At least your telemarketers can speak understandable English.
We get a lot of Asian sounding callers, that are hard to understand what they are saying.
Or, "Yes, one moment caller, I will get him for you," park the phone and carry on doing what you were doing. Come back in five and they have gone.
Strangely, the word gets around and you will get a lot less calls.

Interesting. That putting the phone down one does sound effective. Recently, I've had some that when you answer say "Please hold" so I tell them "no" and hang up. Seriously, who starts a conversation with "Please Hold?"
At the moment there is a scam, an extremely Indian voice tells you that something is wrong with your computer, he is from IBM and can fix it over the phone, please start your computer so he can help.
My business partner, who has problems answering his mobile, and is only allowed to look at the screen here, got one of them, he managed to make the call last 15 minutes before asking for a free computer so this caller could fix it.
All calls cost, make it to expensive to call and they will stop.
