Buongiorno Steemians!

I'm imagining sipping foamy cappuccino at one of the bars in Italy....mmm what an amazing treat!

Talking about coffee bars in Italy, in Malaysia we refer places to have a cup of our local coffee as coffee shops/kedai kopi (malay)/kopi tiam (chinese hokkien dialect). Even then, our coffee are prepared differently from the west. Malaysian coffees are made with liberica beans which is usually roasted in butter/margarine and sugar. Its generally dark and robust and brewed using a cloth filter to filter out the grounds, and coffee is usually taken with sugar, condensed(sweetened) milk or evaporated milk.

Like every country in the world, Malaysia has the its own unique yet challenging way of ordering a cuppa. Do take note that letters that come with the drink like 'C', 'O', 'kosong' are like codes that unlock secrets to how you like your drink and the list is pretty comprehensive

Here’s how to order a cup of local kopi;

Coffee – Kopi this is hot coffee, with sugar, and condensed milk; so it doesn't mean black coffee

Black coffee – Kopi O (the O is pronunced 'awe')

Coffee with evaporated milk – Kopi C ("C" in hainanese dialect means "fresh")

Iced coffee – Add ‘ping’ at the end ("ping" in mandarin means "ice")

Extra thick coffee – Add ‘kau’ at the end ("kau" in hokkien dialect means "thick")

Sugarless coffee – Add ‘kosong’ at the end ("kosong" in malay language means "empty")

Less sugar – kurang manis

Take away – bungkus or ta pao

It could also be best describe using the infographic below;

Therefore in Sabah or Malaysia, one can say almost all the dialects in a single order.

"Satu kopi C kau kosong ping" - One extra thick ice coffee with evaporated milk without sugar please!

Sort:

Sometime we have size of big and small too! haha.. mine order is always bit complicated: Kopi C kosong suam kecil.

That's something new and thank you for pointing that out. All this while I thought it comes with standard size.

Haven’t been to Sabah yet but in Penang, KL, Johor, you can choose the size too :)

Satu kopi C kau kau! tip!
Thank you!!!

Thanks for dropping by @elizacheng. Wah coffee shop get tip some more ahh..

You are most welcome... :D

very interesting indeed! I think I wiol probably need kopi C kao kosong.

That should boost me up since I did not have coffee for 5 weeks now haha 😁

I think so far Malaysia is the only unique country that can string multiple dialets into one sentence flawlessly

Deprived of coffee? Hopefully you're not on the CA program. By now, you must be feeling the kick of the cold turkey @littlenewthings. Only in Malaysia indeed...

Oh I actually have done 40 days no coffee challenge before so it can come naturally now with or without coffee.
However this time was due to my fever blister turned fungal infection horror show. I am still under medication application but it is getting better and I just broke fast today with 1/2 teaspoon of coffee with a bit of milo on a shot espresso glass.

Not only coffee, I was deprived from deep fried, spicy, solid food, fruits that requires plenty of chewing.

Fungal infection? Oh my...
That so unfortunate, @littlenewthings. I hope that's not the little new things that you are looking for? (my bad... Its a bad joke and cheesy. Its suddenly just came out but can't stand to joke and cheer you up!) I wish you are feeling better now. Think on the bright side there is no need for "Fats Be Gone" session for you as I am sure when you get over all this you will look fantastic!

haha. that's actually rather torturing for "fats be gone". The bad part of this regime is that you will be so much in pain that you do not have enough energy to actually exercise to build your muscles; hence it will end up muscles be gone faster than fats be gone ... nevertheless.

Great article.. I don’t drink coffee but my family have been in Hainanese coffee business for over 6 decades.. your detail and flow in this articles is amazing

I'm humbled by the feedback and thank you for visiting, @orangila. Its bizarre but I guess it happens... some people enjoyed the aroma of freshly brewed coffee but never drunk coffee. Now I'm wondering where is the location of the business..lol

It is located in Penang in the middle of the World Heritage Site... walking distance from Komtar

This post reminded me of when my one of my friend was ordering Iced Lemon Tea, she ordered ,'Iced Lemon Tea Panas'. Hahaha, Good post! Heading over for Kopi C Iced now

OMG, lol.... I did the same in mamak stall then 'Ane' got confused and repeat the order again with a grin. Its so embarssing...enjoy your Iced kopi C.

Been a coffee drinker for ages. These days I prefer plain black coffee to power up my day. Good job with this article. Keep it up!

Thanks for dropping by @karinzdailygrind!

@macchiata when come back and try out all these coffee 😉

Thanks for dropping by @aaronleang.

wow! I hadn’t noticed that we mixed so many languages and dialects in just 1 order! :)

We Malaysians always mixed them in our daily conversation - Macha, saya kereta double parking tolong ta bao order ni (now everything rojak, liao)

I just love coffee (I owned a coffee shop for a time), and how to order correctly is always of interest to me.

"Double tall latte, please" for me.

Thanks for a wonderful article.

Thanks for the kind words @bigtom13. Wow! double dose of goodness ;)

For some reason or another, when i order KOPI O without sugar, they look at me funny. Sometimes they totally ignore my 'without sugar' statement and give me the sweetest KOPI on earth. Well.. maybe sweetest in the galaxy. Haha...
