Deep questions. I think Philip Dick, in his novels and stories, just started to scratch the surface of this issue.

For now I mostly agree with Daniel Dennett: that Freedom Evolves, and with it consciousness and volition, from increasingly complex systems. We might be a long way from the kind of complexity that can support true AI, but then again, technology advances on a logarithmic scale, and exponential growth can be damn surprising.
