A question about something weird a therapist said

in #therapy7 months ago

Therapy clients and therapists what is your take on the following scenario? In a session where I was in crisis, I became clearly disregulated and distressed, in tears and struggling to speak, and the therapist says, "Do you want me to feel sorry for you?" I know my question might be vague. I am curious of others' general thoughts and impressions.

I would definitely ask your therapist about this, as well as share how you felt when he said those words.

If your therapist is generally good with you, then my guess would be that he was trying to ask you what you needed from him, and it came out super clunky and awkward, and it sounds, also hurtful.

If you’ve had other issues/red flags with this therapist, then this could be just another one in the series.

It does make a difference how he normally is with you and how you normally feel with him. If this is unusual for him, then it could have been an off day, he got distracted, some of his own stuff leaked out… and you should be able to sort it out by having a conversation about it and its impact on you.

If he’s like this all the time, and has not responded to previous efforts on your part to work things out… then you may have to approach this differently.

So yeah, I guess your first step is to see where this fits in… and initiate a conversation about it with him… and then see what happens.
