It is the city where Saint Francis of Assisi was born, founder in 1208 of the Order of the Franciscans, and Saint Clare of Assisi, founder of the Order of the Poor Sisters of Saint Claire. Assisi, the Basilica of San Francisco and other Franciscan sites, have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
