In today's post I would like to introduce you to an interesting Greek island. Nisyros, a small volcanic island located about 16 km south of Kos in the Aegean Sea. This is still largely untouched by mass tourism and can only be reached by ferry. From our Kos holiday resort you can transfer from Kos town and from Kardamena to Nisyros with a small ferry. There are also organized excursions by tour operators, but we recommend trying on your own. You arrive at the harbor Mandraki and from there we drove to the crater. You can rent a scooter, but also cheap to go by taxi. Since we had our scooter, we arrived there before the buses of the tour operator and could visit the crater all alone.
In the crater you have to be careful where you step, because the soil is sometimes brittle and sometimes very hot. This shows that the volcano is still active. Sulfur gas escapes from fumaroles and it smells of rotten eggs everywhere. And that smell soon drove us away.
We wanted to explore the island better and made our way to Emporio and Nikia. These are two villages on the old crater rim up to 400 m altitude. On the way you have a wonderful view of the crater and as you can see on the picture below the excursion buses arrived. And on the original image (link) you can also see the people on their descent into the crater.
In my next post I will show you some impressions of the still quite original villages Nikia and Emporio.
See you then.
All pictures taken by may own.
Rotten eggs smell of sulfur sits in your throat for some time, not pleasant.
Brave people living on the rim of volcanoes, even with a fascination of different places, not sure I would live that close.
Island sounds quiet and peaceful when you not in a tour group and going it alone.
Sounds like an interesting island.
Magical! An active volcano island * ___ * !!! The photos from the crater and of the craters are absolutely beautiful, @ikarus56 :D I love it!
Thank you so much @veryspider. Much appreciated.
Wow! You seem to end up on volcano islands all of the time my friend, I don't think too many people would stay in the villages?
Another great post of yours!
Blessings!
Haha. You are right @papilloncharity. I am fascinated by vulcanos. Thanks a lot, my friend.

Love how in-depth you show it. I feel like Im there
Lovely that you can get to such interesting places away from the main tuorist areas!
I love how the building are all white - makes it look so fresh and clean especially in contrast to the lovely blue sea!
Amazing that folks would live on the edge of volcanoes when they are still active! Not for me, but it sure would be interesting to visit it!
Thanks for sharing!
