to find out where that might be and realised your not on there. Add a comment to the post if you want to be added, or maybe you want to remain mysterious ;) The grampians in general are in my view the best place to visit in Victoria, the walk up to the pinnacle peak not far from these falls is awesome! thanks for the comment and read!

Hm I thought I had commented to say where I was, maybe I broke it XD (or entirely possible busy glitched out on commenting as it doesn't seem to like me having over 100 tabs open and that happens quite frequently).
Congratulations, Your Post Has Been Added To The Steemit Worldmap!

Want to have your post on the map too?
Thanks for this write up, for tagging team Australia AND for putting it on Steemit World MAP!
I'm currently planning a road trip in a camper from Adelaide to Melbourne over six days in the next month and I'm looking for National Parks and reserves with amenities blocks (toilets and showers) along the way. Could you give me any advice as to some of the best stops to make along the way? (showers are a must!)
Thanks for the write up - I'm just sad I didn't see this sooner so I could have given you an upvote worth some $SBD!
Take care,
Nick
Your welcome mate. I’m going to do a post about it but I reckon you are on your travels now so if you get a chance check out Melville caves... stayed there last week and really liked it. About an hour north west of Bendigo. But I just reread your message and realise there are no showers there...
Im sure its still worth checking out! We will jjst take a box of wet wipes for a 'bird bath'.
I have a feeling some of the most amazing places wont have amenities available so I'm coming to terms with using alternative cleaning methods and having to wait for a proper shower.
Don't we take 21st century sanitation for granted!?
Take care, my friend.
Nick
I subscribe to the view that the less showers you have whilst camping the more you enjoy the first one on your return to civilisation 😂
I concur. Hehe.
Tbh, as long as my face isn't greasy and grimy I'm usually pretty fine with it.
